<lb />HALLOWEEN<lb />Halloween " is the party over? Over 8,000 students,<lb />residents, and visitors walked the streets of down-<lb />town Greenville on October 31, 1988, but the rockin<lb />turned to uprising. Several small riots occurred and<lb />police made over fifty arrests. These happenings<lb />caused Mayor Ed Carter to consider banning further<lb />Halloween festivities. Suprisingly, the accusing fin-<lb />ger was not pointed towards ECU students. In fact,<lb />the campus remained relatively peaceful. After in-<lb />vestigating the nights many brawls, police believe<lb />that mostly high school teens were to blame. On the<lb />whole, despite the mishaps of the evening, the<lb />decked out and dressed up ECU students partied<lb />wholeheartedly and Halloween ~88 was an event<lb />no one will soon forget!<lb />Love 2<lb />Wave big birdie to your friends on<lb />Contanche street.<lb />We are trying to reach a higher<lb />consciousness. this Halloween.<lb />Up, Up, and away.<lb />Walters<lb />34/Student Life<lb /></p>

<lb />Music Therapy Students Aid Troubled Adolescents<lb />A harmonious blend of town and<lb />gown occurred when Dr. Barbara<lb />Memory, ECU Director of Music<lb />Therapy, met with Tom Savidge,<lb />director of the local program for<lb />helping adolescents with substance<lb />abuse problems. This residential<lb />treatment program is for adolescents<lb />ages 14 to 18 who have problems of<lb />a moderate to severe degree with<lb />drug and alcohol abuse. The local<lb />program operates under the Pitt<lb />County Mental Health center but<lb />provides services for youth on referral<lb />from all areas of eastern North<lb />Carolina. These youngsters are hard<lb />to reach as they grapple with the<lb />usual problems of growing up such as<lb />the desire for independence, peer<lb />pressure, low-self esteem and con-<lb />fusion as to their roles in society and<lb />the family, all of which are accentu-<lb />ated with the use of mind-altering<lb />substances.<lb />One of the many ways to reach this<lb />group is through the magic of music.<lb />The beginning of the spring semester<lb />found jan Shuler, a senior music<lb />therapy major at ECU, doing just that<lb />" fedching Out wiht Mer taming,<lb />dedication and compassion to the<lb />youngsters in the local residential<lb />program. At first, Jan met with each<lb />individual to become acquainted and<lb />to determine his or her musical<lb />interests and background, if any. Not<lb />surprisingly, all of the present group<lb />chose the guitar as their instrument<lb />of choice. Jan is using the method of<lb />lyric improvisation to bring the group<lb />together. They are rewriting lyrics to<lb />already familiar rock or blues<lb />melodies which gives them a chance<lb />to express their own troubled feelings<lb />in an acceptable way. This is truly part<lb />of their therapy, a way to gain<lb />confidence, to belong to a group and<lb />to interact with others without the use<lb />of drugs. The therapist creates a bond<lb />upon which further counseling can<lb />build.<lb />Program director, Tom Savidge, is<lb />enthusiastic about the help his<lb />program receives from the ECU music<lb />JAN SHULER, senior music therapy major, preparing for class.<lb />54/Music Therapy<lb />therapy department. He feels that<lb />JanTs efforts contribute greatly to the<lb />clientTs chance of success. Not only<lb />are the clientTs confidence and self-<lb />esteem improved but communication<lb />skills and positive adult interaction<lb />are strengthened. Youngsters become<lb />less alienated and can recognize that<lb />many community-spirited citizens are<lb />genuinely interested in their well<lb />being. The success of programs such<lb />as these is dependent on the con-<lb />tinued involvement of community<lb />resources such as the School of<lb />Music.<lb />Incidentally, Mr. Savidge mentions<lb />that the donation of playable musical<lb />instruments, particularly guitars or<lb />other stringed instruments, would be<lb />greatly appreciated. Please contact<lb />him at the center (830-9380) or call<lb />Barbara Memory at the School of<lb />Music (757-6343).<lb /></p>

