<p>Overview<lb /><lb />The A/E concentration in the general program is<lb />designed for those students who wish to pursue further<lb />study at the PhD level, work as a research psychologist,<lb />or teach psychology in a junior college. The A/E<lb />concentration is research oriented and is designed to give<lb />students maximum flexibility in designing a course of<lb />study.<lb /><lb />In this 36 semester-hour program, there are 18 semester<lb />hours of required courses, including 6 semester hours of<lb />thesis work. The remaining 18 semester hours may be<lb />taken as electives chosen to meet the student's area of<lb />interest.<lb /><lb />Six faculty members teach the required courses, while<lb />another ten to fifteen teach electives or participate in<lb />thesis supervision. The A/E concentration is one of three<lb />within the general program, the other two being mental<lb />retardation/ developmental disabilities and industrial /<lb />organizational.<lb /><lb />Course Work<lb /><lb />The required courses and semester credit hours are as<lb />follows:<lb /><lb />SYC<lb /><lb />6412 Advanced Physiological Psychology (3)<lb /><lb />6421 Social Psychology (3)<lb /><lb />6427 Advanced Principles of Learning (3)<lb />Statistics and Research Design (3)<lb />Thesis (3)<lb />Thesis (3)<lb /><lb />It is strongly recommended that students take PSYC<lb />6431, Design and Analysis, and a computer science<lb />course.<lb /><lb />Some of the available electives within the department<lb />include sensation and perception, laboratory methods,<lb />behavorial pharmacology, psychology of thinking,<lb />gerontology, developmental psychology, group<lb />dynamics, and design and analysis. Students with<lb />interests requiring course work in otherTdepartments are<lb />ermitted to take up to 9 semester hours outside of<lb /><lb />sychology.<lb /><lb />Thesis<lb /><lb />A thesis is a required component of the academic/<lb />experimental concentration. Students will exhibit their<lb />research skills and and writing ability by preparing a<lb />rofessional research paper. Students will defend the<lb />completed thesis at an oral session conducted by their<lb />thesis committee.<lb /><lb />Other Requirements<lb /><lb />A comprehensive examination is required. It includes the<lb />core course areas (PSYC 6427 and 6430) and, in the A/E<lb />concentration, PSYC 6412 and 6421 and one elective. This<lb />examination is normally taken in the second year.<lb /><lb />A research skill requirement of not less than 3 semester<lb />hours from certain areas determined by the department<lb />or from a foreign language must be met.<lb /><lb />Additional work in statistics or computer science is<lb />recommended if it has not already been taken as an<lb />elective. These credit hours do not count toward the 36<lb />semester hours required for the masterTs degree.<lb /><lb />Application and Admission<lb /><lb />Admission to the general psychology program is<lb />contingent on meeting all requirements of the ECU<lb />Graduate School and being recommended by the graduate<lb />admissions committee of the Department of Psychology.<lb />A completed application will include a Graduate School<lb />application; a Department of Psychology basic informa-<lb />tion sheet; GRE verbal, quantitative, and advanced test<lb />scores; complete college transcripts; and a minimum of<lb />two letters of recommendation (at least one from a<lb />sychologist). Interviews are occasionally requested.<lb /><lb />A combination of GRE scores, grade point average, and<lb />references is used in making the admission decision.<lb />Applicants should score above the fiftieth percentile on<lb />the GRE and have above a 3.0 GPA, both overall and in<lb />their major.<lb /><lb />The department requires that all graduate students have a<lb />common core of undergraduate psychology courses in<lb />introductory psychology, psychological statistics,<lb />experimental psychology, learning, personality,<lb />hysiological psychology, and tests and measurements.<lb />Applicants are admitted with deficiencies, but those must<lb />be met by appropriate undergraduate course work. These<lb />courses will not count toward the masterTs degree. An<lb />undergraduate course in computer science is also highly<lb />recommended.<lb /><lb />The Department of Psychology admissions screening<lb />rocedure begins March 15. All application materials<lb />must be submitted prior to that date. Final decisions<lb />generally are sent out in April. The general program will<lb />accept applications after the March 15 deadline, but<lb />spaces may be limited.<lb /><lb />For course sequencing, it is recommended that students<lb />begin graduate work in the fall semester. Admissions for<lb />entrance at other times should be discussed with the<lb />rogram chair.</p>

        <p>Financial Support<lb /><lb />Research assistantships are generally available for<lb />applicants. A letter accompanying the application<lb />materials indicating the desire and basis for needing<lb />financial assistance is considered an application for an<lb />assistantship.<lb /><lb />Additional Information<lb /><lb />Additional information, including appointments for<lb />further discussion, can be obtained by contacting:<lb /><lb />William F.
