I donTt think, he said,<lb />othere is another spot on earth<lb />where such abominable treatment,<lb /><lb />such fiendish cruelty, is inflicted on<lb /><lb />the laborer as in the sulphur mines<lb />pf Sicily. They are paid barely<lb />enough to provitte-themselves with<lb />a scant supply of the coarsest,<lb />cheapest foodpand a good portion of<lb />the time they are in a state of<lb />chronic starvation. When I was<lb />last there, many of the mines were<lb />closed, and a Sicilian paper stated<lb />that 30,000 people were starving at<lb />the mines. The work is of the hard-<lb />est and most exhausting character.<lb />Very féw of the mines have hoisting<lb />apparatus, and the sulphur ore (sul-<lb />phur and limestone combined) is<lb />brought up from the depths below<lb />on the backs of men and boys.<lb />Long, sloping, narrow tunnels lead<lb />from the surface down to the sul-<lb />phur beds 200 to 600 feet or more<lb />below. Miners dig the stuff out,<lb />and it is carried up in stout sacks or<lb />flat baskets. Many of the laborers,<lb />especially the boys, work naked.<lb />On their backs they wear a piece of<lb />matting, or something of the sort,<lb />held by a string around the neck.<lb />This is to protect the flesh from be-<lb />ing torn from their bodies by the<lb />jagged corners of the ore they carry.<lb />No one can imagine a more heart-<lb />rending sight than to see the wretch-<lb />ed creatures rolling up the long,<lb />steep slopes in the mine with their<lb />enormous loads. Every step they<lb />take wrings a groan from their tor-<lb />tured frames. Most pitiful to me<lb />was the sight of the poor, bent,<lb />broken and emaciated old men, mere<lb />battered. wrecks, and the young lads<lb />of 10 and 12 years who have just<lb />begun this life of cruel toil.<lb /><lb />oStaggering along under loads<lb />full as heavy as a strong man<lb />ought to carry, the dreadful proces-<lb />sion winds upward through the nar-<lb />row drifts and tunnels to the sur-<lb />face, where the ore is piled up in<lb />rectangular heaps and paid for by<lb />the cubic meter.<lb /><lb />~* As evidence of the awful severity<lb />of the labor is the fact that a very<lb />large percentage of these lads are so<lb />badly crippled by the time they<lb />reach the age for military service<lb />that the conscript officers are forced<lb />to reject them, and I assure you<lb />that the Itali: angSov ernment is not<lb />overcritical as to the physical con-<lb />dition of the men she sends by the<lb />shipload to Massana to be butch-<lb />ered by the Abyssinians. When the<lb />miserable creatures leave the in-<lb />ferno underground, and reach the<lb />surface, they find themselves ina<lb />veritable corner of hades. The sul-<lb />eee is extracted at the mine by<lb />roasting it in immense heaps slight-<lb />ly covered with earth, not unlike in<lb />form to acharcoal pit. The air is<lb />so filled with sulphurous vapors and<lb />dust astoalmost suffocateone, Not<lb />a green thing is in ~sight, for tho<lb />poisonous vapors kill all vegetation.<lb />The fierce sun beats down upon one<lb />in those verdureless valleys with<lb />great fury. On every side there are<lb />the hot rooks, acres of impalpable,<lb />stifling dust, and the vapors from<lb />the calcining can only be compared<lb />to blasts from the infernal region.<lb /><lb />_ The Pyramidal Blunders.<lb /><lb />Why do we make such pyramidal<lb />blunders?) The pyramids of the<lb />sun and moon are near the little<lb />city of San Juan Teotihuacan, on thp<lb />line of the Mexican railway. From<lb />the evidences that are still to be<lb />found about these ancient monu-<lb />ments they once stood in the midst<lb />of an extensive city extending at<lb />least several miles from them in ev-<lb />ery direction. Yiewed from the<lb />railroad, the pyramids do not ap-<lb />pear very formidable because tho<lb />eye compares their height with that<lb />of the small mountain, Cerro Gordo,<lb />near by. Janvier gives the follow-<lb />ing detailed information about theso<lb />evidences of a prehistoric civiliza-<lb />tion: The pyramid cf the sun, ac-<lb />cording to the very careful meas-<lb />urements of Sénor Garcia Cuhas, is<lb />216 feet 8 inches high, with a base<lb />761 feet by 721 feet 7 inches square,<lb />The platform on the top is 59 feet<lb />from north to south by 105 feet<lb />from ease to west. The pyramid of<lb />the moon is 150 feet 11 inches high,<lb />with a base 511 feet by 426 feet 5<lb />inches and a crowning platform 19<lb />feet 8 inches square. The only en-<lb />trance as yet discovered is found on<lb />the southern face of the pyramid of<lb />the moon at a height of 65 feet from<lb />the ground. This gives inlet to a<lb />narrow descending gallery, inter-<lb />rupted by a deep, square well, the<lb />walls of which are laid up with<lb />carefully squared stone.