Whether by so doing he hurt<lb />or helped Hanna is as yet a matter of<lb />doubt. There was no querrel between<lb />Br McKirley and Senator Foraker,<lb />but there was plain talk on both sides.<lb />Mr. McKirley said he knew Foraker<lb />could stop the fight on Hanna that<lb />seme of his personal followers were<lb />showing a disposition to make, if not<lb />actually making, if he desired to do so.<lb />Mr. Foraker did not deny his power<lb />to do so, but retorted by saying that<lb />Banna had brought it all: on himsefl<lb />By his treatment of the Foraker and<lb />Bushnell Republicans, and intimating<lb />that he thought it would serv? him<lb />good and right if he failed to get elect-<lb />ed to the Senate. Mr, McKinley did<lb />pot defend HannaTs methods 12 dealing<lb />with ForakerTs friends, but he made it<lb />very plain that the whole power of the<lb />administration would be used to secure<lb />HapnaTs election, and that it would be<lb />useless for any Republican who took<lb />any part in an attempt to prevent his<lb />election to expect the slightest fayor<lb />fron him in the way of patronage.<lb />Notwithstanding all this the most that]<lb />Mr. McKinley could get out of Fora-<lb />ker was a promise that Le would not<lb />personally do anything against the<lb />election of Hanna. Foraker is still<lb />in Washington and Mr. McKin'ey has<lb />not abandoned hope of being able to<lb />bring sufficient pressure to bear upon<lb />him to get him to agree to call his<lb />follows off and to allow Hanna to be<lb />elected,<lb /><lb />Secretary Gage now openly admits<lb />that he is in sympatay with the gold<lb />bug, self appointed monetary confer-<lb />ence which assumes the right to per-<lb />form the duties properly belonging to<lb />Congress in connection with financial<lb />legislation, and to emphasize that sym<lb />pathy he gave a dinner this week<lb />attended only by the members of the<lb />so-called conference and Mr. H. H.<lb />Banna, ot Indianapotis, who is gen-<lb />erally regarded as the creditor of the<lb />Indianapolis convention and of this<lb />conference. At this dinner the work<lb />of the conference, as far as it has gone,<lb />and the financial recommerdations in<lb />the annual report of Secretary Gage<lb />were discussed. If these men have<lb />time to waste they have as much rigit<lb />to waste itin this way as in anyT other.<lb />The only good purpose that will be<lb />gerved either by the recommendations<lb />of Secretary Gage or this conference,<lb />eomposed of his side partners, will be<lb />the increase in the silver sentiment ot<lb />the country. Senator Chandler has<lb />not always been wise in his predictions,<lb />bat he hits the nail square ov the head<lb />Gn his latest, made public this week"<lb />oif the Republican party permanently<lb />acquiesces in the existing gold stan-<lb />dard it will be defeated in the Con-<lb />gressional elections of 1898 and in the<lb /><lb />Presidential election ot 1900..<lb />on .. John Wedderburn and John Wed.<lb /><lb />about the most discredited political<lb />prophet of the day, was at the White<lb />House this week. His interview with<lb />Mr, McKinley may or may not have<lb />included Cuban affairs, but, when it is<lb />remembered how he shouted for tree<lb />Cuba during the last session of Con-<lb />gress, the following language used by<lb />him after be left the White House is<lb />considered significant: oI hope that<lb />Congress will not attempt to conduct<lb />our foreign relations. There was a<lb />time, perhaps, when @ resolution con-<lb />ferring belligerent rights upon the<lb />Cubans might Lave been passed without<lb />bringing on a war with Swain, but that<lb />time has gone.
