<p>E A -S 1<lb /><lb />CAROLINA<lb /><lb />UNIVERSITY<lb />12 AERO,<lb /><lb />MASTER OF ARTS IN PSYCHOLOGY<lb /><lb />CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY<lb /><lb />The program in clinical psychology is a curriculum empha-<lb />sizing assessment and intervention skills. Competencies in<lb />interviewing techniques, assessment skills, psychotherapy,<lb />and behavioral interventions receive focus through theoreti-<lb />cal and practicum courses and the six-month supervised<lb />clinical internship. The required thesis gives a clinically<lb />related research experience leading to appreciation and<lb />utilization of the literature in later practices as well as<lb />additional research in many cases. Students interested in<lb />teaching can gain experience through teaching assistant-<lb />ships. Graduates of the program are eligible to apply for<lb />licensure as a Psychological Associate in North Carolina.<lb />Once licensed, graduates are employable in a variety of<lb />settings, including mental health centers, hospitals, commu-<lb />nity colleges, and private practice.<lb /><lb />GENERAL PSYCHOLOGY<lb /><lb />The program in General Psychology has three concentra-<lb />tions: Industrial/Organizational (I/O), Mental Retardation/<lb />Developmental Disabilities (MR/DD), and Academic/Ex-<lb />erimental (A/E). The I/O and MR/DD concentrations<lb />both adopt the scientist/practitioner model, building skill<lb />courses on a solid base of general psychology. Both<lb />concentrations also require an internship. The A/E concen-<lb />tration can be tailored to individual interests, especially in<lb />the areas of physiological, social, or experimental, and is<lb />intended to provide a solid background, emphasizing<lb />research, leading to acceptance into a Ph.D. granting<lb />institution. In all three concentrations, most students also<lb />gain experience as teaching and/or research assistants.<lb />Most courses are offered at night on a three-year, rotated<lb />schedule so that it is possible to earn a degree on a part-<lb />time basis.<lb /><lb />SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY<lb /><lb />The program goal is to develop Level II school psychology<lb />ractitioners who apply psychological knowledge and tech-<lb />niques to educational and administrative problems in<lb />schools. The functions include school consultation,<lb />lanning and implementing intervention strategies, and<lb />individual psychological assessment. Research capabilities<lb />are stressed at both the applied and basic level. Internships<lb />and practicums provide students with a wide array of<lb />experiences with children of different ages and in different<lb />settings.<lb /><lb />School Psychology training is provided at two levels: the<lb />Master's Program and the Certificate of Advanced Studies<lb />rogram (CAS). The CAS program extends students<lb />beyond the basic core and prepares them for both consulta-<lb />tive and supervisory roles. Both are NCATE approved and<lb />meet the State of North Carolina Certificate requirements.<lb />Upon completion of the program, students receive North<lb />Carolina certification as a Level II School Psychologist and<lb />are eligible to become nationally credentialed as a Nation-<lb />ally Certified School Psychologist and licensed Psychologi-<lb />cal Associate in North Carolina.<lb /><lb />FINANCIAL AID<lb /><lb />Almost all of the psychology graduate students receive<lb />some form of financial aid. Most teach a section or two of<lb />the introductory course, under the supervision of a senior<lb />faculty member. Others serve as research assistants or as<lb />assistants to program directors. Both teaching and research<lb />are considered important parts of graduate training.<lb />Stipends range from $800 to $1,600 per semester.<lb /><lb />EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY<lb /><lb />East Carolina University, a comprehensive institution of<lb />higher learning, is a constituent member of the University<lb />of North Carolina system and is the third largest university<lb />in North Carolina. Campus enrollment is over 16,000, with<lb />about 3,000 graduate students. The University includes<lb />nine professional schools, a College of Arts and Sciences, a<lb />Graduate School, and a School of Medicine.<lb /><lb />Founded in 1907, the University is located in Greenville, a<lb />rogressive city of about 50,000 that serves as the cultural,<lb />economic, educational, and medical center of eastern North<lb />Carolina's coastal plain. East Carolina is within a two hour<lb />drive of both the state capital, Raleigh, and Atlantic coast<lb />beaches.<lb /><lb />APPLICATIONS<lb /><lb />Applications for graduate admission can be obtained from<lb />the Graduate School, 215 Brewster, East Carolina Univer-<lb />sity, Greenville, NC 27858-4353. Inquiries about particular<lb />sychology programs should be directed to Chairperson,<lb />Department of Psychology, 115 Rawl, East Carolina Uni-<lb />versity, Greenville, NC 27858-4353.</p>
