Instruction<lb /><lb />A.<lb /><lb />Comment on Departmental teaching load for academic year.<lb /><lb />In the fall quarter 1969 66 classes were taught with an average of 40<lb />students per class. This includes all graduate classes as well as under-<lb />graduate classes. In the winter quarter 63 classes were taught, again<lb />with an average enrollment of 44 students per class. In the spring<lb /></p>
        <pb facs="00079323_0005" />
        <p>
          <lb />
          <lb />quarter 68 classes were taught with an average class size of 42.<lb /><lb />B. Average Departmental teaching load for academic year.<lb /><lb />~Faculty members averaged teaching between 11 and 12 hours per quarter.<lb /><lb />We need smaller classes in physiological psychology and in experimental<lb />psychology. We can continue to carry large loads in Psychology 50,<lb />Psychology 100, Psychology 240, and Psychology 305 without serious trouble<lb />with the quality of teaching.<lb /><lb />C. Comment on what is being done to attain or maintain a strong, consistent<lb />faculty demand for higher quality student performance.<lb /><lb />The Psychology Department ranks about in the middle as far as the grade<lb />distribution pattern at East Carolina is concerned. We have managed to main-<lb />tain the quality of student performance rather well by demanding that certain<lb />of our classes screen out the weaker student. For example, statistics,<lb />experimental psychology, and physiological psychology at least keep the<lb />illiterate from graduating. Our best students compare favorably with graduates<lb />from outstanding universities in the country.<lb /><lb />D. Comment on methods used to safeguard security of test materials.<lb /><lb />The mimeograph room is still used as a locked vault-type room with each<lb />professor having an individual storage space for tests and other materials.<lb />This room is kept locked whenever the office is not occupied. The door has<lb /><lb />a special steel bolt lock with only two keys available which the Departmental<lb />secretaries have in their possession at all times.<lb /><lb />E. Comment on any innovations in teaching methods since last report.<lb /><lb />Innovations in experimental psychology and in physiological psychology are<lb />continued to be tried each quarter. Team teaching was tried for Psychology<lb />305 with very excellent comments from the students.<lb /><lb />F. Comment on methods used to assure that at least one essay examination or the<lb />nearest equivalent is given in each course.<lb /><lb />Staff members are reminded of the ruling of at least one essay examination.<lb />Several staff members prefer essay exams but it is a problem with the huge<lb />sections of some of the courses.<lb /><lb />G. Comment on orientation of new faculty and teaching fellows.<lb /><lb />New faculty members are immediately placed in committee positions to that<lb />they can learn quickly the operations of the Department. Teaching Fellows<lb />are counseled intensively at the beginning of the quarter in regard to their<lb />work. Dr. Mitchell heads this work and monthly meetings are held with the<lb />Teaching Fellows.<lb /><lb />H. Comment on measures currently used to assure effective and helpful student<lb />advising.<lb /><lb />Counseling of our graduate students, we think, is excellent. Upper division<lb />undergraduate students are handled well because the staff members have very<lb />strong feelings for these students.</p>

        <p>
          <lb />
          <lb />V. School or Departmental Development<lb /><lb />A. List areas of specialty within the fields that are thought to be necessary<lb />or desirable to the present program or to the early expansion of the pro-<lb />gram in which the Department (1) has no qualified faculty members, or<lb />(2) where the qualified faculty member within that field is within two<lb />years of retirement.<lb /><lb />Programs which must be implemented with a substantial thrust include the<lb />school psychologists degree, which will be a 2-year Master's program and<lb />the Master's in industrial psychology. We are presently preparing an<lb />emphasis in behavioral modification for the Master's program.<lb /><lb />A psychological services center is still badly needed at the University and<lb />by the community. This would be a necessity if we are to ever offer a<lb />doctoral program in clinical psychology at East Carolina University.<lb /><lb />B. List national honor society or societies with which Department is affiliated,<lb />noting new affiliations since last report.<lb /><lb />Psi Chi is the only honorary fraternity pertaining to psychology and the<lb />Department continues to have an excellent chapter.<lb /><lb />C. If Department is not now affiliated with a national honor society, list<lb />steps being taken to gain affiliation.<lb /><lb />Already affiliated.<lb /><lb />D. List any honors or awards given to ~the Department since last report: None<lb /><lb />E. List all grants and subsidies to the Department or to faculty members,<lb />including the following information for each grant or subsidy: None<lb /><lb />F.
