<p>Overview<lb /><lb />The clinical psychology graduate program at East<lb />Carolina University is a two-year, 45 semester-hour<lb />rogram that prepares students for work as psychologists<lb />in a variety of settings or for further study at the doctoral<lb />level. A full-time six-month working internship at a<lb />mental health facility is required. Five staff members<lb />currently teach the required clinical graduate courses.<lb /><lb />Employment Opportunities<lb /><lb />Clinical psychology graduates have a good history of<lb />employment in the field. At present, more job openings<lb />exist for masterTs-level psychologists than individuals to<lb />fill these jobs. While a majority of graduates accept mental<lb />health center positions throughout North Carolina, others<lb />work in such varied settings as developmental evaluation<lb />clinics, prisons, community colleges, hospitals, and<lb />rivate practice in and out of state. Approximately 30<lb />ercent of clinical graduates elect to pursue a PhD after<lb />completing the program.<lb /><lb />Licensure in North Carolina<lb /><lb />In North Carolina, licensure is required to practice as a<lb />clinical psychologist. Students who have completed the<lb />MA program in clinical psychology may apply to the<lb />North Carolina Board of Examiners in psychology for<lb />consideration for licensure as a psychological associate.<lb /><lb />rogram Description<lb /><lb />During the first academic year, nine required courses are<lb />taken, including two courses in assessment; two courses<lb />in treatment; ethics and professional practice; interview-<lb />ing; psychopathology; learning; and statistics. These<lb />courses involve theoretical, professional, and practicum-<lb />oriented classroom work.<lb /><lb />Extensive individualized instruction, including role<lb />laying, check-off performance requirements, and other<lb />feedback techniques enhance the quality of the practicum<lb />courses. This practicum work also involves weekly<lb />lacements in several on- and off-campus agencies.<lb /><lb />Additionally, at least two electives (6 semester hours) are<lb />required as part of the 45-hour program. In coordination<lb />with the program director, students select electives to<lb />meet their individual training goals and interests. Elec-<lb />tives may be chosen from graduate courses taught in the<lb />Department of Psychology or from other graduate areas.<lb /><lb />Internship<lb /><lb />Approximately $20,000 in training grants is brought into<lb />the department each year to support students in the six-<lb /><lb />month internships. These grants, which provide for<lb />stipends of approximately $500 per month, have been<lb />stable for some years.<lb /><lb />Internship placements are available in centers where<lb />doctoral-level psychologists provide supervision.<lb />Internship guidelines, developed in May 1980, enable<lb />coordination between the program and the agency for the<lb />maintenance of adequately supervised"though indi-<lb />vidually unique"internship placements. Communica-<lb />tion between the program and supervisors, along with<lb />end-of-internship evaluations, permits adequate quality<lb />control.<lb /><lb />Thesis<lb /><lb />The masterTs thesis in psychology is a professional<lb />research paper and an example of students' research and<lb />writing skills. Students will present the completed thesis<lb />at an oral examination conducted by the thesis committee<lb />as the last step in the process. Six semester-hour credits<lb />are allowed for the thesis.<lb /><lb />Other Requirements<lb /><lb />A comprehensive examination, which tests studentsT<lb />knowledge in the areas of core and specialty course work,<lb />is required and is normally taken in the second year.<lb />Additionally, a research skill requirement of not less than<lb />3 semester hours from certain areas determined by the<lb />department, or from a foreign language, must be met.<lb /><lb />Applications<lb /><lb />It is strongly recommended that all applicants take a<lb />common core of undergraduate psychology courses<lb />before applying to the clinical program. These include<lb />introductory psychology, psychological statistics,<lb />experimental psychology, learning, personality, physi-<lb />ological psychology, tests and measurements, and<lb />abnormal psychology.<lb /><lb />Over the past several years, an average of forty-five<lb />students has applied to the clinical program from which<lb />eight are selected as the first-year class. Average scores on<lb />the objective measures for students admitted into the<lb />rogram generally fall in the following ranges:<lb /><lb />GRE Aptitude (Verbal, Quantitative) 1000-1100<lb />Advanced Psychology GRE 540-600<lb />Undergraduate GPA 3.15-3.35<lb />sychology GPA 3.40-3.60<lb />Senior Year GPA 3.45-3.70<lb /><lb />Admission to the clinical program is contingent upon<lb />meeting all requirements of the ECU Graduate School and<lb />being recommended by the graduate admission commit-</p>

<p>tee of the Department of Psychology. A completed appli-<lb />cation will include a Graduate School application; a De-<lb />artment of Psychology basic information sheet; GRE<lb />verbal, quantitative, and advanced test scores; complete<lb />college transcripts; and a minimum of two letters of rec-<lb />ommendation (at least one from a psychologist).<lb /><lb />An on-site interview is required. Applicants may be<lb />admitted with deficiencies that must be met by appropri-<lb />ate undergraduate course work. These courses do not<lb />count toward the masterTs degree.<lb /><lb />Screening and Admissions<lb /><lb />The admissions screening procedure begins on March 15<lb />of each year. All application material must be received by<lb />that date.<lb /><lb />All clinical faculty as well as the graduate admissions<lb />committee are involved in evaluating candidates. The<lb />ractice of conducting on-site interviews allows candi-<lb />dates, as well as faculty, the opportunity to evaluate each<lb />other.<lb /><lb />Fifteen to twenty candidates, selected from the completed<lb />applications, will be interviewed prior to the final<lb />selections. These interviews are typically held during<lb />early April, with the final decisions being made by late<lb />April and early May.<lb /><lb />Financial Support<lb /><lb />In addition to the six-month paid internship, research<lb />assistantships generally are available for applicants. A<lb />letter to the program director indicating the desire and<lb />basis for needing financial assistance is considered an<lb />application for an assistantship.<lb /><lb />Additional Information<lb /><lb />Additional information, including appointments for<lb />further discussion, can be obtained by contacting:<lb /><lb />Thomas W.
