          <lb />When each member of East Carolina Universitys team<lb />epped onto campus for the first time something caught<lb />their eye and told them that this is where they belonged.<lb />Whether you were a student attending classes for the first time, a professor holding<lb />your first lecture, or an administrator having your first meeting, a part of ECU stood out<lb />in your mind, reassuring you that the rest of your future would begin here.<lb />Some say it was the well-groomed grounds that made them choose ECU. Others claim<lb />that the charming toll of the clock each hour was the comfort they needed to join the<lb />family. Many, however, based their decision on the university's reputation for excellence<lb />and success in developing the leaders of tomorrow<lb /><lb />2<lb />BUCCANEER Opening<lb /></p>

        <p>
          <lb />
          <lb />The reason you made ECU your<lb />home is not the most important<lb />factor. It is instead that you took the<lb />most important step to creating the<lb />person you would become.<lb />Many of these steps were taken<lb />on August 24th as the 2005-2006<lb />academic year began, hosting 1,442<lb />full-time faculty members, 3,200<lb />staff members, and over 23,000<lb />Stuagents on the universitys 4./<lb />million square foot campus.<lb />While these people may seem<lb />to be no different than the countless<lb />others associated with colleges<lb />around the world, those who are<lb />involved with ECU know that is not<lb />the case.<lb />mt POU each person is truly<lb />unique. Everyone is from somewhere<lb />different and has something new to<lb />teach you. The small towns, huge<lb /><lb />cities, various states and diverse<lb />countries of the world unite on<lb />Our university to meet a central<lb />goal, to improve the quality of<lb />lite through education. W ale<lb />our homes may have decided<lb />where our high schools would be, our<lb />hearts decided where we would go to<lb />collece. ECU captites differcnccs,<lb />likenesses, individuality, and unity<lb />but still allows those present to<lb />find and make friendships that last<lb />a lifetime.<lb />When we look back on our<lb />years here we will be reminded of<lb />how hectic move-in days were and<lb />how great it was the day our biology<lb />labs Where canceled because of<lb />impending snow flurries. We will<lb />recall the girl who moved into the<lb />room next door because her school<lb />mas lost during the tragedy of<lb /><lb />eo ee a<lb /><lb />" wes<lb /><lb />Hurricane Katrina. We will see<lb />pictures of ECUs Army cadets and<lb />be reminded of the war the United<lb />States was in with Iraq and how each<lb />person can make a difference.<lb />A point scored against Duke<lb />might be just the winning touchdown<lb />to another school, but to us and our<lb />fellow students here at East Carolina,<lb />it is a triumph. It was more than a<lb />win, but a success against the odds.<lb />Each team member is more than<lb />an athlete; he is a student, a son, a<lb />friend, and devotion that we all can<lb />understand. His worries are ours<lb />and he understands the pressures<lb />we face.<lb />East Carolina University displays<lb />both passion and purpose with each<lb />new year and shows everyone what<lb />school spirit really is and what it is<lb />like to be a Pirate.<lb /><lb />4 Opening<lb />BUCCANEER<lb /></p>

          <lb />The life of a college student isnt always about the<lb />bookish scholars we all know we are deep down inside<lb />somewhere. There is also the night life, the parties and<lb />the night outings. For many of us, the weekend begins on<lb />Thursday.<lb />some students do it; they party all night and<lb />Many outsiders dont understand how<lb /><lb />have class the next day while still managing to<lb />keep their grades up. Its hard to be a college<lb />student. We have to study hard and get our<lb />work done so we can go out at night and then<lb />we have to get up for class the next day. It has<lb />definitely taught me the meaning of responsibility,<lb />stated junior Communication major Allie Moore.<lb />A typical college students day starts out as they wake up<lb />at the crack of dawn, or five minutes before their 10 am class<lb />starts and they prepare to make their grand entrance into the<lb />world. They roll out of bed and throw on the closest outfit<lb />Miney<lb />then wearily find their way to class and manage to find a seat<lb />they can find, sometimes matching but not always.<lb />not directly in the teachers vision. Just as they take their<lb />seat, their class begins, they sit through it, and after class its<lb />time to head home or to work.<lb />By the time the student has hit work they are actually<lb />awake, functioning properly, and able to answer questions<lb />with words. After work is over, the student enjoys a quick<lb />but nutritious meal that satisfies the grumbling stomach that<lb />has been fed caffeine all day instead of real food. The nap<lb />which follows dinner happens to be the most important part<lb />of the day. This nap is essential for any partier who intends<lb />to make a full experience out of their night.