          <lb />E. Special lectures or academic programs sponsored by Department:<lb /><lb />IV.<lb /><lb />Monthly program were presented by Psi Chi. Professors from other schools<lb />and departments on campus were brought in as speakers; also, a number of<lb />the Psychology Department's faculty presented lectures at these meetings.<lb /><lb />Instruction<lb /><lb />A.<lb /><lb />Comment on Departmental teaching load for academic year.<lb /><lb />In the fall quarter 1970 69 classes were taught with an average of 40<lb />students per class. This includes all graduate classes as well as under~<lb />graduate classes. In the winter quarter 65 classes were taughf<lb /><lb />with an average enrollment of 31 students per class. In the spring<lb />quarter 69 classes were taught with an average class size of 42.<lb /><lb />Average Departmental teaching load for academic year.<lb /><lb />Faculty members averaged teaching between nine and ten hours per quarter.<lb /><lb />Comment on what is being done to attain or maintain a strong, consistent<lb /><lb />faculty demand for higher quality student performance.<lb /><lb />In Psychology 380G--Psychology of the Exceptional Child, the large classes<lb />are divided into sub-groups; individual assignments are given the students<lb />and the classes are taken on field trips for demonstration of need for<lb />concern in this area.<lb /><lb />One of the professors in teaching Psychology 305--Educational Psychology,<lb />attempted for the first time to use behavior modification techniques at<lb />the college level; i.e., behavioral cbjectives were established for each<lb />chapter of the textbook. The test items were directly related to the<lb />behavioral objectives handed out to each student.<lb /><lb />In Psychology 310-~Physiological Psychology, a student research group has<lb />been initiated. All members are involved in building research apparatus,<lb />doing surgery, testing subjects, doing histology, or analyzing data.<lb /><lb />The members meet once a week to critically discuss recent research re~<lb />lated to the work being done in the Psychology Department laboratory.<lb /><lb />Comment on methods used to safeguard security of test materials.<lb /><lb />The mimeograph room is still used as a locked vault-type room with each<lb />professor having an individual storage space for tests and other materials.<lb />This room is kept locked whenever the office is not occupied. The door<lb />has a special steel bolt lock with only two keys available which the<lb />Departmental secretaries have in their possession at all times.<lb /><lb />Comment on any innovations in teaching methods since last report.<lb /><lb />A program text was used in one section of Psychology 100--Advanced<lb />General with outstanding results--62% increase in A's and B's in the class.<lb /><lb />One professor uses a student evaluation at the end of each course he<lb />teaches so that changes in teaching methods might be made if indicated<lb />to be necessary.</p>

          <lb />Comment on methods used to assure that at least one essay examination<lb />or the nearest equivalent is given in each course.<lb /><lb />Staff members are reminded of the ruling of at least one essay examination.<lb /><lb />Comment on orientation of new faculty and teaching fellows.<lb /><lb />New faculty members are placed in committee positions so that they can<lb />learn quickly the operations of the Department. Teaching Fellows are<lb />counseled intensively at the beginning of each quarter in regard to their<lb />duties and responsibilities. Dr. Mitchell heads this work and monthly<lb />meetings are held with the Teaching Fellows.<lb /><lb />Comment on measures currently used to assure effective and helpful<lb />student advising.<lb /><lb />Counseling of our graduate students is excellent.
