<lb />I.<lb /><lb />Il.<lb /><lb />ANNUAL REPORT OF PSYCYOLOGY DEPARTMENT<lb /><lb />Reporting Period: June 1, 1974 to May 31, 1975.<lb /><lb />Narrative:<lb /><lb />One of the major occurences in the Department this past year was approval by a<lb />visiting committee from the State Department of Public Instruction of the pro-<lb />gram in school psychology. This means that our graduates can now be certified<lb />as school psychologists in North Carolina. This past year the Department of<lb />Psychology increased by over 700, compared with last year, the number of total<lb />student enrollments. As an aid in handling some of this increased enrollment,<lb />the Department added one fulltime faculty member. The Departmental Code was<lb />completed this year, and has been submitted to the Faculty Senate. Of those<lb />students graduating, five psychology majors completed their work Magna Cum<lb />Laude. Two students were honored by the Phi Beta Kappa at East Carclina.<lb />Publications and presentations before professional groups continue at a high<lb />rate, and there are a number of on-going research projects presently being<lb />carried out by a large number of faculty members. This spring, the ECU<lb />Psychology Department, in conjunction with the North Carolina Psychological<lb /><lb />Association, sponsored a spring meeting on campus, with the major speaker being<lb /><lb />Dr. James V. McConnell, one of the outstanding psychologists in the nation.<lb /><lb />Dr. William F. Grossnickle was re-elected Southeastern Vice President of Psi<lb />Chi, the national honorary society in psychology, and represents all of the<lb />chapters in the southern and southeastern states. Dr. Thomas E. Long completed<lb />a year as President of the North Carolina Psychological Association, and did an<lb />outstanding job representing the NCPA and ECU. Departmental faculty have been<lb />active on both University and Departmental committees, and in community affairs.<lb />A Psychology Department retreat was held involving both faculty and students,<lb />and many helpful suggestions and ideas have been derived. It is hoped that the<lb />retreat will become an annual occurence. In spite of the large increase in en-<lb />rollment and the unavoidable lack of space and equipment, the Department has<lb />met the demands placed upon it, and we plan to continue to do so in the coning<lb />year. i<lb /><lb />Faculty<lb />1. a. It is anticipated that<lb /><lb />we shall be able to expand the number of students ip this program in<lb />an attempt to help meet the very large number of requests we receive<lb />for our graduates. A major project to be initiated in the Department<lb />this year will involve en attempt to revise the undergraduate progran<lb />in such a way as to provide BA graduates in psychology with marketable<lb />skills. There is a tremendous need for aides as well as professionals<lb />in the mental health field, and we feel that BA Degree people with the<lb />proper training can help to meet these needs. If and when more space<lb />becomes available, additional research is planned.</p>