<lb />24 Hours<lb />At<lb />ECU<lb />~24 hours at ECUT began in the wee hours of Tuesday, April<lb />4th. Before many students rolled over to cut off their alarm<lb />clocks the staff of the ECU Photo Lab were well into their<lb />photo day. The first annual shoot was coordinated by Head<lb />Photographer Thomas Walters. Walters recruited the efforts of<lb />campus administration into the project by issuing them Dispos-<lb />able Fuji Cameras. When asked about the success of the proj-<lb />ect Walters commented, ~! feel that it worked fairly well in in-<lb />volving more of the campus in the media and hopes to see it<lb />continue into the future as an annual event.<lb />Ae<lb /></p>

<lb />Head coach Mike Steele entered his second season<lb />as Pirate mentor with a more solid outlook for the<lb />season. Two big reasons for that were he had some<lb />players who had college experience under their belts<lb />on the 1988-89 team and Blue Edwards returned to<lb />the Pirate team.<lb />With some predictions picking the Pirates to be<lb />among the leaders in the CAA, the pressure was on<lb />ECU to perform. They lived up to the expectations<lb />going 6-5 before entering CAA competition. They<lb />won two of their first three league games and<lb />matched their total number of wins from the year<lb />before at the mid-point of the season.<lb />After a mid-season slump, the Pirates finished the<lb />season strong winning five of their last seven con-<lb />tests, including a win in the first round of the CAA<lb />Tournament. The win in the tournament was only<lb />the second game the Pirates have won in the CAA<lb />Tournament. ECU defeated American in post-sea-<lb />son play and then lost a hard-fought battle to the<lb />eventual tournament winner George Mason in the<lb />semi-finals.<lb />The 15-14 record was the first winning mark for the<lb />Pirates since the 1982-83 season and a drastic<lb />improvement over the 8-20 mark of the year before.<lb />But the highlight of the season for the Pirates was<lb />the play of senior forward Blue Edwards. Edwards<lb />led the CAA in scoring and was named the CAA<lb />Player of the Year. Edwards was the first ECU<lb />player to ever win conference player of the year. He<lb />also was named to the first-team all-CAA team and<lb />was named honorable mention All-America by one<lb />national publication.<lb />Juniors Gus Hill and Reed Lose will anchor the Pi-<lb />rates in 1989-90 and they hope to continue the win<lb />ning tradition started by this vearTs team!<lb />Photos by Daily Reflector<lb />MenTs Basketball/247<lb />i<lb />ri<lb />a]<lb />e<lb />i<lb />=<lb />a<lb />OMI LTTE LRT RRNA ASAD APNE GIG RT EL GO DGGE IEP GO LTE FOE STABLE ARR L GE AE AT GAGE GS IM! The women swam their way to an 8-2 record and a mark of 4-1<lb />in the CAA.<lb />The women swam well in the CAA Championships, despite their fourth place finish. They broke four different CAA records<lb />at the meet. Bridgers led the way breaking both the 100 and 200-yard Breaststroke records in winning both events. Jennifer<lb />Muench also broke two records at the championship meet.<lb />Bridgers swam well all year and qualified to swim in the NCAA womenTs swimming championships in Indianapolis. She<lb />finished 22nd in the 200-yard breaststroke competition and it marked the first time an ECU female swimmer competed<lb />in the Division I championship meet. She also finished 26th in the 100-yard breaststroke.<lb />Bridgers and her teammates hope to better their fourth place finish in the CAA and bring home the gold in 1989-90.<lb />WomenTs Swimming/281<lb /><lb />setts<lb />BORN ic tev oo tpes TTL ALE ERR SEL SOT RRO TRE<lb />Sirsa ione Ran iveds ne tts tedvidy dds pgs FISELSSSACSSEDLERE AS ive<lb />Meo Crr NSRP Ls PE OTOMDOSE TET IIET.<lb />vonnreyveverededtereoCkr cones te<lb />és NONE in A <lb />ies<lb />LEO OO<lb />cosewontes<lb />ane<lb />rosea ataatepenmnbasbanb sonata eniescomncamncevnarenscanenaneetens<lb />" a ~ le a a<lb />~iclniadidhehadilnmataah<lb />ea ASIAN So Cade<lb />sonbtastanernccnoaes erences<lb /></p>

