MURDOCH.<lb /><lb />DOLL CAUSED HER DOWNFALL.<lb /><lb />Eight-Year-Old Girl Arrested for<lb />Stealing a Waxen Belle.<lb />(By Anglo-American Press.)<lb />MANCHESTER, Eng., Nov. 1.<lb /><lb />There was something very human in<lb />a charge of stealing a doll preferred<lb />against a child at Brighton police court<lb />Yesterday. The small occupant of the<lb />lock was only 8 years old, and her<lb />name was Rose Coleby.<lb /><lb />When passing a toy shop the other<lb />day Rose espied a doll displayed out-<lb />side the fancy bazar in a manner most<lb />attractive.<lb /><lb />The childTs weakness. for dolls was<lb />not proof against the sudden tempta-<lb />tion. She passed and repassed, and<lb />still returned to feast her eyes on the<lb />waxen beauty, and, at last, unable to<lb />resist any longer, she snatched it up<lb />and fled. -<lb /><lb />The shopman, however, was on the<lb />alert, and Rose and the doll were soon<lb />parted.<lb /><lb />The case aroused considerable curi-<lb />osity and amusement at the local court,<lb />but matters took a more serious turn<lb />when it was intimated that there was<lb />another charge against Rose of pur-<lb /><lb />loining a watch. On that account theT<lb /><lb />child was remanded for further inqui-<lb />ries.<lb /><lb />Fighting Consumption.<lb /><lb />Consumption or tuberculosis has<lb />been the subject of early and more<lb />yicorous efforts to check its trans-<lb />mission in Prussia shan elsewhere, as<lb />Is natural considering that Dr. Koch<lb />is a Berlin professor. The result is<lb />that while from 1875 ta 1887, before<lb />his discovery, the deaths from tw<lb />Sercle er consumption were $1 in<lb />10,000, since 1887 there has been a<lb />gradual decrease to 25 in 10,000.<lb />Elsewhere thig decrease has not<lb />tazen place. Prussian prisons and<lb />insane asylums show a reduction in<lb />their death rate from tuberculosis,<lb />since careful precautions were<lb />adopted. The death rate from this<lb />cause among religious nursing or<lb />ders was in 1881-2 114 per 10,000<lb />In 1893-4 it had dropped to 67, al-<lb />most haif. Facts like these show<lb />the absolute necessity ofcareful pre<lb />cautions for destroying the sputa of<lb />ecusumptive patients. Rigorous<lb />rare in this direction would greatly<lb />decrease a disease to which a large<lb />proportion Of deaths are due<lb /><lb />a AANAWS SAAINA SANA A)<lb /><lb />9<lb />if<lb />x<lb /><lb />«a<lb /><lb />fc " PRACTICAL<lb />GO<lb /><lb />= TIN AND SHEET IRON<lb /><lb />aC WORKER.<lb /><lb />dO)<lb />a _ Offers, his services to the 3<lb />ae citizens of Greenville and the &<lb /><lb />{© public generally.<lb />ROOFING, GUTTERING,<lb />Spouting and Stove Work,<lb /><lb />G a specialty<lb />Satisfaction guaranteed or<lb />7 no charges made. ~Tobaeco<lb /><lb />© KF lues made in season.