<lb />After the slumbering student has awoken, they are able to<lb />take a shower and begin to prepare for the night. Preparation<lb />for the night includes making the phone calls to see where<lb />everyone is going and who they will be going with. Next,<lb />of course, comes the phone call to Safe-Ride or the wait for<lb />the bus. These are the two safest routes of transportation to<lb />and from downtown and not to mention in the winter time,<lb />they are also the warmest. On the bus, students run into<lb />other students who are on their way downtown and strike<lb />up interesting and memorable conversations with complete<lb />strangers and possibly even taking pictures. Later on these<lb />pictures will provide for humorous conversations, including<lb />many questions about who they are with in that picture.<lb />College Double Life<lb /><lb />As the night continues on the student enjoys the night<lb />away from their studies, books and planners that haunt them<lb />with school tasks that need to be completed. Downtown the<lb />student runs into almost every person they know on campus<lb />and will be hearing stories of these encounters for<lb />weeks to come. However, no night downtown is<lb />perfect and as the inevitable fight ensues, they<lb />are forced to leave and head across the street to<lb />Gli hex le,<lb />When the night winds down to an end,<lb />normally in the wee hours of the morning, the<lb />student then retires to their home where they find<lb />somewhere to sleep, whether it be the sofa, floor or if<lb />theyre lucky their bed. Only a few hours later will the student<lb />wake up to the annoying consistent beep of an alarm clock<lb />ringing in their ear. They steadily sit up, glance around, stand<lb />and prepare for yet another day in their college career.<lb />Time management is something that you learn as<lb />an ECU student, you learn how to stay out until 3 in the<lb />morning and still make it to class at 8) stated senior James<lb />McLeod Holland a Health Service Management major.<lb />Perhaps it is downtown that students are using what they<lb />learn in the classroom, not in the real world.<lb /><lb />BUCCANEER<lb /><lb />o pit<lb />r<lb />|<lb />:<lb />|<lb />\<lb />|<lb />:<lb />4<lb />og oo ea a <lb />|<lb />:<lb />l<lb />\ Student Life Ls<lb /></p>

          <lb />No Place Like Home<lb />What are the advantages and disadvantages of living<lb />on campus?<lb />Many factors come into play when choosing the<lb />right place to live during your college career. While most<lb />students choose to live in the dorms for at least one<lb />year during their college life, many stay there the<lb />whole time, making lasting friendships with<lb />roommates and people on the same hall. Sure<lb />apartments have their perks, but dorm life can<lb />be easier and more convenient.<lb />"Where you live is much more than<lb />just a place to lay your head at night,<lb />Communications major Jessalyn Santiago<lb />explains. "It decides how you will spend your<lb />free time, what kinds of people you will meet<lb />and much more:<lb />Many people enjoy the security of having<lb />so many people around to hang out with. In<lb />some ways, it is like having a family around<lb />24/7 and many students who meet people in<lb />the dorms are friends with those same people<lb />during their entire college career.<lb />"In the dorms, there is always someone<lb />there to lend you a helping hand or to let you borrow<lb />something when you need it; Soheila Mobarak says. "Also,<lb />there is the trusty resident advisor there to assist you with<lb />any problems you may have and coordinate fun activities<lb />for your hall to grow close<lb />Proximity is a major advantage of living in the dorm.<lb />You are a mere walk away from your classes, the library,<lb />the student health center, dinning halls, the rec center,<lb />downtown and more. Everything you need is right under<lb />your nose, eliminating the need to drive and find parking.<lb />Still, there is constant debate over what is cheaper in<lb />the long run, apartments or dorms?<lb />Dorms are all inclusive, meaning they include, cable,<lb />internet, furniture, water/sewer, and electricity. Many<lb /><lb />"Where you<lb />live is more<lb />than just a<lb />place to lay<lb />your head"<lb /><lb />students struggle to pay for college so money is a major<lb />thing to consider when looking for a place to live.<lb />On the other hand, many people love to move into<lb />apartments for the luxury of more space and privacy. It<lb />is often a lot nicer to have a full size kitchen,<lb />your own washer and dryer, larger closets, and<lb />your own bathroom, not to mention saying<lb />"goodbye" to shower shoes.