C., August 5."<lb />Another blot of crime has failen<lb /><lb />upon Beaufort countyTs history.<lb />Tuesday afternoon one henry Jackson,<lb />a white man about 22 years old,<lb />attempted to commit rape upon Miss<lb />Blanche Hodges, deughter of Mr,<lb />James Hodges who resides at Old<lb />Ford, N. C., six miles from here.<lb /><lb />Miss Hedges left home in company<lb />with a lady teacher to take her home.<lb />bey met Jackson while on the way.<lb />When Miss Hodges was<lb />home she passed Jackson again.<lb />Seeing she was alone the rascal took<lb />advantage of the opportunity and her<lb />position, ran up behind her bugg aud<lb />jumped up to her back, catzhing her<lb />by the vhroat and choking © her<lb />itensely, so, much 20 she was hardly<lb />able to talk afterwards. The young<lb />lady faught heroically and succeeded<lb />in knocking Jackson off the buggy.<lb />She then put whip to her horse and<lb />fled away tor home.<lb /><lb />Tie rascal was apprehended and<lb /><lb />lodged in jail, When questioned he<lb />adinitted the crime.<lb />This is JackvonTs third attempt io<lb />accomplish his hellisa work, ie has<lb />a boyish face with sma!l claim to intel.<lb />ligence. Showers<lb />occurred the first days of the week,<lb />followed by warm, dry, sunvy weather,<lb />which will not prove injurious if<lb />proper seasons occu. in early August.<lb />Crops are beginning to need rair, and<lb /><lb />in a few counties which received least<lb /><lb />rainfall last week are beginning to<lb />suffer. In general crop conditions are<lb /><lb />excellent; in some counties «speciaily<lb /><lb />tine. ~Thouga cotton is shedding some,<lb />i<lb />the damage so far is insignificant. The<lb /><lb />early corn crop is made. ~I'he general<lb />prospects for the State at present could<lb />hardly be bettered.<lb /><lb />EASTERN DISTRICT,<lb /><lb />Rains continued over Monday and<lb />Taesday (27th), after which dry, warm<lb />weather set in, with abundant sunshine,<lb />which continued tothe end of the<lb />week. The weather was favorable,<lb />but it is now getting too dry over many<lb />counties. Crops are doing well; mostly<lb />laid by and work done. Some early<lb />corn is being damaged by dry weather.<lb />but most of the ciop is made, with<lb />some fodder nearly ready for stripping.<lb />Late corn needs rain but still looks<lb />green and promising. Insome sections<lb />farmers say prospects are for the finest<lb />corn crop in three or four years.
