According to current gos:ip,<lb />Senator Foraker will lead a fight on<lb />Mr. McKinley in his own State, and<lb />the anti-Platt Republicans in New<lb />oYork will use the oCitizenTs Uaion<lb />erganization, which has been mude<lb />permanent, to down Platt and prevent<lb />his carrying out the deal to give Mr.<lb />McKinley the solid vote of New<lb />oYork in the Republican Natiznal Con-<lb />vention of 1900, While these move"<lb />ments may not be airectly in the in-<lb />terest of Czar Reed, as some say they<lb />are, he i3 likely to occupy the best<lb />position tor being benefitted by them,<lb />if they succeed, as his friends are)<lb />Known to be at work in New England<lb />~and elsewhere, to keep the following<lb />he had Jast year together, and to add<lb />to it. Platt and Hanna, in addition to<lb />the enemies he has made in the distri<lb />bution of pie, will be a heavy load fer<lb />Mr the<lb />chances will certainly be against his<lb />getting nominated again.<lb />Democrets are inclined to poke fun<lb /><lb />McKinley to carry, and<lb /><lb />at Sena~or Lindsay, of Ky., and to<lb />accuss him of having beenvasleep for a<lb />few months, owing to his having re<lb />turned to Washington singing the same<lb />od Cleve and-Carl'sle song about the<lb />only currency le zislation needed being<lb />that which will retire the greenbacks.<lb />Most advocates of the retirement of<lb />the greenbacks other<lb />sort of currency in their place, but Mr.<lb /><lb />Lindsay would have the greenbacks<lb /><lb />propese some<lb /><lb />~retired as fast as they are presented at<lb />the Treasury, and nothing issued in<lb />in their -pleces. In other words, he<lb />believes, or thinks that he belieyes that<lb />the people could prosper under a syze<lb />tein ot enforced contraction of the cure<lb />rency that, is already less in velume<lb />than the country needs. However,<lb />there are not a sufticient number ot<lb /><lb />sharers in (hat belief to cause any<lb /><lb />udeasincess, | ,<lb /><lb />Representative Gaines, of Tennessee,<lb />has a letter written to him by Hon, W.<lb />J: Bryan in reply to an inquiry as to<lb />the truthfulness of a newspaper state~<lb />Jment that Mr, Bryan had decided to<lb />retire from politics. ~The letter says:<lb />oThe newspape item is not true. I<lb />expect to remain inT politics all my<lb />fe. He says the party ois in a<lb />healthier condition than it has been for<lb />somerime, and that there is a greater<lb />desire for harmony prevailing inside<lb />the party. He expressed the opinion<lb />that by 1900, all friction and feuds<lb />within the party will have vanished,<lb />and that in the national election of<lb />that year, the Democratic party will<lb />triumph. Mr Sorg declined to express<lb />any cpinion for publication about the<lb />Hanna-Foraker scrap in Ohio,<lb />although it was inferred from his<lb />manuer that he theught Hanna would<lb />win, That is the prevailing opinion<lb />among Ohio Democrats in Washington.<lb />They also believe that HannaTs success<lb />will sound the death knell of Repubdli-<lb />can rule in Ohio.<lb /><lb />~Representative Hepburn, of lowa,<lb />has let the Republican fivancial cat out<lb />of the bag and shown why the Repub-<lb />licans would not dere, even if they<lb />controlled both branches of Congress,<lb />to put Secretery GageTs ideas into a<lb />statute, by saying naively, in a pub<lb />lished interview: ohy if we should<lb />pass a law on those lines at this session<lb />of Congress, Iowa would not return a<lb />singie Republican Congressman next<lb />tal] and the Republicans would Icse a<lb />Senator ~rom that State. Mr. Hep-<lb />burnTs confession may not have been<lb />politic from a Republican point of view,<lb />but is is true, and there are feur or five<lb />other States in whith the Republicans<lb />would fare no better than in Lowa.<lb />The administration has got to make a<lb />bluff at trying to get gold standard<lb />legislation from Congress, in order to<lb /><lb />Keep campaign promises, but that is as<lb /><lb />circumstances,<lb /><lb />B. It wouid,<lb />at Jeast, not touch the sensibili~<lb />ties of gentlefolk. Butit is not<lb />so confined.