<lb />"I want am apartment because @<lb />won't have to live in one tiny room with<lb />another person; Freshman Paige Ward explains.<lb /><lb />"I am beginning to forget what privacy<lb />really is<lb />While it is nice to be able to escape |<lb />to your own bedroom and be able to <lb />avoid an annoying roommate, many still<lb />think that the convience of campus life is<lb />unsurpassable.<lb />"You can keep your car outside your<lb />apartment and not have to worry about<lb />getting a parking ticket, which is great,<lb />Jamie Renn says. "But rushing to campus<lb />late and trying to find a parking spot in a<lb />hurry is barely worth it<lb />Many apartments around the university have<lb />amenities like workout facilities, pools, computer rooms<lb />and bus access that help make students' lives much less<lb />complicated.<lb />"With an apartments, you feel more grown up<lb />because you feel like you really have a place to make your<lb />own Jamie West explains. "A few apartments even allow<lb />pets and have more room if your friends want to come<lb />over and hang out!<lb />Whatever place you decide to call home can easily be<lb />enjoyed and even given little touches to make it your own.<lb />As long as you have a roof over your head and a warm<lb />bed to snuggle in, you'll be set for college life.<lb />""""<lb /><lb />14 Student Life<lb />BUCCANEER<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />Chances are that youve said<lb />Pll just Facebook you.<lb />this or heard it spoken at some point over the past two<lb />years. You may be entirely opposed to the concept or you<lb />may have just tried to add the guy who sat behind you at<lb />The Croatan to your friends list, but youve heard of it<lb />nonetheless. Facebook is just one of many sites in the online<lb />social networking trend and was launched February 4,<lb />2004 by four friends at Harvard University. It was<lb />based off the idea of a face book, which is a<lb />book of names and photographs of a university's<lb />incoming freshman class and is distributed at<lb />The websités<lb />popularity spread like wildfire across the Harvard<lb />the start of the academic year.<lb />campus and within a few weeks over half of the<lb />undergraduate population had registered. Facebook<lb />first appeared on East Carolinds campus in mid-November<lb />2004 a little over a year later, the network had expanded to<lb />include 2,000+ colleges and 25,000+ high school institutions<lb />across the United States, Canada, Mexico, the UK, Australia,<lb />New Zealand, and Ireland, including more than 11 million<lb />users worldwide.<lb />Once registered, students can create personalized profiles<lb />with pictures of themselves and various information such as<lb />their interests, relationship status, clubs/jobs and favorite<lb />music, movies, and TV shows. Users can also search for<lb />other members based on any of the aforementioned criteria.<lb />However, if a person does not attend the same school as the<lb />searcher, their profile cannot be viewed until friendship is<lb />confirmed. Facebook features several distinctive features such<lb />as a Wall where the users friends can post comments or<lb />common interest groups. These groups range from real campus<lb />or Greek organizations, sports interests and common interest<lb />groups based on geographical affiliation to even ones dedicated<lb />to the very website (I Should Never Have Started Facebook...<lb />and Facebook Addicts).<lb />Use of Facebook isrit limited to those currently enrolled<lb />in college, however. Oftentimes, graduates still maintain<lb />their profiles and use the site as an easy and convenient<lb />way to keep in contact with friends who may have moved<lb />on to other areas. Its a great transitional tool for recent<lb />graduates, a means for them to still feel a part of the<lb />university and remain in touch with their friends. still<lb /><lb />attending; said ECU Alum Candace Drake.<lb />One of the most interesting aspects of sites such as<lb />Facebook is the almost C-list level celebrity status that is<lb />occasionally afforded to some of its users, whether locally or<lb />nationally. One ECU Facebooker in particular has upwards<lb />of 2000 confirmed friends and is listed as a groupie (one<lb />that claims many friends within groups) for nearly every<lb />group on the site. However, this sort of notoriety<lb />pales in comparison to that of Florida Staté Jenn<lb />Sterger, who has parlayed her Facebook fame<lb />into spreads in popular meris magazine Maxim<lb />and even her own Playboy photo shoot. Sterger<lb />popularity only grew once her high visibility at<lb />televised FSU athletic events caused a barrage of<lb />friend confirmations from college-aged men from<lb />universities. According to Sports Illustrated, Jenn has<lb />received over 16,000 friend requests on her Facebook profile<lb />since she was first spotted by cameramen at a Florida State<lb />football game.