<lb />MINUTES OF JANUARY STAFF MEETING<lb />Psychology Department<lb />January 30, 1967<lb /><lb />The Psychology Department held its January meeting in EP 104 at 4 o'clock,<lb />January 30, 1967.<lb /><lb />PRESENT: Marshall, Martoccia, Mitchell, Dixon, Higgins, McLain, Grossnickle,<lb />Long, Burkheimer, Graham, Zimmerman, Sadlack.<lb /><lb />It was necessary for Dr. Prewett to attend a meeting in Raleigh at this time and<lb />Dr. Graham was asked to chair the meeting in his absence.<lb /><lb />Dr. Grossnickle submitted the report of the Psychology 50/100 Committee, Dr.<lb />Graham stated that the Committee felt this action was necessary in order to main-<lb />tain a common content for the Psychology 50 classes. Some complaints have been<lb />heard that too many students taking Psychology 100 after having taken Psychology<lb />50 felt that it simply was just taking Psychology 50 over again; and some of the<lb />professors felt that the students going into the upper level courses were not<lb />being prepared sufficiently for these courses. After a lengthy discussion motion<lb />was made and passed that the staff accept the topics for Psychology 50 and Psy-~<lb />chology 100 as recommended by the Committee. The topics to be covered are as<lb />follows:<lb /><lb />Psychology 50<lb /><lb />ae Introduction and history of psychology.<lb /><lb />b. Scientific method (methods in psychology).<lb /><lb />Ce Developmental.<lb /><lb />d. Intelligence.<lb /><lb />e. Motivation (from a non-physiological viewpoint).<lb />f. Learning--simple (conditions).<lb /><lb />ge lLearning--human (massed vs. distributed, etc.).<lb /><lb />h. Adjustment (including an introduction to Freud).<lb />i. Psychopathology.<lb /><lb />j. Social,<lb /><lb />Psychology 100<lb /><lb />a. Statistics and methodology,<lb /><lb />be. Tests and measurements.<lb /><lb />ce Emotion.<lb /><lb />Gs Percept ion.<lb /><lb />@e Sensation.<lb /><lb />f. Physiology.<lb /><lb />ge Personality theory.<lb /><lb />he Motivation (from a physiological viewpoint).<lb /><lb />i. lLearning--this is a key area in present day psychology<lb />and should be covered in both 50 and 100,<lb /><lb />j Thinking.<lb /><lb />The Committee was asked to study further the choice of texts and to make a re=<lb />commendation at a later staff meeting. In regard to the supervision of graduate<lb />teaching fellows, Dr. Graham asked the staff to submit any recommendations they<lb />might have to the Committee for study.</p>

<lb />2<lb /><lb />Dr. Grossnickle submitted a report for the Curriculum Committee requesting a new<lb />course-=Psychology 242--be adopted in order to broaden the Department's course<lb />offerings in the area of industrial and personnel psychology. Motion made and<lb />unanimously passed that this report be accepted.<lb /><lb />The subject of who was to be required to attend the graduate colloquia was dis-<lb />cussed at length. Dr. Grossnickle made the motion that attendance be voluntary<lb />but strongly recommended. Motion passed. Miss McLain suggested that the theses<lb />proposals be circulated prior to the colloquium in order for students and faculty<lb />to know something about what is going to be presented,<lb /><lb />It was announced that Joe Sturz' colloquium was scheduled to be held Thursday,<lb />February 2 at 4 o'clock in EP 104,<lb /><lb />Dr. Mitchell announced that he had plans to work out an outline as to what should<lb />be included in the theses proposals and he would present it to the staff at the<lb />next meeting. Dr. Graham asked if anyone was interested in this to please advise<lb />Dre Mitchell and they could collaborate on this outline,<lb /><lb />The question was brought up as to whether all students in the Psychology 50 classes<lb />should be required to serve as subjects for research projects. Dr. Mitchell<lb /><lb />stated that at the University of Colorado they had a policy that all students<lb /><lb />were expected to participate; at Pennsylvania State their policy is that the<lb />students are given an opportunity to participate and for all those who do they<lb />will receive extra credit in their course work. After a lengthy discussion<lb /><lb />motion was made that students in Psychology 50 may be requested to serve as sub-<lb />jects in experimental studies in the Department of Psychology with the under~<lb />standing that the experiments will follow ethical procedures. Motion was passed<lb />with two members dissenting.<lb /><lb />Dr. Mitchell brought before the staff the fact that some faculty members were<lb />being asked questions about the results of tests being given by the graduate<lb />students. It was the consensus of opinion that this was unethical and the<lb />following motion was made and unanimously passed: Results of diagnostic<lb />testing shall not be given out to anyone.<lb /><lb />Dr. Mitchell announced there was no report from the President's Advisory Council.<lb /><lb />The meeting adjourned at 5:30.<lb /><lb />3<lb />Yas ral P "<lb />7 fA 7 ae 's i- ZA " rs<lb />; ee 2 Ow vf ae the. tpa. ff b-Tuty .
