<lb />B,<lb /><lb />Special lectures or academic programs sponsored by Department: None<lb /><lb />IV. Instruction<lb /><lb />A.<lb /><lb />Comment on what is being done to attain or maintain a strong, consistent<lb /><lb />demand for higher quality student performance.<lb /><lb />One of the professors is using newer humanistic approaches to stimulate<lb />discussion and participation in learning process by students.<lb /><lb />In one of the graduate courses the professor is requiring all the students<lb />to design a small, simple experiment, actually carry it out, and write a<lb />report about it. It is believed this will give students insight into<lb />doing research and to have some experience in professional writing.<lb /><lb />In other classes by one of the professors the student is asked to master<lb />the material presented in lectures and reading assignments; a study guide<lb />is given to each student to assist in this. During each quarter five<lb />hours are set aside as discussion periods. Material for discussion comes<lb />from Scientific American reprints and Psi Chi Library. The students are<lb />encouraged to choose a topic relevant to course work, study this topic on<lb />their own, discuss the topic with the professor and this is counted as an<lb />informal. examination.<lb /><lb />For Psychology 380G, Psychology of Exceptional Child, each student has<lb />been required to make a minimum of three field trips to institutions or<lb />agencies providing residential care, training or other services for<lb />exceptional individuals. Reports of observations and reactions follow<lb />each field trip.<lb /><lb />In Psychology 370G, Mental Hygiene in Schools, students have been re-<lb />quired to keep an "intellectual diary" of their readings, observations,<lb />and reactions to discussions, films, etc. This provides an opportunity<lb />for the professor to sample the ability of the student to see the inter-<lb />relationships among topics discussed, and his ability to see possibilities<lb />for meaningful application of principles of mental health.<lb /><lb />Report changes or modifications in: (1) teaching methods, (2) teaching<lb /><lb />patterns, (3) student advising procedures, (4) orientation of new faculty<lb /><lb />and teaching fellows, and (5) security measures for test materials.<lb /><lb />(1) Several instructors are conducting experiments with their classes<lb />using modified self-instructional and programmed methods.<lb /><lb />(2) None<lb /><lb />(3) None<lb /><lb />(4) A meeting was held at the beginning of the academic year and a<lb />professor instructed the teaching fellows as to their duties, re-<lb />sponsibilities, and other information necessary to the performance<lb />of their jobs.<lb /><lb />(5) A locked room is used for the care of the tests. Each professor has<lb />a space in this room which he can use to store his tests until needed.<lb />This room has two keys which are kept by the secretaries. The door<lb />has a special steel bolt type lock and it is kept locked at all times<lb />when the office is not occupied.</p>

<lb />V.<lb /><lb />VI.<lb /><lb />School or Departmental Development.<lb /><lb />A. List areas of specialty within the fields that are thought to be necessary<lb />or desirable to the present program or to the early expansion of the pro-<lb />gram in which the school or department (1) has no qualified faculty member,<lb />or (2) where the qualified faculty member within that field is within one<lb />year of retirement.<lb /><lb />B. Report activities of honor societies or work related to honor societies.<lb /><lb />Psi Chi is the only honorary fraternity pertaining to psychology and the<lb />Department continues to have an excellent chapter. A Psi Chi Library has<lb />been established and it is contributing a great deal to the academic devel-<lb />opment of the students. It is growing in number of volumes and the Depart-<lb />ment feels it is serving a very useful purpose, not only for psychology<lb />majors but students from other disciplines. It is manned by members of<lb /><lb />the fraternity and has the assistance of a student work serving a<lb />Librarian.<lb /><lb />Addenda<lb /><lb />Attach any pertinent material including faculty reprints, etc.<lb /><lb />Dr. James Higgins is doing research on the marine brachiopod Glottidia.<lb /><lb />Dr. Rosina Lao is spending 12 hours a week observing children at the<lb />Developmental Evaluation Clinic in order to get some actual experience in<lb />working with children so as to better her teaching ability in teaching<lb />psychology of children.<lb /><lb />Dr. R. S. Tacker conducted workshops in behavior modification for teachers<lb />through the Division of Continuing Education. Also developed a Behavior<lb />Record Chart for use in behavior modification procedures. (Copy attached.)<lb /><lb />Dr. Betty Jane Corwin acted as field supervisor for standardization program<lb />for Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (revised) for Psychological<lb />Corporation. Presented a paper: Comparison of test results of disadvantaged<lb />children at annual meeting of Southeastern Psychological Association.<lb /><lb />Dr. Charles H. Moore chaired a symposium and sponsored two graduate studentsT<lb />papers at annual meeting of Southeastern Psychological Association.<lb /><lb />Dr. R. S. Tacker is doing research on Precision Teaching of Educational<lb />Psychology. The procedures have been tested, revised, and evaluated three<lb />time. A strong working procedure for teaching this course has been developed.<lb />Data are being analyzed for possible publication. "<lb /><lb />Dr. R. S. Tacker has been involved as consultant to Greenville City Schools in<lb />the development of a behavior modification program imposed upon a pre-voca-<lb />tional exploratory curriculum for junior high students with learning handicaps.<lb />This program will serve as a laboratory for both research and training for a<lb />selected number of psychology students.<lb /><lb />Dr. Clinton R. Prewett has served as consultant for the Governor's Management<lb />Development program.<lb /><lb />Mrs. Hazel Stapleton was one of two evaluation consultants for an ESEA Title<lb />III Project in Environmental Science, P. S. Jones Junior High School<lb />Washington, North Carolina.</p>