<lb />Facebookers are finding other ways to attract attention,<lb />but not always the positive variety. One of the more<lb />interesting common interest groups available to join is ~I<lb />Would So Have Sex In the Library-ECU Chapter", which<lb />according to a security guard in the library, the ECU Police<lb />maintains a "watch list" of the members of that group.<lb />Police have also taken note of instances of underage drinking<lb />documented in photos posted on Facebook, some of<lb />which have resulted in citations. Similarly, universities are<lb />supplying potential employers with alumni addresses in order<lb />to check in on job prospects and what they see may cause<lb />them to be dismissed as a candidate.<lb />It is this sort of third party interaction that makes<lb />some users a bit hesitant. While many users post home<lb />addresses, telephone numbers, etc., some are hesitant on what<lb />information they want made available on Facebook due to the<lb />fear of stalkers or other security issues. There is some hope<lb />for the savvy user, however. Limitations can also be placed on<lb />who can view their profile, contact information, and even their<lb />photo albums to "friends of friends" or only friends. While<lb />online networking may be the convenient, seemingly safe way<lb />to keep up with friends during and after college, soon-to-be-<lb />grads should take note: Big brother is facebooking.<lb /><lb />16 Student Life<lb />BUCCANEER |!<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />Sexual Preferences<lb />Gay. Lesbian. Bi-sexual. All of these words are used<lb />in regular language and are not foreign to anyone. Though<lb />various forms of sexual orientation are more widely<lb />accepted than they were ten years ago, they still<lb />provoke controversy in some form or fashion on<lb />campus today. According to data collected by<lb />ECU, sexual orientation ranked highest with<lb />68 percent of students hearing three or more<lb />Tits 1s<lb />compared to the 55 percent hearing similar remarks<lb />insensitive or disparaging remarks.<lb />about race, 50 percent toward women, 53 percent for<lb />religion, and 61 percent for disability. Seventy-three percent<lb />of those hearing the remarks about sexuality were men and<lb />65 percent were females.<lb />The awareness and education of the presence of gays,<lb />lesbians, and bisexuals on campus was heightened with<lb />the formation of an organization called B-GLAD, short for<lb />Bisexuals, Gays, Lesbians, and Allies for Diversity. According<lb />to current advisor Aaron Lucier, student organizations<lb />existed before B-GLAD that espoused similar ideologies.<lb />However, they folded before 1994 which was the year<lb />B-GLAD was formed.<lb />There was much resistance on the part of the Student<lb />Government Association and because of a special clause<lb />preventing funding for special interest groups, B-Glad was<lb />denied. However, this was changed a few years later at the<lb />same time that SGA allowed funding for religious groups.<lb />B-GLAD has been a major force in improving the life of<lb />GLBT (gays lesbians bi-sexuals transgender) students in<lb />campus and in the community) stated Lucier. B-GLAD puts<lb />on panels that have allowed students to learn about the lives<lb /><lb />of GLBT people in an educational environment.<lb />B-GLAD President Danielle Campbell recalled, Each<lb />year we have more and more teachers who request<lb />the panels in their classrooms. This shows that the<lb />teachers aren't always going strictly by the book<lb />Also, on top of these panels the group has also<lb />put on two movies, one about the lives of four<lb />transgender students, and a hate crime movie.<lb />Not only on the ECU campus has such a tolerant<lb />attitude become more accepted, but also on a<lb />national level.<lb />"ECU is also a better place for GLBT students, faculty,<lb />and staff because the nation and region have changed.<lb />Will and Grace and other shows with gays characters have<lb />changed our media, and the debate on gays and lesbians in<lb />the military and more recently the debate on the right for<lb />GLBT to marry has created a great deal of discussion on and<lb />off campus; remarked Lucier. One-student remarks, ~As<lb />far as I have experienced, the campus is pretty accepting to<lb />homosexuals. There are always going to be people who dont<lb />agree with the ~lifestyle; but I have never heard anything<lb />negative from anyone<lb />Despite the fact that alternative lifestyles have gained<lb />widespread acceptance, there are still those who disapprove<lb />and make it known. As with other groups whose mere<lb />existence stokes debate, they have had people rip down flyers<lb />and even discourage others from attending their events.<lb />From their perspective, however, B-GLAD continues to work<lb />for the interests of all students on campus, not simply those<lb />from the gay and lesbian community by fostering a secure<lb />academic environment for the beliefs of many.<lb /><lb />__<lb />7]<lb />Ry<lb />~~<lb />XN<lb />|<lb />\<lb />" a fk<lb />~ ~~ &amp; es <lb />a &amp;<lb />== ae = \<lb />30 Student Life t BUCCANEER<lb /></p>

