<lb />Senator Sam J. Ervin, Jr. ~S=$555 has informed<lb /><lb />Dr. Steve Tacker of the East Carolina University Psychology<lb />Department of approval by the National Institute of<lb />Mental Health of a research grant in the amount of $4,919.<lb />The purpose of the grant is to study basic processes<lb />underlying frustration and the effects of frustration on<lb />learning. In explaining some of the specific problems<lb />to be investigated, Dr. Tacker said," We have all<lb />experienced frustration at one time or another, and we<lb />have usually been able to pinpoint the immediate cause of<lb />the feeling of frustration. We also know many of the<lb />things we do when frustrated. As an example, if you<lb />ut a coin in a vending machine and nothing happens,<lb />that might be a minor frustrating event. However, an<lb />outlet for removing this frustration is available so<lb />no strong feeling of frustration is aroused. But, now,<lb />ifT you push the coin return lever and still nothing<lb />happens, what do you do? Most people @et push the<lb />lever harder. Trying harder may be one result of<lb />frustration. We are interestedTin why people try harder<lb />when frustrated. Have they learned to try harder or is<lb />it a tendency that they are born with? And why do some<lb />eople try harder than others, and at what point do they<lb />)<lb />stop trying harder and kick the machine?<lb /><lb />f<lb />"Since ethical problems might arise in studying<lb /><lb />these processes in humans, we work with simpler situations</p>

We want to know how<lb />reiuce<lb />to preeedtre it, how to control it, and how to eliminate<lb /><lb />~ V<lb />¢ t Keasmener<lb />Dr. Tacker, an Associate Professor of Psychology,<lb /><lb />joined the East Carolina University faculty in June of<lb /><lb />a)<lb /><lb />e ark nls Ps ~ " . a ae f? im ay ra] - we mt ane = TT. 3 nune, 4 .<lb />last year.after teaching for four years at the Universit<lb /><lb />{<lb /><lb />of South Dakota, He and his wife are natives of<lb /><lb />west Tennessee</p>