<lb />The lingering, memory of spring 1989 can be summarized in a single word ... WEATHER. Torna-<lb />does, heavy rains and snow slowed intramural action as the outdoor sport participants took part<lb />in MUDville T89. Indoor players found additional time to partake in schedule activities such as bas-<lb />ketball, innertube water polo, racquetball and bowling.<lb />The dynasty squads of old prepared for a repeat performance. In a word the ~FellowsT once again<lb />dunked, dribbled and danced their way into IM basketball history by capturing preseason and regu-<lb />lar season championships. Those otherwise deemed ~spring activitiesT again suffered through April<lb />snow showers and torrential downpours. Softball highlighted post springbreak activities along with<lb />18 holes of golf on either the links of Grifton or the disc golf course located on campus.<lb />Several special events captured the eye of several East Carolinians as the NIKE 3 Point Shoot Out,<lb />Rental Tool Co. Softball Slugfest, Corona Pre Season Softball Tourney and Challenge Week found<lb />their spot in the intramural schedule of activities.<lb />The fitness craze more than struck the halls of Memorial Gymnasium as crowds of faculty, staff and<lb />students registered for fitness classes offered throughout the semester. New class offerings such as<lb />Belly Busters, Circuit Training, Century Walk Club and faculty/staff Exercise Wisely provided par-<lb />ticipants with additional modes of body maintenance techniques.<lb />ECUTs Rugby squad heads up a line of successful club sport squads in spring 1989. The ruggers har-<lb />nessed youth and enthusiasm into a banner season to find themselves towering in talent over the<lb />majority of their opponents. They headed undefeated into the state rugby tournament after soundly<lb />defeating such powerhouse squads as Duke, Old Dominion, UNC-Chapel Hill and Virginia Tech.<lb />The Ultimate Irates hosted the annual Ultimax XIII at East Carolina in the hopes of finding them-<lb />selves in yet another Nationals tournament. A 35-9 record followed them to post season play as did<lb />a group of freshman standouts sure to lead the future Irates to additional championships. Lacrosse,<lb />underwater hockey, womens soccer, badminton and kayaking/canoeing rounded to the jammed<lb />packed organized club sport program.<lb />All in all, spring 1989 could be viewed as a semester for indoor action. East Carolinians were able<lb />to take advantage of a montage of fitness opportunities as well as competitive intramural sport play.<lb />A host of special events satisfied the unique recreational enthusiast and served as a calling card for<lb />all faculty, staff and students to participate in one of the most diverse recreational programs in the<lb />country.<lb />_ BIOCYcLie 931<lb />Fi<lb />Intramural Sports/303<lb /></p>

<lb />Following 1987Ts 5-6 record, the Pirates were looking to continue their improvement in 1988. But they ran into a buzz-<lb />saw, namely the tough schedule that they had to face. The Pirates squared off against six teams that ended up playing<lb />in bowl games and slipped to a 3-8 record.<lb />The Pirates started the season strong by defeating Tennessee Tech. But then the Pirates began to tail spin and mired<lb />through an eight game losing streak. The team showed a lot of character by working hard and playing with heart and<lb />determination. It paid off in the last two weeks of the season as the Pirates rebounded and won two games handily.<lb />They closed out the season with victories over Temple and Cincinnati, beating both schools on their own fields.<lb />Despite the losing record, ECUTs offense piled up the records. The Pirates set records in total passing yards (1,644),<lb />passing TDTs (14) and passing yards per game (149.5). They also set records in kickoff return yards per game (105.5)<lb />and total kickoff return yardage for a season (1,160).<lb />Following the season finale, head coach Art Baker stepped down as the coach of the Pirates to take a position in the<lb />University of South Carolina athletic department. This closed an era of Pirate football that spanned across four years.<lb />With BakerTs departure came a new coach and a new attitude towards Pirate football. New head coach Bill Lewis, from<lb />the University of Georgia, brought with him an aggressive get-after-it style of football. That, along with 35 of the top<lb />46 players on the squad returning and a fine recruiting class, has the Pirates and their fans excited about the upcoming<lb />1989 season. The Spirit of the East is alive and well in Pirate football.