          <lb />Holtz brings New Optimism to Pirate Football<lb />By: Ronnie Woodward<lb />In the second overtime of the<lb />2001 GMAC Bowl, Marshall quarterback<lb />Byron Leftwich connected with Josh Davis<lb />for an 8-yard touchdown pass to beat East<lb />Carolina, who led 38-8 at halftime. The<lb />heartbreaking 64-61 loss started an era the<lb />pirate nation would like to forget.<lb />The three seasons that followed were<lb />filled with administrative changes, coaching<lb />changes, and overall turmoil as the Pirates<lb />compiled a record of 7-28 and headed in<lb />the wrong direction. Enter Skip Holtz.<lb />Holtz, son of coaching legend Lou<lb />Holtz, was hired to revitalize the once<lb />proud Pirate program.<lb />I promise you will have every ounce<lb />of energy, soul, and life that I have in order<lb />to put this program back where it belongs<lb />and thats at a championship level; Holtz<lb />said at his initial press conference as Head<lb />Coach of the Pirates.<lb />The Pirates appeared in four bowl<lb />games in the ~90s, highlighted by the 1992<lb />Peach Bowl victory over arch-rival N.C.<lb />State. The 37-34 victory over the Wolfpack<lb />finalized the memorable season that found<lb />the Pirates ranked ninth nationally in the<lb />final Associated Press Poll.<lb />Athletic Director Terry Holland<lb />believes Holtz has the needed experience<lb />and attributes to guide the Pirate ship back<lb />to success.<lb />We have great confidence in<lb />Skip 10 take Over amd Icdd our icorballl<lb />program; Holland said. His background<lb />and enthusiasm make him a perfect fit for<lb />BCU<lb />In Holts inaugural season the Pirates<lb />finished with a .500 record in Conference<lb />USA for the first time simce 2002, while<lb />compiling an overall record of 5-6. The<lb />team came up one win short of meeting its<lb />goal of reaching a bowl game but ended the<lb />season On a positive note with wins against<lb />Marshall and UAB.<lb />We have came a long way and got<lb />better and better? Holtz said after the UAB<lb />win. Now all we can do is get better in the<lb />off season and keep building this program<lb />Offensive lineman Andrew Farr<lb />said Holtz had a massive influence on his<lb />decision to come to ECU)<lb />When I came on my official visit, he<lb />told me what he wanted to accomplish and<lb />what football at East Carolina University<lb />means to him, Farr said or Holtz. What<lb />he told me really sunk into me and got me<lb />excited about the future of Pirate football<lb />Farr also said that the ECU players<lb />and coaches are working hard to accomplish<lb />great things in the future.<lb />Hé {Holtz} been pushing us real<lb />Nard amd. its mot easy, but he doinebecause he wants to win bowl games and<lb />wit comterence USA, Fatt said. We as<lb />players have bonded together and we know<lb />what we have to do to get the job done<lb />Holland has arranged future games,<lb />starting im 2006, with ACC and regional<lb />competitors N.C. State, UNC. Viroing<lb />Tech and Virginia. Holland views these<lb />games as challenges but thinks Holtz 1s<lb />ready for the task.<lb />In spite of a difficult schedule " Next<lb />year 12006) we Mave SO pow! teams om<lb />our schedule and seven of those are bowl<lb />champions " Coach Holtz is building a<lb />foundation for ECU football that will pay<lb />dividends for years to come<lb /><lb />BUCCANEER<lb />Sports<lb />69<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />College of Business<lb />ECU business students win national competition<lb />Students from the ECU School of<lb />Business were awarded first place in<lb />a national competition recently. The<lb />competition itself is based off investigative<lb />work done with local businesses where<lb />students identify possible problems and<lb />seek ways to eliminate those problems.<lb />Racheal Baxter, Bryant Beddard, Chris<lb />Long, Brian Ozment, and Tauris Speight<lb />were selected for first place regarding their<lb />work with Bennett Vineyards, which is<lb />located in Edward, N.C.<lb />The students, who were members of<lb />a ~seniors only class taught by Professor<lb />Michael Harris, Director of the Small<lb />Business Institute, assigned the<lb />vineyard as their project. Students worked<lb />closely with business members, interviewing<lb />them and researching the industry of the<lb />business itself. Additionally, the team<lb />were<lb />researched and monitored current industry<lb />trends. The information will help discover<lb />any issues that the students might be able<lb /><lb />114<lb />to give advice on in an endeavor to make<lb />the company more profitable.<lb />The small business class gives students<lb />hands on time with real life local businesses,<lb />and the experience takes everything<lb />students have learned up to that point and<lb />gives them a chance to use it.