        <p>Overview<lb /><lb />The industrial / organizational concentration in the general<lb />graduate program trains students to apply scientific solu-<lb />tions to the workplace. I/O is a 36 semester-hour program<lb />that adopts the scientist-practitioner model in which stu-<lb />dents are prepared as psychologists first and specialists<lb />second.<lb /><lb />An essential part of the program is an internship, which<lb />rovides students with an opportunity to apply skills<lb />learned through course work and to acquire new skills in<lb />an organizational setting. The internship may require stu-<lb />dents to relocate.<lb /><lb />The department has two full-time I/O psychologists and<lb />two adjunct I/O psychologists. Three additional faculty<lb />members are also actively involved in the program. The<lb />I/O concentration is one of three within the general<lb />sychology program, the other two being mental retarda-<lb />tion/developmental disabilities and academic/<lb />experimental (A/E). The A/E concentration is designed to<lb />rovide a strong research background leading to accep-<lb />tance into a PhD program.<lb /><lb />Employment Opportunities<lb /><lb />Employment opportunities are varied and include both<lb />ublic and private sector jobs in areas such as personnel<lb />research, wage and salary administration, human resource<lb />development, statistics, personnel management, job analy-<lb />sis, selection and placement, training and development,<lb />organizational development, performance management,<lb />QWL, and entry-level management. Further education at<lb />the doctoral level is also an option.<lb /><lb />Most positions for masterTs-level psychologists in organi-<lb />zations do not require licensure. The skills required to be a<lb />successful I/O psychologist include intellectual ability,<lb />good oral and written communication skills, high career<lb />motivation, problem-solving skills, and a high level of in-<lb />terpersonal skills.<lb /><lb />Course Work<lb />The 36 semester-hour program is as follows:<lb /><lb />SYC<lb /><lb />5327 Methods in Human Measurement<lb />(Psychometrics) (3) ~<lb /><lb />5343 Psychology of Organizational Behavior (3)<lb /><lb />6420 Issues in Personnel Selection (3)<lb /><lb />6421 Social Psychology (3)<lb /><lb />6426 Motivation (3)<lb /><lb />6427 Advanced Principles of Learning (3)<lb /><lb />6430 Statistics and Research Design (3)<lb /><lb />6970 Internship (4)<lb /><lb />6995 Thesis (3)<lb /><lb />6996 Thesis (3)<lb /><lb />Electives (5)<lb /><lb />Additional work should be selected from electives in statis-<lb />tics, selected topics in I/O, ethical issues in I/O, group dy-<lb />namics, physiological psychology, sensation/perception, or<lb />related courses in other departments.<lb /><lb />Internship<lb /><lb />Internship placements generally occur during the summer<lb />following the first year of course work. An internship is an<lb />opportunity to do professional work under the supervision<lb />of another professional. As an intern, the student will be<lb />able to acquire new skills and apply concepts and tech-<lb />niques learned in course work. As an intern, the student will<lb />be supervised either by a PhD psychologist employed by<lb />the organization or by an ECU faculty member. Normally,<lb />the intern is placed on the organizationTs payroll. Several<lb />students have continued employment on their projects on a<lb />art-time basis after completing the internship. More than<lb />50 percent of our interns have obtained their thesis project<lb />and data during the internship. Relocation is sometimes<lb />required for the summer internship.<lb /><lb />Thesis<lb /><lb />The masterTs thesis is a professional research paper and an<lb />example of the student's research skills and ability to write<lb />an organized research report. The student will defend the<lb />completed thesis at an oral examination conducted by the<lb />thesis committee.<lb /><lb />Other Requirements<lb /><lb />A comprehensive examination covering the core course ar-<lb />eas and the I/O specialty is required. This examination is<lb />normally taken in the second year.<lb /><lb />A research skill requirement of not less than 3 semester<lb />hours from certain areas determined by the department or<lb />from a foreign language must be met. Additional work in<lb />statistics or computer science is recommended. These credit<lb />hours will not count toward the 36 semester hours required<lb />for the masterTs degree.<lb /><lb />Application and Admission<lb /><lb />Admission to the general psychology program is contingent<lb />upon meeting all requirements of the ECU Graduate School<lb />and being recommended by the graduate admissions com-<lb />mittee of the Department of Psychology. A completed appli-<lb />cation will include the Department of Psychology basic in-<lb />formation sheet; GRE verbal, quantitative, and advanced<lb />test scores; complete college transcripts; and a minimum of<lb />two letters of recommendation (at least one from a psy-<lb />chologist). Interviews are occasionally requested:<lb /><lb />A combination of GRE scores, grade point average, and ref-<lb />erences is used in making recommendations for admission.</p>

        <p>Applicants should score above the fiftieth percentile on the<lb />GRE and have above a 3.0 GPA, both overall and in their<lb />major.<lb /><lb />The department requires that all graduate students have a<lb />common core of undergraduate psychology courses in psy-<lb />chological statistics, experimental psychology, learning,<lb />ersonality, physiological psychology, and tests and mea-<lb />surements. Applicants may be admitted with deficiencies,<lb />but these deficiences must be met by appropriate under-<lb />graduate course work. These courses will not count toward<lb />the masterTs degree. Experience in word processing and/or<lb />general computer skills is also highly recommended.<lb /><lb />The admissions screening procedure begins March 15. All<lb />application materials should be submitted prior to that<lb />date. Final decisions generally are sent out in April. The<lb />general psychology program does not have a deadline for<lb />application, but spaces may be limited.<lb /><lb />For course sequencing, it is recommended that students<lb />begin graduate work in the fall semester. Admission for<lb />entrance at other times should be discussed with the pro-<lb />gram chair.<lb /><lb />Financial Support<lb />In addition to the paid internship, research assistantships<lb /><lb />are generally available for applicants. A letter accompany-<lb />ing the application materials indicating the desire and basis<lb />for needing financial assistance is considered an application<lb />for an assistantship.<lb /><lb />The majority of our full-time students have been research<lb />assistants for at least part of their time here.
