<lb />ANNUAL REPORT OF PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT<lb /><lb />Reporting Period: June 1, 1973 to May 31, 1974<lb /><lb />re<lb /><lb />Narrative:<lb /><lb />The Department of Psychology has had one major administrative change during the<lb />past year involving the resignation of Dr. C. R. Prewett as Chairman, and the<lb />appointment of Dr. Charles C. Mitchell in his place. Dr. Prewett is continuing<lb />as a member of the Psychology Department staff. In line with past policy, there<lb />has been increasing faculty involvement in administrative affairs, and there is<lb />presently an Ad Hoc Committee which is working on the establishment of a Depart-<lb />mental Code. One new faculty position and one replacement were added in the fail<lb />of 1973, and these two individuals will greatly strengthen our program in sclicol<lb />psychology and the research area, with emphasis on computer usage. A computer<lb />terminal is to be set up within the Department, and this will eneble us to com-<lb />plete more research in a shorter period of time. This terminal will be, of<lb />course, available to other schcols and departments. There have been a large<lb />number of faculty honors, with several in particular being noteworthy. Dr.<lb />William F. Grossnickle was elected Southeastern Vice President of Psi Cui, the<lb />national honorary society in psychology, and was aiso elected secretary to the<lb />Faculty Assembly. Dr. Thomas E. Long is president-elect of the North Carolina<lb />Psychological Association and was elected vicge~chairman of the North Carohina<lb />State Board of Examiners of Practicing Psychologists. Four of the tap ten<lb />graduating seniors were psychelogy majors, with one, Thomas Durhan, being i<lb />only student who has ever graduated with a perfect 4.0 average. Faculty members<lb />have participated actively on Departmental and University committees, aad em<lb />has been greater involvement during the past year in comnunity activities, |<lb />Student enrollments in the Department have shown an increase this year ever the<lb />past year, in spite of a decline in overali student enrcilment in the University.<lb />The number of published articles and paper presentations by faculty of the<lb />Department has significantly increased this year -over previous years, and we<lb />plan additional activities in the areas of research and publication. Overall,<lb />the past year's work has been quite satisfactcry, and we intend to keep moving<lb />ahead. )<lb /><lb />Facuity<lb />1.
