<p>Se<lb /><lb />CAROLINA<lb /><lb />UNIVERSITY<lb /><lb />DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY<lb /><lb />UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM<lb /><lb />sychology is defined as the scientific study of be-<lb />havior. It encompasses such diverse fields as<lb />developmental, social, human factors, organiza-<lb />tional, personality, and physiological psychology.<lb />The application of psychology in the treatment of<lb />emotional disorders is investigated in a number of<lb />undergraduate courses but training in the treatment<lb />methods is typically restricted to graduate programs.<lb /><lb />The undergraduate course of study at East Carolina<lb />gives the students an opportunity to sample from all<lb />areas of psychology and involves learning about be-<lb />havior"how people and animals behave in different<lb />situations"and about the methods used by psy-<lb />chologists to obtain that knowledge.<lb /><lb />Our curriculum, taught by thirty full-time faculty,<lb />rovides a firm foundation for those who either elect<lb />to seek employment after graduating with a B.A.<lb />degree or for those who choose to pursue a graduate<lb />degree in psychology.<lb /><lb />CAREERS<lb /><lb />A student who graduates from East Carolina Uni-<lb />versity with a B.A. in psychology can expect to find<lb />employment as a psychological assistant in a mental<lb />health clinic or other social service organization; as<lb />a substance abuse counselor; or in business without<lb />going on for graduate study in psychology. The<lb />degree also can be used to prepare students who<lb />lan to go on for further study in other fields such as<lb />medicine or law.<lb /><lb />Since the employment opportunities for students<lb />with only a bachelorTs degree are limited because of<lb />rofessional requirements, almost all professional<lb />sychologists (psychotherapists or those who wish<lb />to teach in a university setting) have graduate<lb />training at either the masterTs or doctoral level.<lb /><lb />THE UNIVERSITY<lb /><lb />East Carolina University, a comprehensive institu-<lb />tion of higher learning, is a constituent member of<lb />the University of North Carolina system, and the<lb />third largest university in North Carolina. Campus<lb />enrollment is about 16,000, with approximately<lb />3,000 graduate students.<lb /><lb />The University is keeping pace with the current<lb />emphasis on electronic information processing by<lb />making it possible for every student to obtain<lb />experience in computer usage. Computer labs, open<lb />to undergraduates, are situated at convenient points<lb />throughout the campus. One of these labs is located<lb />in the Department of Psychology.<lb /><lb />East Carolina University is located in Greenville<lb />(population about 50,000) on the coastal plain of<lb />eastern North Carolina. Approximately two hours<lb />from Raleigh (the capital of North Carolina) and<lb />Morehead City (a popular ocean-front area), Green-<lb />ville is a cultural, economic, educational, and medi-<lb />cal center.<lb /><lb />For More INFORMATION<lb /><lb />For more information about the program, contact:<lb />Chair<lb /><lb />Department of Psychology<lb /><lb />115 Rawl Building<lb /><lb />East Carolina University<lb /><lb />Greenville, NC 27858-4353<lb /><lb />(919) 757-6634<lb /><lb />East Carolina University is committed to equality of educational oppor-<lb />tunity and does not discriminate against applicants, students, or employ-<lb />ees based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, or handicap.<lb />Moreover, East Carolina University is open to people of all races and<lb />actively seeks to promote racial integration by recruiting and enrolling a<lb />larger number of black students.
