By the admission<lb />ot Utah into the Union in 1896 the<lb />last of the important Territories was<lb />disposed of, and the last proposition<lb />seriously made for the creation of g<lb />new American State emanates from<lb />those who propose a sub-division of<lb />the State of Michigan, which was ad-|.<lb />mitted into the Union in 1837, into<lb />two States, by setting apart the<lb />northern peninsula as the State of<lb />Superior. The proposal is to take the<lb />northern counties of Wisconsin and add<lb />them to the detatched portion of<lb />Michigan and include the city of Su-<lb />perior, near Duluth. The population<lb />ofthe new State would reach 500,000.<lb />The northern counties of the State of<lb />Wiscorsin, and particularly those that<lb />border on Lake Michigan, have de-<lb />cidedly more in common with that<lb />State than they have with the southern<lb />and prairie counties of Wisconsin,<lb /><lb />The divisional line between Michi<lb />gan ~and Wisconsin, between Green<lb />Bay and Lake Sunerior, is entirely<lb />artificial. The territory on the one<lb />side is practica.ly the same ag on the<lb />other ; the products are the same, the<lb />interests are the same and the means<lb />of communication with the outside<lb />world are idencicai. A considerable<lb /><lb />part of the population is of foreign<lb />birth, there being a large Swedish,<lb />Norwegian and Danish contingent and<lb />some Dutch. The state of Superior<lb />would be one of the richest parts of the<lb />country in woods and ores, and, it<lb />may. be, that with a separate State<lb />government its macrerial interests<lb />would be advanced more effectivery<lb />than under the present conditions,<lb />There are no political obstacles to the<lb />propoeed establishment of a torty-sixth<lb />State ot Superior, to be made up of<lb />the north peninsula of Michigan and<lb />some ot the northern counties of<lb />Wisconsin.