<lb />"It's really a team effort that makes the<lb />Small Business Institute work" said Harris.<lb />Harris prides himself on<lb />excellent students who he knows will put<lb />forth their best effort with their work.<lb />The professor led the team not only to<lb />a first place victory this year, but a second<lb />place victory the previous year.<lb />"This experience helped me find my<lb />passion. Dr. Harris truly changed my<lb />life. He saw my potential and nurtured<lb />it, encouraging me to take a leadership<lb />position; said Racheal Baxter.<lb />Baxter is a graduate who is currently<lb />seeking her MBA.<lb />Baxter described the experience as<lb />having<lb />pretty intense considering that it was the<lb />first time that any of the students had<lb />received any hands on in-depth experience<lb />with a company.<lb />She stressed that students who are<lb />considering opening a business in the future<lb />that knowing one individual skill of the<lb />business, such as marketing or accounting,<lb />simply won't cut it. A person needs to<lb />know the ins and outs of every aspect. This<lb />program takes that charge.<lb />"I'm a believer that if you challenge<lb />students, and if you say, look, this is a real<lb />company. This company, their livelihood<lb />is at stake. In this semester, you can<lb />actually give them a solution and let them<lb />implement so that they make more money.<lb />If the stakes are critical, students rise to the<lb />challenge said Harris.<lb />Both Harris and Baxter highly<lb />encourage students to look into the small<lb />business program at ECU<lb />By Clayton Bauman<lb /><lb />THE CHRONICLE<lb /><lb />BUCCANEER<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />Pushing the Limits<lb />College of Health and Human Performance<lb />The mission of the College of Health Carolina became a university, a large and founding Dean of the College of Health<lb />and Human Performance is to provide<lb />instruction, conduct research, and perform<lb />service in health, exercise science, and<lb />recreation and leisure. The primary focus<lb />of the college is to advance and disseminate<lb />knowledge concerning maintenance<lb />and enhancement of health, physical<lb />performance, and quality of life.<lb />After only 10 years as a school, the<lb />complexity and growth of our programs has<lb />allowed us to reorganize as a college. The<lb />original Department of Physical Education<lb />was a component of the East Carolina<lb />Teachers Training School in 1907. With<lb />each succeeding status change for ECU,<lb />e.g., from Teachers Training School, to<lb />Teachers College, to East Carolina College,<lb />to East Carolina University, the department<lb />assumed greater status. By the time East<lb />strong Department of Health, Physical<lb />Education, Recreation and Safety resided<lb />in the College of Arts and Sciences. With<lb />over sixty-five faculty members the school<lb />is among the largest and most productive<lb />on campus.<lb />In 1982, the Human Performance<lb />Laboratory was instituted and immediately<lb />established itself as an important campus-<lb />wide facility for research and clinical<lb />programs dealing with an array of scientific<lb />and health-related issues.<lb />In 1993, the Department of Health,<lb />Physical Education, Recreation and<lb />Safety became the eleventh professional<lb />school on the East Carolina University<lb />campus. Dr. Carolyn Hampton was<lb />appointed Interim Dean, and in 1994 Dr.<lb />Zauner assumed the position of<lb />Christian<lb /><lb />and Human Performance.<lb />In 1999, Dr. Glen Gilbert was<lb />named the second Dean of the schoo<lb />after spending two years as ECU Chair of<lb />the Department of Health Education and<lb />Promotion. Dr. Gilbert is a noted authority<lb />and scholar on topics of public health,<lb />and school health education. Dr. Gilbert<lb />received his doctorate from the Ohio State<lb />University, and has held positions with the<lb />U.S. Public Health Service, the University<lb />of Maryland, Portland State University, and<lb />UNGGreensboro. In 2003 the School of<lb />Health &amp; Human Performance became the<lb />College of Health &amp; Human Performance.<lb />Dr. Sharon Knight and Dr. Susan McGhee<lb />serve the college as Associate Deans.<lb /><lb />-ECU Website<lb /><lb />Academics<lb /></p>

