To send him<lb />~back to Africa is impossible, and if it<lb />were not impossible, it would be utter-<lb />ly impracticable. ~To colonize him in<lb />this country is also both impossible and<lb />practicable. Amalgamation is losing<lb />ground instead of gaining, which 1s<lb />vastly to the credit of our country.<lb />So the colored man is here to stay.<lb />We must take account of him, we must<lb />reckon on him,<lb /><lb />Since the gates of Eden closed on<lb />Adam and Eve no greater calamity has<lb />befallen a people than that which was<lb />thrust upon the stricken South by the<lb />act giving 1,000,000 slaves, sons of<lb />generations of slaves, the right of frans<lb />chise. From that day until now the<lb />course of the Southern people has been<lb />a desperate struggle up grade against<lb />odds that would have daunted a less<lb />yalliant race. Politically we are<lb />where we wera three decades ago. No<lb />reforms could be initiated, no advanced<lb />positions be taken, because every year<lb />and hour the slightest disaficction<lb />would throw 100,000 colored voters<lb />into ascendancy.
