<p>Ame<lb /><lb />3//2/6?<lb /><lb />AS<lb /><lb />MINUTES OF MARCH STAFF MEETING<lb />Psychology Department<lb />&amp; March 18, 1968<lb /><lb />The Psychology Department held its March meeting in EP 104 at 4 o'clock, March 18,<lb />1968,<lb /><lb />PRESENT; Martoccia, Fell, Dixon, Mitchell, Grossnickle, Stapleton, McLain, Rogers,<lb />Steinberg, Long, Cole, Higgins, Williams,<lb /><lb />In the absence of Dr. Prewett, Dr. Long chaired the meeting.<lb />Dr. James P, Rogers was elected to represent the Department on the Faculty Senate,<lb /><lb />A discussion was held concerning criteria for selecting the outstanding senior in<lb /><lb />the Department. A motion was made and passed unanimously that the Department proceed<lb />to elect the outstanding senior for this year and then to re-activate the Committee<lb />that had previously recommended nominees for this award, The following will serve<lb />on the committee; Stapleton, Grossnickle, Williams. They were instructed to set up<lb />the criteria to be used in the future for selecting the outstanding senior, Helen<lb />Cleveland was elected as the outstanding senior for this year.<lb /><lb />Dr. Martoccia stated that the students taking the comprehensive examination in the<lb /><lb />spring will be taking it under the old requirement--that is they will be examined<lb />in the 4 core areas,<lb /><lb />Dr. Rogers made the following suggestions pertaining to the comprehensive examination<lb /><lb />? L<lb /><lb />All comprehensives be given in the fall and spring quarters only.<lb /><lb />After a full discussion it was decided that this would work a<lb />hardship on the students and this suggestion was not adopted.<lb /><lb />2. The examination should consist of 2 examinations, each to last<lb />about 4 hours, with the first half to cover the core area and<lb />the second half relating to the individuals' speciality. Each<lb />section to be graded as a whole--not by individual questions.<lb />The examinations are to be given on 2 different days and the<lb />students must pass both halves--receiving either a passing or<lb />failing grade, not a letter grade on each part. Also, it was<lb />felt the core part should be more general in nature.<lb /><lb />After a lengthy discussion on this idea it was unanimously adopted.<lb /><lb />3. It was suggested that the student be advised that should he fail one<lb />or both halves of the examination he is entitled to one re-test only.<lb />However, should a faculty member feel that extenuating circumstances<lb />exist which he feels warrants the student being given the 2nd re-test<lb />he can recommend such to the entire staff and they will study the case<lb />and make recommendations on the student.<lb /><lb />This was agreeable with the staff.<lb /><lb />2 Dr. Rogers stated he would write a set of rules, circulate them among the staff<lb />for study and they would be considered at the next staff meeting,</p>

<lb />A short report was made on the students admitted to the graduate program,<lb /><lb />A discussion was held pertaining to the choice of textbook for Psychology 50,<lb />Motion was made and unanimously passed that the Psychology 50-100 Committee be<lb />reactivated to make a study and recommendations about the whole structure of<lb />Psychology 50, i.e., textbook, topics to be covered, tests, etc.<lb /><lb />A discussion was held reviewing the teaching fellowship program,<lb /><lb />Miss McLain stated there was no report at this time from the President's Advisory<lb />Council,<lb /><lb />Dr. Martoccia suggested that the Committee on Graduate Students' Program be re-<lb />activated. The following were on the old committee: Dr, Long and Dr. Martoccia;<lb />Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Prewett were appointed to replace Dr. Marshall and Dr. Graham.<lb />The Chairman is to be elected by the Committee,<lb /><lb />Miss McLain reported for the Committee on General College Curricula Requirements,<lb />The following recommendations were made:<lb /><lb />1, That a student must complete both Psychology 50 and 100 before being<lb />accepted as a psychology major.<lb /><lb />The thinking behind this recommendation was that the student needed more<lb />than Psychology 50 to determine whether psychology is for him, as he will<lb />have little chance to change his major after moving out of the general<lb />college. And, secondly, to complete the psychology major in two years<lb />after moving out of the general college, the student would need to have<lb />at least 100 completed,<lb /><lb />2. That courses in psychology above the 199 level be restricted and not open<lb />to people in the general college. The thinking here was to avoid a<lb />student's continuing in psychology, almost completing the major require-<lb />ments before declaring his major and getting advice from our department.<lb /><lb />Item I was unanimously passed,<lb />Item II was defeated by a vote of 10-2.<lb /><lb />Dr. Mitchell reported that the Graduate Council recently passed a motion that<lb />departments, in terms of using test scores for admission to the graduate programs,<lb />could use either the GRE or MAT or both. However, he stated that the thinking in<lb />the Psychology Department is that the GRE will continue to be used.<lb /><lb />A discussion was held as to whether the Department could require a student to earn<lb />no lower than a grade of '"'C'' in his major rather than that he just have a "C"<lb />average, No action taken on this.<lb /><lb />The meeting adjourned at 5:35,<lb /><lb />4<lb />/ ww<lb /><lb />i , F<lb />2 : if otf f 2<lb />oF ee rs fo + atthe d ef eis : i<lb />a .