In fact, many Darden<lb />Restaurant concepts (Olive Garden, Bahama<lb />Breeze, Smokey Bones, et al) have successfully<lb />recruited, hired, and promoted alumni<lb />from East Carolina Universitys Hospitality<lb />Management Program said Chandler.<lb />From an academic standpoint, Quantity<lb />Food production and Service Management,<lb />or more simply NUMH 4110 &amp; 4111, isa<lb />rigorous exercise in food service that exposes<lb />students to all conceivable responsibilities<lb />of normal day-to-day restaurant operation.<lb />Students can expect to spend as much as<lb />twenty-one hours per week for about nine<lb />weeks working outside of the class or lab<lb />researching the best and most cost effective<lb />dishes, honing their service and culinary<lb />execution, and preparing their final portfolio.<lb />Each meal consists of three courses, salad/<lb />appetizer, entrée, and desert, which students<lb />are allowed a budget of $3.75 per person.<lb />In the ~real world, this budget is at least<lb />15% above the national industry average,<lb />which means the budget should be $2.63<lb />per person " or less. Faculty keeps a close eye on<lb />work assignments to assure no student 1s<lb />forced into undesirablé positions longer than<lb />necessary. Each team works two shifts in the<lb />dining room and three in the kitchen with<lb />each team member acting as manager for one<lb />luncheon. Each team member is evaluated on<lb />their professionalism, demeanor, and mastery<lb />of the course-applicable skills based on a time<lb />tested assessment platform.<lb />In the end, Dr. Chandler wants his<lb />students to come away with what he considers<lb />the most important trait of any good business<lb />person " the ability to manage other people.<lb />If you cart manage people, you cart manage<lb />any business Its not just a cold management<lb />perspective he requires, however. <lb />College of Technology and "<lb />Computer Science<lb />ECU maintains commitment to excellence in online instruction<lb />Several of ECU's degree programs,<lb />including computer science and business, have<lb />been ranked among the top three in the US.<lb />by college research group, GetEducated.com.<lb />The online program for MBA and<lb />computer science degrees are each ranked<lb />number one. The online education degree is<lb />rated number three.<lb />"ECU has strived not only to increase<lb />access through online programs, but also to<lb />ensure that the programs are the best they can<lb />be} said Elmer Poe, assistant vice chancellor for<lb />academic outreach. _<lb />"ECU's online programs are taught by<lb />the same faculty who teach on campus, and<lb />often the online students are in the same virtual<lb />~ classrooms as the campus students"<lb />The MBA program is considered the most<lb />cost-effective degree to get online. The top 25<lb />programs were ranked with respect to the in-<lb />state price tag. ECU is number one for in-state<lb />tuition, costing students only $3,578. That is<lb />more than $1,000 less than the number two<lb />school, Western Illinois University, where it<lb />costs $4,744 to attend in state.<lb />ECU's out-of-state tuition only amounts to<lb />$13,212. That is cheaper than the in-state tuition<lb />of the lower 13 schools on the top 25 list. No<lb />other North Carolina university made the list.<lb />GetEducated.com is an organization<lb />geared toward consumer-oriented students<lb />looking to get an education at an affordable<lb />cost. ECU's online computer science program is<lb />number one among a plethora of other public<lb />colleges competing for students.<lb />"Not surprisingly, eight of the top 10 best<lb />buys came from publicly funded universities;<lb />said Vicky Phillips, GetEducated.com CEO<lb />and chief analyst.<lb />"Many publicly funded universities in low-<lb />cost education states in the South and Midwest<lb />are beginning to offer their programs online for<lb />one flat fee. This means prospective students<lb />nationwide can begin enjoying low public<lb />college tuition rates that were once available<lb />only to the residents of selected states<lb />Online programs and distance education<lb />have grown increasingly popular at ECU, the<lb />state leader in DE programs. Last year, there<lb />were around 50,000 semester hours offered<lb />through distance education.<lb />"We have more to offer because our<lb />faculty has stepped up to the plate and put<lb />these programs on} said Carolyn K. Dunn,<lb />coordinator of marketing and summer study<lb />abroad.<lb />There are about 3,700 students who<lb />are enrolled in more than 50 of ECU's<lb />undergraduate, graduate and _ certificate<lb />programs. In today's global wired society,<lb />it is beneficial for ECU to be able to offer<lb />programs to people who would otherwise miss<lb />the opportunity to get a college education,<lb />Distance education encompasses many forms of<lb />technology and gives students a chance to learn |<lb />without having to commute long distances.<lb />"Distance learning may occur by surface<lb />mail, videotape, interactive TV, radio, satellite<lb />or any number of Internet technologies such |<lb />as message boards, chat rooms and desktop<lb />computer conferencing; Phillips said.<lb />It is important for prospective students<lb />to understand what constitutes an accredited ,<lb />online university though. Trouble can arise from _<lb />believing Internet scams that promise lavish<lb />degree options in miniscule periods of time.