<lb />"<lb />Garrod Moody<lb />Darren Bynum<lb />Sam Beverly<lb />Terry Bennett<lb />Travis Hunter<lb />Brad Walsh<lb />Don Gaylor<lb />Andrew Ward<lb />Andre Fields<lb />Ed Brogdon<lb />R.L. (Photo<lb />Baker resigns as head coach<lb />By DOUG JOHNSON<lb />Sports Editor<lb />Art Baker announced Mon-<lb />day his resignation as the ECU<lb />Head Football coach effective at<lb />the end of the season, ending<lb />weeks of rumors and speculation.<lb />The announcement was<lb />made at BakerTs Monday press<lb />conference, as he read from a<lb />prepared statement. The decision<lb />was reached Sunday night during<lb />a meeting between Baker and<lb />Athletic Director Dave Hart, ac-<lb />cording to Baker and Hart.<lb />~In 1985, I accepted a four-<lb />year contract here as Head Foot-<lb />ball Coach, Baker said. My<lb />contract ends in January of 1989<lb />and in my conversations (with<lb />administration), I have received<lb />no assurances that my contract<lb />will be renewed. Therefore, in.<lb />recent conversations with Dave<lb />Hart, we have mutually agreed<lb />the time has come to clear the air.<lb />With this in mind, I am resigning<lb />as Head Coach today to be effec-<lb />tive at the conclusion of my con-<lb />tract. My coaching duties will end<lb />with the last snap of the Cincin-<lb />nati game.<lb />BakerTs resignation came<lb />amid a cloud of rumors and<lb />speculation on whether or not he<lb />would return as head coach next<lb />season, and if not, who his re-<lb />placement would be. ITve had a<lb />lot of questions, again rumor mill,<lb />if we had already interviewed<lb />people, we had already talked to<lb />people, Hart said. None of that<lb />is true. My personal opinion is<lb />that that would have been unethi-<lb />cal until such time that this an-<lb />nouncement was made.<lb />When asked when a new<lb />head coach would be named,<lb />HartTs only comment was, As<lb />soon as we possibly can. He did |<lb />add thata press conference would<lb />be called in the next weck to 10<lb />days to discuss the selection of a<lb />new coach, and that Chancellor<lb />Ruchard Eakin will name an advi-<lb />sory committe by mid-week toaid<lb />in the selection process.<lb />Hart did say, however, that<lb />Baker would not be leaving the<lb />University. He will stay on in the<lb />newly created position of Direc-<lb />tor of Personal Development for<lb />Student-Athletes. The qualities<lb />that Art Baker has exemplified<lb />during his tenure as head football<lb />coach, those are qualities any<lb />university would be proud to<lb />have in any person inits organiza-<lb />tion, Hart said. ThatTs why ITm<lb />elated that Art has accepted arole<lb />within our athletic program so<lb />that he can utilize his skills for the<lb />beiterment of our total program.<lb />Yhis (Director of Personal<lb />Development) has been a part of<lb />my personal 3-5 year plan for this<lb />athletic program. Quite honestly,<lb />I envisioned that being eighteen<lb />months away. Butas Artand Thad<lb />talked, particularly in the last<lb />couple of wecks, it is apparent<lb />that there isnTt anyone better<lb />suited, and all we have done js<lb />expidite that so that Art can serve<lb />in that capacity. When you have<lb />quality people who have skills<lb />that can help better your total<lb />program, you would be foolish<lb />not to try to keep those people<lb />on.<lb />When asked if he had asked<lb />for BakerTs resignation, Hart re-<lb />plied, No. This was not a forced<lb />issue. This was something that<lb />was done on a mutual basis in the<lb />best interests of the program. It<lb />was not a forced hand.<lb />Baker offered three reasons<lb />for his resigning at this time:<lb />1) So that my nine full-time<lb />assistant coaches can adequately<lb />pursue employment in our pro-<lb />fession. Dave has extended their<lb />contracts to assist in this area.<lb />2)To lift the cloud of rumors,<lb />speculations and other distrac-<lb />tions so that our coaches and play-<lb />ers might have the ~air clearedT for<lb />preparations for two important<lb />football games.<lb />3) To allow Dave the oppor-<lb />tunity to begin his search for a<lb />new coach.<lb />According to Baker, he has no<lb />regrets about any of his decisions<lb />over his four-year tenure. Treally<lb />donTt know of anything that |<lb />would do aifierently, he said. I<lb />do not recret any decision iTve<lb />made to make the moves we've<lb />made. I think that the direction<lb />that we took as fer as being realis-<lb />ticin our recruiting and the things<lb />we had in front of us and the type<lb />of offense and defense that we<lb />ran, I wouldn't go back and<lb />change them for anything.