SaTuRDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1897.<lb /><lb />eeepee<lb /><lb />WASHINGT<lb /><lb />' (From our: Regular Correspondent. )<lb />oWASHINGTON, D. u., Sept 3, T97.<lb />It has always been considered<lb />the proper thing to make support<lb />of the National platform uf a po-<lb />litical varty the test of a manTs<lb />loyalty to his party. The plat-<lb />form 2dopted by 4 party ip<lb />Naticnal convention is the only<lb />authentic declaration of the prin-<lb />ciples of that party and 1ust be<lb />so considered until another<lb />National convention meets and<lb />adopts another platform. These<lb />facts are so self evident that<lb />wention of them seems almost<lb />unnecessary, yet cbjection is<lb />bsing raised because Democrats,<lb />are insisting that the platform<lb />adopted by the Chicago conven<lb />tion must be accepted as the<lb />privciples of the democratic<lb />party. To do anything else<lb />would be a radical departure<lb />from all nolitical precedents.<lb /><lb />There is a clash of authority in<lb />the Interior Department between<lb />Secretary Bliss and Indian Com-<lb />missioner Jones that may end in<lb />a big rowamong promuent Re-<lb />publican. Mr. JonesT present<lb />assistant is Mr. Thomas P. Smith,<lb />who is a Democratic holdover.<lb />Mr. Smith has made a tip top<lb />record and Mr. Jones would like<lb />bim to romain in bis office. In other<lb />words, the demand for American<lb />wheot is almost grater than the<lb />supply; hence tha big<lb />which the speculators are just<lb />now getting. Let the mints of<lb />the United States, &ngland,<lb />France and Germany be opeued<lb />tomorrow to silyer, and you<lb />would see the price of the white<lb />metal rise steadily until it reached<lb />ths levelTof gold. Why would it<lb />rise? Simply because of the<lb />demand"just the same. as de-<lb />mand has raised the price of<lb />wheat. Mr. Graffenreid ex-<lb />pressed hig opinion strongly of<lb />those who are constantly decry-<lb />ing the tour hundred willion<lb />standard silver dollars the coun-<lb />try now has, and ended an<lb />interesting chat by saying: ~The<lb />Only solulion of the question is<lb />to open the mints to silver the<lb />some as gold.