<lb /><lb />Tho axis of this gallery (observa-<lb />tion of Senor Garcia Cubas) coin-<lb />cides exactly with the magnetic<lb />meridian. Beyond the gallery the<lb />interior remains unexplored. The<lb />pyramid of the sun has not been en-<lb />tered. at all. To the south of the<lb />pyramid of the sun is a large earth-<lb />work known as the ciudadela (cita-<lb />del), a square inclosed by a mound<lb />averaging 262 feet thick by 32 feet<lb />high. In the center of the inclosed<lb />square is a small pyramid, and upon<lb />the inclosing earthworks are 14<lb />small pyramids disposed at regular | ~<lb />intervals. Inthe neighborhood of<lb />the pyramids are great numbers of<lb />tumbuli, isolated and grouped. ~The<lb />most notable group of tumuliis that<lb />which borders the so called calle de<lb />los muertes (the street of the dead).<lb />This curious causeway begins near<lb />the citadel and, passing the west-<lb />ern face of the pyramid of the sun,<lb />ends at the southern front of the<lb />pyramid of the moon, there widen-<lb />ing out into a large circle, in the<lb />center of whichisatumulus. Many<lb />of the tumuli have been opened, dis-<lb />closing in somo cases boxes of<lb />wrought stone inclosing a skull and<lb />ornaments of obsidian and pottery<lb />In other cases (in the tumuli al<lb />the sides of the streets of the dead)<lb />only empty chambers have been<lb />found. The conclusion arrived at<lb />by Senor Orazooy Berra in regard<lb />to these very curious remains,<lb />me nly based upon the wide diver-<lb />ger cofrom any known types of the<lb />clay masks found in what may be<lb />asst-ned to be the older of the<lb />tom 4, is that they are the work of<lb />ar:.e older than either Toltecs or<lb />Acolhuas, of which only these mon-<lb />uments now remain."Modern Mex-<lb />ico.<lb /><lb />Tithes In English History.<lb /><lb />Tithes were not uncommon among<lb />the Jews, but they wero chiefly con-<lb />fined to a tenth part of the spoil<lb />taken fromtheenemy. Bishop Bar-<lb />low, Seldon and others have observ-<lb />ed that neither tithes nor. ecclesias-<lb />tical benefices were ever heard of in<lb />the Christian church or pretended<lb />to be due to the Christian priest-<lb />hood, and, as that bishop observes,<lb />no mention is made of tithes in the<lb />grand codex of Ganons ending in<lb />Seldon contends that<lb />tithes were not introduced into Eng-<lb />land until the end of the eighth cen-<lb />tury"that is, about the year 786.<lb />About the year 794 Offa, king of<lb />Mercia, gave unto the church the<lb />tithes of all the kingdom (Mercia)<lb />to expiate for the death of Ethel-<lb />bert, king of the East Angles, whom<lb />in the year preceding he caused to<lb />be murdered. This was one way of<lb />endeavoring to appease the wrath<lb />of God. ~Tithes were before paid in<lb />England by way of offerings, and<lb />about 60 years after OffaTs .estab-<lb />lishment Ethelwolf enlarged it for<lb />the whole kingdom. Charlemagne<lb />established the payment of tithes in<lb />France in 778 and made the famous<lb />division of them into four parts, one<lb />to maintain the edifice of the church,<lb />the second to support the poor, the<lb />third to the bishops and the fourth<lb /><lb />to the parochial clergy..New York |.<lb /><lb />Ledger<lb /><lb />Boo oe 8<lb /><lb />oe<lb /><lb />ahah What Is It ?<lb /><lb />o== It is a picture ot tae celebrated 7<lb /><lb />PRKER.FOUNTAN PAS<lb /><lb />Best in use The outfit ot no business man is<lb />complete without one.<lb /><lb />The Reflector Book Store<lb /><lb />&<lb /><lb />has a nice assortment ot those Fountain Pens<lb />also a beautiful line of Pearl Handle Gold Pens<lb />You will be astonished when you ~see them and<lb />varn how very cheap they are.<lb /><lb />\<lb />o<lb /><lb />You'may never,<lb />But should you ever}@=="<lb /><lb />Want Job Printing<lb /><lb /> ""~Zz- Come to see us. ea"<lb /><lb />PERPLP ARMINIA TL lel Nel Nl es Ne NN ag ENE el PL i Oy<lb /><lb />og AO ROO RO AAA AA AABARA AA - BABAAAAA AA<lb /><lb />Al ar dob Print wy Of Mies |<lb /><lb />SAM AMNNN NNN MW WINN<lb /><lb />Anything from a3@=-=-<lb /><lb />ey eos<lb />s Gyan? y<lb /><lb />Go URS | «<lb /><lb />TO<lb /><lb />~ TRU Breoart oster.<lb /><lb />Ly<lb /><lb />The Daily Reflector<lb /><lb />Gives the home news<lb />every afternoon at the<lb />small price of 25 cents a<lb />month, Are you a sub-<lb />scriber?