<lb />Football isa ercat profession<lb />and I have loved every year ITve<lb />spent in it, especially the years at<lb />ECU. East Carolina has a rich fu-<lb />ture in football. | hope that it will<lb />be remembered that Art Baker<lb />helped during a very difficult<lb />period of Pirate football to gct<lb />over a rough four years.<lb />On his new position, Baker<lb />said that I amappreciative of the<lb />Opportunity that Dave Hart is<lb />giving me to continue my em-<lb />ployment here at East Carolina.<lb />The job has a great concept. Llove<lb />working with young people and<lb />helping to make their lives more<lb />meaningful and worthwhile. The<lb />job will be a great challenge.<lb />During an emotional mo-<lb />ment, Baker thanked the people<lb />with whom he worked, and to his<lb />family, who he said had been<lb />supportive of him and the pro-<lb />gram. And finally, To the creat<lb />Pirate fans and students who<lb />have understood what we have<lb />worked so hard at doing and<lb />supported us, ] wish to express<lb />my heart-felt thariks.<lb />November Newsline /367<lb /></p>

Recently<lb />~ECU was recognized nationwide<lb />for having the fourth highest per-<lb />centage of its medical school<lb />graduates planning to practice<lb />family medicine.<lb />I hope what I can share with<lb />you, Jones said, isa prescription<lb />for life which has served me well<lb />as a family doctor, a country doc-<lb />tor in eastern North Carolina if<lb />you will an educator and a native<lb />American who dared to believe<lb />that the American Dream was<lb />true. ,<lb />Jones said that prescription<lb />was a need to talk about values. he<lb />said these values have fallen into<lb />disrepute and that there is now a<lb />crying out for a return to a hap-<lb />pier ethos where decency pre-<lb />vailed and ethics were held<lb />sacred.<lb />Young men and women<lb />such as yourselves can do so<lb />much to restore these values to a<lb />central place in our society, he<lb />said.<lb />Saying, The more we know<lb />of the truth the greater the chance<lb />to live life in harmony, Jones told<lb />the students and a packed crowd<lb />of parents and well-wishers at<lb />Minges Coliseum that truth lies in<lb />knowledge and that the students<lb />had taken the first steps toward<lb />discovering the truth by attend-<lb />ing college.<lb />Without faith there is no<lb />incentive to test the boundary of<lb />what you are, or more impor-<lb />tantly what you might become,<lb />he said.<lb />Without faith Neil Arm-<lb />strong would never have walked<lb />on the moon, the Wright Brothers<lb />would never have flown the first<lb />ariplane, Dr. Martin Luther King<lb />Jr. would never have participated<lb />in the great freedom march. Faith<lb />has the power to lift men and<lb />women to greatness.<lb />Jones said faith led to the<lb />third value he espoused, courage.<lb />a ee a<lb />he second fall graduation ceremony took place in Minges Coliseum with an estimated 1,300 students |<lb />waduating and turning their tassles. (Photo by Thomas Walters, ECU Photo Lab)<lb />CU graduates 1,300 students<lb />He told students to have the cour-<lb />age to seek the truth and to keep<lb />the faith.<lb />Noting there are two types of<lb />courage,physical and intellectual,<lb />Jones said intellectual courage<lb />was Often the most important and<lb />most difficult to achieve.<lb />I believe itTs that kind of<lb />courage this great university has<lb />instilled in each of you: the cour-<lb />age to stand up for what you be-<lb />lieve: the courage to fight for<lb />right; the courage to strike out at<lb />oppression wherever you find it,<lb />and, yes, the courage to become<lb />what you're capable of becom-<lb />ing, he said.<lb />The ceremonies began at 10<lb />a.m. as students seeking<lb />bachelorTs and masterTs degrees<lb />followed mace brearer Beatrice A.<lb />Chauncey, members of the Uni-<lb />versity of North Carolina Board of<lb />Governors, the ECU Board of<lb />Trustees and university faculty<lb />members into the coliseum to the<lb />traditional music of Pomp and<lb />Circumstance.