First and most important is<lb />the improvement of our educa-<lb />tional faciliti-s. Thic mus: be<lb />done. The Stat«Ts stain: f illiter-<lb />acy must be wiped out. The<lb />(question then rarrows down to<lb />the perfecting of the public<lb />gcbools and iuducing a regular<lb />~attendance upon them. We do<lb />not advocate compu'sory educa-<lb />~tion. ~That is too undemocratic.<lb />But something must be done.<lb /><lb />9. Diversified industries, from<lb />farming to manufacturing. The<lb />~day has passed when we may<lb />expect to grow rich or even pros:<lb />perous alone ou our crops of<lb />~eotton and tobacco. Our climate<lb />is suitable for the cultivation of<lb />~nearly any product of the United<lb />~States. Attention must be direct:<lb />ed more to what is looked upon<lb />as small things, dairying. poaltry<lb />raising, various foods for beth<lb />man and beast, fruit frowing,<lb />trucking, «tc. The numerous<lb /><lb />through lines of railroads pierc-<lb />ing the State open up abundant<lb />markets for us, and thonsands of<lb />dollars will pour into the S*ate<lb />where now not onecones. Nota-<lb />ble examples of this are the won-<lb />derful development of the truck-<lb />ing and fruit-growing industry of<lb />the Eastern portion of the State<lb />in the past few years, where only<lb />a little stuff was made for the few<lb />home markets that have been<lb />pened up to the Nort Carolina<lb />farmers and fruit growers. It<lb />owould be interesting to know<lb />how many thousancs vf dollars<lb />were brought into the State this<lb />oyear by the -trawberry crop<lb />alone. Webave often heard the<lb />cry of odiversify, odiversify ;<lb />bat it is astern necessity. In man-<lb />ufacturing the chief cperations<lb />dre in cotton mills, of which there<lb />are a large number in the State,<lb />wany of them having paid hand-~-<lb />some profits until the hard times<lb />set in, since whea few have done<lb />much more than keep going.<lb /><lb />Profits will doubtless revive<lb />with the revival of business.<lb />Other manuiactures will be built<lb />ws the population grows more<lb />gustaining and opportunities of<lb />succossful invenstments arise.<lb /><lb />3. Road Making. This must<lb />be an important question in the<lb />Slate for at least the next quarter<lb />@acentury. We take it thatthe<lb />necessity and desirability of good<lb />roads are sslf evident. No ag-<lb />ricultural country can long re-<lb />: n the highest state of pros<lb />less the farmers have<lb />over which they can<lb />ickly andT cheaply carry<lb />is to market. Several<lb />interesting stories were told of<lb />him, but the following appears<lb />ia print for the first time:<lb /><lb />When he was editing 4 country<lb />newspaper a subscriber whom he<lb />had effended with criticism sent<lb />him a challenge for a fight with<lb />shotguns. :<lb /><lb />He told the bearer to bes-ated,<lb />when he asked him the prica of<lb />buckshot. :<lb /><lb />oThirty cents a pound, was the<lb />reply-<lb /><lb />oNow said Kit, owhat is power<lb />selling at?<lb /><lb />oSixty cents.<lb /><lb />Then he turned his pockets<lb />inside out"fished up a bunch of<lb />kevs and several due bills, looked<lb />them over thoughttully, then<lb />wrote this reply to his challenger:<lb /><lb />oDear Jim: Yours received.<lb />{[ wouid be glad to accommodate<lb />you, but your friend tells me that<lb />shot is thirty cents a pound and<lb />powcer sixty. | And I canTt invest<lb />that much money in ~em these<lb />hard times.
