T. Martoccia were conducted during<lb />the fall quarter with weekly meetings centered around<lb />basic topics in psychology.<lb /><lb />Seminars on mental test theories were held by several<lb />staff members,<lb /><lb />Instruction<lb /><lb />A.<lb /><lb />Be<lb /><lb />Ce<lb /><lb />Comment on School or Departmental teaching load for academic year.<lb /><lb />The Departmental teaching load is very heavy. This is known by<lb />all persons in the Administration and in the Department. We are<lb />particularly concerned with the quality of instruction in our<lb />beginning psychology course. Additional facilities and staff<lb />members are needed if we are to maintain the somewhat general<lb />excellence of years past.<lb /><lb />Average School or Departmental teaching load for academic year.<lb /><lb />Class size throughout the past year was in excess of 40 students.<lb />Average faculty load was between 12 and 13 quarter hours.<lb /><lb />Comment_on what is being done to attain or maintain a strong,<lb />consistent faculty demand for higher quality student performance.<lb /><lb />We are not as sure of our safeguards as in times paste Every<lb />effort is being exerted to see that the teaching fellows do<lb />perform in a uniformly strong way. In all other areas we feel<lb />that our students have done well and have been taught in a manner<lb />consistent with our academic intentions; however, this remains<lb /><lb />a persistent problem. We know that we can maintain the integrity<lb />of our graduate program because of check points built into the<lb />program at various places. The undergraduate program remains a<lb />problem for uS.</p>

<lb />De<lb /><lb />Ee<lb /><lb />Fe<lb /><lb />Ge<lb /><lb />Comment _on methods used to safeguard security of test materials.<lb /><lb />The mimeograph room has been converted into a locked vault -type<lb />room with each professor having an individual storage space for<lb />tests and other materials, This room adjoing the Departmental<lb />Office and is kept locked whenever the office is not occupied.<lb />The door has a special steel bolt lock, making it impossible for<lb />it to be pried opens Only two keys are available for this room<lb />and the Departmental secretaries have them in their possession<lb />at all times,<lb /><lb />Comment on any innovations in teaching methods since last report.<lb /><lb />We are trying to move certain of our courses toward a research<lb />participation model, Space limitations hinder us here but very<lb />admirable progress has been made in experimental psychology, in<lb />physiological psychology, and in problems (we use this as our<lb />honors program) in psychology.<lb /><lb />Comment on methods used to assure that at least one essay<lb />examination or the nearest equivalent is given in each course.<lb /><lb />Faculty members normally require essay examinations in each course.<lb /><lb />Comment on orientation of new faculty and teaching fellows.<lb /><lb />Several meetings are held with faculty members and teaching fellows<lb />in which syllabi are discussed and objectives of the courses are re=<lb />examined, This is a continuous program which goes on throughout the<lb />Feare<lb /><lb />Vs School of Departmental Development.<lb /><lb />Ae<lb /><lb />List areas of specialty within the fields that are thought to be<lb />necessary or desirable to the present program or to the early<lb />expansion of the program in which the School or Department (1) has<lb />no qualified faculty member, or (2) where the qualified faculty<lb />member within that field is within two years of retirement:<lb /><lb />The Psychology Department is now ready to substantially expand and<lb />offer new programs provided both facilities and staff are made<lb />available. We have a school psychologist program on the books but<lb />we have not permitted it to gather any momentum because our present<lb />facilities are sorely taxed to manage existing programs. I believe,<lb />however, that very strong pressure will be brought to bear for us<lb /><lb />to start this program, at least in a moderate manner,<lb /><lb />Three additional staff members are needed for the general area of<lb />school learning and educational psychology,<lb /><lb />There are signs from state, regional, and local levels that our<lb />clinical program will require additional facilities and staff,<lb />The State Department of Mental Health is very concerned that more</p>

<p>Be<lb /><lb />Ce<lb /><lb />Da<lb /><lb />F,<lb /><lb />5<lb /><lb />clinical psychologists be made available. Depending upon the scope<lb />of our increased involvement from 3 to 8 staff members would be re-<lb />quired in this area.<lb /><lb />The undergraduate program needs several additional staff members and<lb />more facilities for the courses requiring laboratory work. I would<lb />suggest 5 new staff members here.<lb /><lb />We must decide at the University level what emphases we are going to<lb />make in psychology. If we desire to produce good research with a<lb />graduate program based on about 50 students we could get along with<lb /><lb />a moderate expansion in facilities and staff. If we decide to respond<lb />to a great societal need in the health and behavioral sciences fields<lb />we will of necessity nea@la new building and a greatly augmented staff,<lb />L have indicated previously that I think substantial funding could be<lb />obtained from other sources if we took this move, Dr. Hargrove and<lb />Dre Osberg share this feeling.<lb /><lb />If we stay as we are I should think that a minimum of a net gain of<lb />5 staff members for next year is clearly indicated.<lb /><lb />List national honor society or societies with which School or<lb />Department is affiliated, noting new affiliations since last report:<lb /><lb />Psi Chi<lb /><lb />If School or Department is not now affiliated with a national honor<lb />society, list steps being taken to gain affiliation.<lb /><lb />List any honors or awards given to the School or Department since<lb />last report.<lb /><lb />Outstanding performance of students working on doctoral programs at<lb />other institutions, Continued recognition of the Master's program<lb />in clinical psychology which is being used as a model in various<lb />parts of the country.<lb /><lb />List all grants and subsidies to the School or Department or to faculty<lb />members, including the following information for each grant or subsidy:<lb /><lb />North Carolina Medical Care Commissilonecsesvcesecececccsccece 6 5000<lb />Mental Health Center of Western North Carolinadssscccosecseses 1,800<lb />New River Mental Health Contersieccicscscebhossboarcocecesesess 1,800<lb />Child Guidance Clinic of Forsyth Countyecscsscssesccccevessese 15500<lb /><lb />List proposals made during reporting period and note current disposition:<lb /><lb />1.