<lb />"There is currently a big boom in. 'state<lb />approved' schools offering degrees via distance<lb />learning, especially from California} Phillips said.<lb />"Many states regulate private training and "<lb />trade schools by putting them through a state<lb />approval process. This process is not the same<lb />as accreditation. <lb />Creating Miracles<lb />Brody School of Medicine<lb />In the early 1960s, a group of leaders<lb />from eastern North Carolina proposed that<lb />a medical school be established at what<lb />was then East Carolina College. They were<lb />concerned about the deficit of modern<lb />medical care available in the region, and<lb />about who would replace the generation of<lb />physicians then in practice. Over the next<lb />decade these and other men and women,<lb />under the determined leadership of the<lb />late Dr. Leo W. Jenkins, chancellor of the<lb />college, made the case for their idea to<lb />anyone who would listen.<lb />Brody School of Medicine at East<lb />Carolina University is accredited by the<lb />Liaison Committee on Medical Education.<lb />East Carolina University is accredited<lb /><lb />by the Southern Association of Colleges<lb />and Schools.<lb />In time, East Carolina University was<lb />authorized to establish a health affairs division<lb />as a foundation for a medical program,<lb />and then a one-year medical school whose<lb />participants completed their medical education<lb />at the University of North Carolina-Chapel<lb />Hill. Finally in 1974, the General Assembly<lb />of North Carolina appropriated the funds to<lb />establish a four-year medical school at East<lb />Carolina University.<lb />The legislature set forth a three-fold<lb />mission for the ECU School of Medicine:<lb />to increase the supply of primary care<lb />physicians to serve the state, to improve<lb />health status of citizens in eastern North<lb />Carolina, and to enhance the access of<lb />minority and disadvantaged students to a<lb />medical education. |<lb />Since 1977, when the first class of 28<lb />students enrolled in the four-year School<lb />of Medicine, the institution has grown<lb />dramatically in its teaching, research and<lb />patient care roles. Today, in its partnership.<lb />with University Health Systems of Eastern<lb />Carolina and regional physicians, the school<lb />is the educational centerpiece of one of<lb />North Carolina's largest and most productive |<lb />academic medical centers. In 1999, it was<lb />renamed the Brody School of Medicine at.<lb />East Carolina University, in recognition of the<lb />continuous support of the Brody family. |<lb />-ECU Website<lb /><lb />[28<lb />Academics |<lb /></p>

        <p>When the ECU community picked<lb />up the most recent copy of The East<lb />Carolinian in October of 2005 and read<lb />about the possibility of the university<lb />getting its yearbook back, they were<lb />immediately overjoyed. Nothing is able<lb />to capture memories quite like a yearbook<lb />and nothing will help us to remember this<lb />era in our lives like our yearbook can.<lb />The dictionary defines yearbook as<lb />a book published yearly as a report or<lb />summary of statistics or facts. However, a<lb />yearbook is much more than that.<lb />A yearbook is the one tool students can<lb />treasure, the tool that can bring us back<lb />to our years here with just the simple turn<lb />of a page. Flipping through the Student<lb />Life section of the ECU _ yearbook<lb />reminds us of the amazing win during<lb />Homecoming weekend or the opening of<lb />West End Dining Hall for which we all<lb />waited so long.<lb />Still, no matter how students long for<lb />the possible return of the book, few know<lb />the hard work and the struggles that must<lb />be endured to make it happen.<lb />In college you are unique. Everyone<lb />is from somewhere different and has<lb />something new to teach you. The small<lb />towns, huge cities, various states and<lb />diverse countries of the world join together<lb />in Our university to meet a central goal,<lb />to improve the quality of life through<lb />education.<lb />While our homes may have decided<lb />where our high schools would be, our hearts<lb />decided where we would go to college.<lb />yearbook captures differences,<lb />likenesses, individuality, and unity.<lb />Everyone here at ECU is alike in that they<lb />seek the ultimate goal of graduating and<lb />as we begin each new year, the yearbook<lb />captures the events that make it possible.<lb />When we look back on our years<lb />here we will smile to ourselves as we are<lb />reminded of how hectic move-in days<lb />were and how we were overjoyed when we<lb />discovered that the majority of the dorms<lb />were blessed with air conditioning.<lb />We will laugh at how thrilled we were<lb />the day our biology labs where canceled<lb />because of impending snow flurries and we<lb /><lb />Closing<lb />BUCCANEER<lb /><lb />BUCCANEER<lb />Closing<lb /><lb /></p>
