ANNUAL REPORT OF PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENTReporting Period: June 1, 1973 to May 31, 1974reNarrative:The Department of Psychology has had one major administrative change during thepast year involving the resignation of Dr. C. R. Prewett as Chairman, and theappointment of Dr. Charles C. Mitchell in his place. Dr. Prewett is continuingas a member of the Psychology Department staff. In line with past policy, therehas been increasing faculty involvement in administrative affairs, and there ispresently an Ad Hoc Committee which is working on the establishment of a Depart-mental Code. One new faculty position and one replacement were added in the failof 1973, and these two individuals will greatly strengthen our program in sclicolpsychology and the research area, with emphasis on computer usage. A computerterminal is to be set up within the Department, and this will eneble us to com-plete more research in a shorter period of time. This terminal will be, ofcourse, available to other schcols and departments. There have been a largenumber of faculty honors, with several in particular being noteworthy. Dr.William F. Grossnickle was elected Southeastern Vice President of Psi Cui, thenational honorary society in psychology, and was aiso elected secretary to theFaculty Assembly. Dr. Thomas E. Long is president-elect of the North CarolinaPsychological Association and was elected vicge~chairman of the North CarohinaState Board of Examiners of Practicing Psychologists. Four of the tap tengraduating seniors were psychelogy majors, with one, Thomas Durhan, being ionly student who has ever graduated with a perfect 4.0 average. Faculty membershave participated actively on Departmental and University committees, aad emhas been greater involvement during the past year in comnunity activities, |Student enrollments in the Department have shown an increase this year ever thepast year, in spite of a decline in overali student enrcilment in the University.The number of published articles and paper presentations by faculty of theDepartment has significantly increased this year -over previous years, and weplan additional activities in the areas of research and publication.
