Mention<lb /><lb />' this paper,<lb /><lb />|<lb /><lb />) eIRE UNCOVERED A GAME.<lb /><lb />Yhe Poker Players Ceased Onl<lb />Burning Rocf Fell In,<lb /><lb />A hitherto unchronicled incident<lb />of the old Pike Opera House fire, in<lb />1866, was told a few days ago bya<lb />man who at that time was a mem-<lb />ber of the fire department, and who<lb />still does service with the fire lad- ,<lb />dies. The incident was characteris. |<lb />tic of the times, for in those days,<lb />when the town was wide open and<lb />the stranger could get any old game<lb />at any old place if he had the roll,<lb />the fact that a fire, even of the mag-<lb />nitude of that famous blaze, was not<lb />sufficient to interrupt a seductive<lb />game of draw caused no surprise.<lb /><lb />The like of that Pike fire will<lb />probably never occur, for, with the<lb />poor facilities with which the fire-<lb />men were then equipped and the<lb />element of danger which marked<lb />their every step, it-has always been<lb />regarded as a miracle that no life<lb />was sacrificed in the conquering of<lb />that famous blaze.<lb /><lb />The night was well spent and the<lb />efforts of the firemen had been so<lb />far successful as to practically get<lb />the flames under control when it<lb />~was discovered that the fire had<lb />made its way into the building in<lb />the rear, which faced on Baker<lb />street. Now, this structure was<lb />frame and bore the name of shel-<lb /><lb />When the<lb /><lb />most talked of games of poker<lb />which this town then had in plenty.<lb /><lb />All through the night lights had<lb />blazed brightly from within the<lb />place, and the rooms were filled<lb />with its habitues, though at times<lb />it seemed as if the heat and the<lb />proximity of the blaze would com-<lb />pel them to vacate, That this was<lb />not the case was proved by the fire-<lb />men a few moments after it was ob-<lb />served that the structure was on<lb />fire.<lb /><lb />A half dozen members of the old<lb />hooks No. 2 were sent to the roof<lb />with buckets with which to stay the<lb />progress of the fire. When they<lb />reached the scene of their new la-<lb />bors, the roof had been burned<lb />through in several places and a clear<lb />view of the interior of the upper<lb />room was to be had.<lb /><lb />When ~the first man _ looked<lb />through, he stopped in amazement<lb />Kand thenT called his companions to<lb />his side. They looked and saw a<lb />sight that so filled them with sur-<lb />prise that the fire burned unmolest-<lb />ed for several minutes. There,<lb />gathered around a small oak table,<lb />were four men, their faces showing<lb />no traces of fear, even as the fire-<lb />| brands dropped one by one through<lb />the burning roof to the floor below,<lb />and the cards were dealt once while<lb />the firemen watched the strange<lb />sight. |<lb /><lb />[he crackling of the flames<lb />brought the firemen to their senses,<lb />and they sprang to their work, and<lb />even as they did soa portion of the<lb />roof fell with a resounding crash.<lb />Carefully they made their way ovei<lb />the charred timbers to the spo<lb />where they had watched the game<lb />but the room was now vacant except<lb />for acolored man who seemed tov<lb />much frightened to gather up the<lb />money which lay in profusion about<lb />the floor and table. The firemen<lb />clambered through the roof and<lb />helped the colored man gather uj)<lb />the bills, and then they worked or<lb />until the great Pike fire was tappe)<lb />out.<lb /><lb />For many a day in the engin<lb />houses that scene was the topic ¢<lb />much conversation, and to this du<lb />itis talked about by the men w!<lb />witnessed itand told totbeir friend<lb />who still recount it. The<lb />real fact is that the Japs do nothing;<lb />they only half do it, and therein<lb />lies the cause of their failure.<lb /><lb />The Jap thinks of nothing but the<lb />present; of what he can make now,<lb />and how, by making his commodi-<lb />ties a little inferior, he can adda<lb />few more cents to his profit. If he<lb />has to pay more for his labor, the<lb />idea of economy, or the boid declara-<lb />tion that he can no longer sell at<lb />the original price, never strikes<lb />him, but he extends the whole of<lb />his ingenuity in trying to diminish<lb />the quality without any loss in the<lb />appearance. There is no such thing<lb />as standard quality. You are never<lb />eure of getting the quality you are<lb />asked to pay for. So much is this<lb />so in Japan that a manseldom buys<lb />an article without unwrapping and<lb />examining it on the spot. The cor-<lb />respondent continues: "<lb /><lb />oThe Japanese mind is so small<lb />that it is difficult to weigh it with<lb />American scales"in fact, it may be<lb />said that it is made upof trifles, and<lb />itis the attention"the labored at-<lb />tention"the Jap gives to these tri-<lb />fles which makes him incapable of<lb />ever becoming anything more than<lb />a& unit in whatever be may be<lb />concerned. As an illustration of<lb />what I mean, I will give examples<lb />which are of daily occurrence. You<lb />want to buy an article, and you ask<lb />how much it is. The answer is, say,<lb />1 cent. Then you ask how much the<lb />articles are by the dozen, fully e.-<lb />pecting that you will get them for<lb />10 cents. You are nota littleamazed<lb />when the merchant tells you 13<lb />cents the dozen. You get mad, call<lb />the mana fool, and insist that you<lb />ought to get a reduction by taking<lb />a quantity. Not so with the Jap;<lb />that is not his way of doing busi-<lb />ness. If you take one, he reasons<lb />that is 1 cent, but if you take a<lb />dozen he will have to count them,<lb />and then it will be 138 cents.<lb /><lb />oTt is thesame with the manufac-<lb />turer. You give him an order for<lb />100 of a kind, and then wish to<lb />make it 1,000. Immediately he de-<lb />mands an advance in the price.<lb />Should he, however, reluctantly<lb />agree to take the increased order at<lb />the original price, you will proba-<lb />bly get the first hundred articles<lb />fairly up to sample, but as the de-<lb />livery goes on the quality is sure to<lb />fall off. And this smallness is not<lb />confined to small people. It per-<lb />meates the whole country, and one<lb />of the leading banks advertises that<lb />it allows 4.385 per cent interest on<lb />current accounts and 5.115 per cent<lb />on savings bank deposits.
