Uemocracy<lb />is for allthe people. The recent<lb />utterances of the people are plain<lb />and decided. ~They have ex-<lb />pressed their faith in the Chicago<lb />platform, their belief in bimetal-<lb />ism, their disgust a-d disappro-<lb />wai of Republican creeds and<lb />practices, and, above ail, their<lb />hatred of the tyrannous gold<lb />standard. They show that they<lb />will no longer submit to the<lb />robbery of trusts, the domination<lb />of bosses and the oppression of<lb />the money rrwer. The con-<lb />demnation of the hypocricy, and<lb /><lb />falsehood of the Republican<lb />party is crushing.<lb />oIt is equally pronounced,<lb /><lb />whether we hear it, loud and free,<lb />in the wheat fields of Ohio and<lb />Tows, or struggling for utterence<lb />in the wealth congested centre of<lb />oGreater New York where the<lb />candidate for mayor received<lb />$0,000 plurality"a candidate<lb />whose only campaign utterance<lb />was: oTam a Democrat; who<lb />wus heart and soul for the Chi-<lb />eago platform and the candidates:<lb />who stood on it.<lb /><lb />oNo less significant is the fact<lb />thatthe people of the State of<lb />New York have elected by 70,000<lb />majority as chief justice of the<lb />Court of Appeals, a statesman<lb />Who sought support by announce<lb />ing that he ~had yoted for Hon,<lb />Ww. There<lb />isnow no room for Republican<lb />dodging.<lb /><lb />oWe reaffirm our belief in the<lb />principles of the Chicago and<lb />State platforms cf the Democrat-<lb />it party, as adopted in 1896, in<lb />their entirety; and we will still<lb />support those principles until<lb />they are written in our laws.<lb /><lb />j r | :<lb /><lb />) Republicans<lb /><lb />oWe would be untrue to the<lb />firm and. loyal allegiance the<lb />Dewocratic party of North Caro-<lb />lina bears to our greatest leader,<lb />Hon. William J. Bryan, if we<lb />failed to express our confidence.<lb />in bis honor and integrity and in<lb /><lb />the welfare of allthe people. We<lb />emphasize the fact that our great<lb />victory was won 10 the: States of<lb />Qhio and Kentucky, where he<lb />personally appealed to the peo-<lb />ple. ae<lb />oWe view with alarm the de-<lb />preased condition of trade and<lb />the low prices of all products<lb />raised by our people, but we<lb />remind those who heard Repub-<lb />lican orators in 1896 predict dire<lb />disaster if the Democrats were<lb />elected, that McKinley is presi-<lb />dent of these United States and<lb />both branches of Congress are<lb />Repnblican. The people are<lb />swift to draw the proper conclu-<lb />sions.<lb />oWe think all patrictic citizens<lb />who joined with us last year in<lb />carrying the State for our presi-<lb />cential candidate, and we invite<lb />to the future councils of the<lb />Demccratic party"the party of<lb />the people"all men who believe<lb />in its principles, desire its su-<lb />premacy, and who will assist in<lb />carrving out its policies.<lb />oIn less than one year oppor-<lb />tunity will be given the voters to<lb />express a firm adherence to those<lb />principles.
