Doubtless there are<lb />others also, but only two have<lb />bean selected to call attention to<lb />: atthis time. In many instances<lb />people may do this thoughtlessly<lb />and without regarding it at all as<lb />: an impos*tion, bat upon taking @<lb />, proper view cf the matter it can<lb />| be looked upon in no other<lb />light. We do not write about<lb />these matters ir any svirit of<lb />complaint or censure, but only<lb />from ths standpoint of justice<lb />and right, and we hope those who<lb />read it will take tbat view of it,<lb />- beating in mind the Golden Rule<lb />oDo unto others as ye would that<lb />they should do unto you.<lb /><lb />The first of these enterprises<lb />we will mention is the Telephore<lb />Exchange. The owners of this<lb /><lb />oGndustry haye at copsiderabie<lb />expenditure of time and money<lb />put in this exchanye- That it 18<lb />a great convenience to the busi-<lb />ness interests of the community:<lb />need not be avgued at all- The.<lb />only means the cwners have of<lb />reimbursing themselves or even<lb />making a per cent. on their 1n-<lb />-vestment is by renting their<lb />telephones to subscribere, who<lb />cheerfully pay a monthly rental<lb />for the benefitther receive. Now<lb />where the imposition comes 10 18<lb />that so many people »7ho are not<lb />osubscribers to the exchange, and<lb />who in no way contribute a pen.<lb />ny to maintain it, take the liberty<lb />of going into any store of office<lb />where there is a telephon @pud<lb /><lb />use it as much as they please. Is<lb />this right? Think a momnent<lb /><lb />- and you will admit that it is<lb />wrong, morally if not legally.<lb />Such a practice is taking advan-<lb />tage, without just compensation,<lb />of what the labor and means of<lb />aacther has provided, ard no<lb />map has a moral right to do this.<lb />The sense of pride, to say nothing<lb /><lb />of justice and right, should pre-<lb />vent people taking advantage = uf<lb /><lb />| others. And so it is @<lb />small thing, yet those who do it<lb /><lb />impose both on the publisher, by<lb />using the product of bis labor<lb />without compensatidn, and onthe<lb />purchaser or subscriber, by ap-<lb />propriating to ones own usd<lb />what another has purchased,<lb /><lb />The seme question may be asked<lb />here as in the telephone example:<lb />Is this right ?' Take a moment's<lb /><lb />| serious reflection ou the subject<lb /><lb />and you will answer vhat it is not<lb />right butisa meral wrong:<lb /><lb />To illustrate both thesc exam~<lb />ples, people have no more mural<lb />right to use a telephone without<lb />paying forit, orto use @ paper<lb />without paying for it,.than they<lb />have to go on 4 train 0% steamboat<lb />aod take a trip without paying<lb />fare, or than they have to get<lb />dinner at a hotel and not pay for<lb />it.<lb /><lb />As said at the outset this<lb />article 1s only written from the<lb />standpoint of justice and right,<lb />and in the hope that it will cause<lb />those to whow it applies to think<lb />impartially on these mattars; and<lb />help them to correct the moral<lb />wrong they are doing:<lb /><lb />If the labor of another ig worth<lb />using it13 entitled to ccmpensa-<lb />tion.<lb /><lb />LE<lb /><lb />At a convention of Colorado<lb />Democrats, held in Denver on<lb />the 6th, it was decided that here-<lb />after (here ehall be no more<lb />fusion by that patty with anv<lb />other.