<lb />The Rev. <lb />370/January Newsline<lb />ences ask<lb />By DAVID HERRING<lb />Staff Writer<lb />A Jetter signed by the chair-<lb />men of the departments of Biol-<lb />osy, Chemistry, Geology and<lb />Physics, urging that the four basic<lb />sciences be split from the College<lb />of Arts and Sciences and form a<lb />separate College of Sciences was<lb />send to Vice-Chancellor William<lb />A. Bloodworth in accordance<lb />with the recent Strategic Plan-<lb />ning.<lb />The concept of a College of<lb />science and Technology is also<lb />put ge at<lb />cnor,<lb />wort ra<lb />being considered in which the<lb />four basic sciences would be<lb />joined by the Department of<lb />Mathematics and the School of<lb />Industrial Technology to form a<lb />College of Science and Technol-<lb />Ory.<lb />According to Dr. Charles E.<lb />Bland, chairman of the Biology<lb />Dept., ThereTs a national recog-<lb />nition that the world is becoming<lb />more technical. We thought the<lb />proposal was timely with interna-<lb />tional trends and with the Strate-<lb />gic Planning process instituted by<lb />Chancellor Eakin.<lb />In support of this concept,<lb />Bland wrote to 100 schools that<lb />have units similar to the one being<lb />proposed, having switched from<lb />a College of Arts and Sciences,<lb />from which he got back more than<lb />30 letters, all but one of which said<lb />the respective schools function<lb />much better and got more accom-<lb />plished as a separate college.<lb />They are now able to do more<lb />research, are more successful at<lb />obtaining grant funds, and have<lb />more cooperation between de-<lb />partments, stated Bland.<lb />They only cautioned the<lb />possibility of narrowing studentTs<lb />education, but at ECU this is not<lb />possible because of the gencral<lb />college requirements. Some even<lb />called a College of Arts and Sci-<lb />ences an ~anachronismT and<lb />thought a college of our size had<lb />so many faculty and departments<lb />that it would be difficuit to man-<lb />age and give adequate represen-<lb />tation to all departments.<lb />Dr. Bland added, The liberal<lb />arts coliege was based upon the<lb />idea of educating a renaissance<lb />person and, except under certain<lb />circumstances, that kind of educa-<lb />tion isnTt appropriate in todayTs<lb />world.<lb />But Dr. Eugene E. Ryan, dean<lb />of the College of Arts and Sci-<lb />ences, disagrees.:<lb />The professional programs<lb />are important, but for ECU to<lb />have a College of Arts and Sci-<lb />ences shows that the university<lb />gives priority to the study of the<lb />basic liberal arts. The liberal arts<lb />give a well-rounded education<lb />which is more exclusively profes-<lb />sional. Most people change ca-<lb />for split from College of Arts<lb />reers 2 or3 times and a broad base<lb />prepares themiercareer opportu-<lb />nities, he said.<lb />Ryan ecknowlecged, how-<lb />ever, that we should continually<lb />look at the ECU system to see if it<lb />can be improved and that a deci-<lb />sion will be made by the General<lb />Administration basea cnarecom-<lb />mendation by Chancellor Richard<lb />Eakin. .<lb />Vice Chancellor Bloodworth<lb />Stated, If this is something that<lb />would genuinely benefit the uni-<lb />versity then we want to do it, but<lb />See SPLIT, page 3<lb />By STEPHANIE FOLSOM<lb />Staff Writer<lb />Former Chancellor Leo War-<lb />ren Jenkins, the leader in the de-<lb />velopment of ECU and the region.<lb />of eastern North Carolina, died<lb />Saturday night at Pitt Memorial<lb />Hospital of cancer.<lb />Jenkins came to ECU in 1947<lb />as Dean of East Carolina College<lb />and retired as chancellor in 1978<lb />after many major accomplish-<lb />ments, including the establish-<lb />ment of a fully accredited four-<lb />year medical school, the attaining<lb />of university status in 1967, and<lb />the consolidation into the Univer-<lb />sity of North Carolina system in<lb />1972.<lb />In his final commencement<lb />speech in 1978, to a class 16 times<lb />larger than the class he first deliv-<lb />ered a commencement speech to<lb />in 1947, Jenkins said, Thespiritin<lb />which this university has<lb />yn Wh habe<lb />ex } rat<lb />\k accO an<lb />\<lb />sch \<lb />wi ine |<lb />Cc e<lb />c chait<lb />prkcso"<lb />operated is based on a two-way<lb />street of communication with the<lb />people ... this has paid great divi-<lb />dends.
