The door<lb />sv@ings on its hinges and the men<lb />disappear. They turn to the left in<lb />the dark passageway, and a second<lb />turn in the same direcfion brings<lb />them into the little room outside the<lb />telegraph office, in which are dis-<lb />played as soon as received the slips<lb />from the various police stations and<lb />fire headquarters, announcing in<lb />skeleton form the news of the night.<lb /><lb />The men care nothing about the<lb />brief announcements of murders,<lb />suicides, thefts and the other evi-<lb />dences of criminology. What they<lb />are.after are the slips which describe<lb />the fires of the night. They are fire<lb />~adjusters, these early visitors, and<lb />it isa unique business which they<lb />have fostered and developed. They<lb /><lb />are not attached to any insurance<lb />company, yet by years of close at-<lb />tention to businezs they are recog-<lb />nized as experts, and as such are<lb />called frequently into court to testi-<lb />fy in arson trials.<lb /><lb />Who originated the business no-<lb />body seems to know, but there is a<lb />tradition to the eftect that more than<lb />a generation ago a man whose home<lb />had been damaged by fire had some<lb />difficulty in collecting his insurance.<lb />He was quick to recognize the plight<lb />of others placed ina similar predica-<lb />ment, and, being aggressive, he de-<lb />termined to act as an intermediary<lb />in the matter of settling fire losses,<lb />depending ona percentage fee for<lb />his trouble.<lb /><lb />~Other men entered the field from)<lb /><lb />time to time. At this time more<lb />than a score of shrewd, observant<lb />men are engaged in adjusting fire<lb />losses. They do not like to describe<lb />their methods. The field is limited<lb />even for a city as large as New<lb />York, and if more men should en-<lb />gage in the bysiness the receipts<lb />would be less for each individual.<lb />In brief, however, they go about<lb />their work much in the following<lb />ananner: The round up of a night<lb />may be a dozen fires. Each shp<lb />gtates the number of thealarm box,<lb />when received, cause of the fire, if<lb /><lb />sured. The men divide the work of<lb />the morning as best they can. By ?<lb />oTclock the little band has scattered,<lb />but later other adjusters arrive and<lb />take up the claims as fast as they<lb />are recorded.<lb /><lb />It is a notable fact that many per- |<lb /><lb />sons who sufter losses by fire, es-<lb /><lb />pecially in the lower east side of<lb />town, exaggerate the damage done |<lb /><lb />almost invariably, but the fire ad-<lb />juster, with his years of training to<lb />guide him, is quick to maie an im-<lb />partial appraisement. Arrived at<lb />the scene of the fire, he soon learns<lb />the names of the persons insured<lb />and the titles of the companies in-<lb />suring them, He explains the object<lb />of his visit, and the insured, being<lb />anxious to have the loss settled as<lb />speedily as possible, is only too will-<lb />ing to consent to pay the adjusierTs<lb />fee, The companies, too, are ready<lb />to accept the appralsement, knowing<lb />from experience that the adjusters<lb />are experts in their business-and<lb />Wiil see that justice Is duue to the<lb />several contracting parties.<lb />Asarule the adjusters preter to<lb />pass upon the dumuge uone by iurge<lb />fires. ~Lhe smmail oues are tov trou-<lb /><lb />Peasniy."New York Commercial<lb /><lb />ART OF GETTING oHUNG UP,<lb /><lb />leave Cliat6.10 a m, Dunbar 6.30 a m. : It Is Simple Enough to Get Credit if You<lb /><lb />acriye Latta 7.50 a m, daily except Sun<lb />day<lb /><lb />~<lb /><lb />Know How.<lb />He was a past master in the<lb />science ot getting trusted.
