Because it<lb />predominates in that respect and be-<lb />cause it can be used for the protec-<lb />tion of iron and steel, and the en-<lb />richment of brickwork and stone-<lb />work of various designs, it is used<lb />extensively in these days of lofty<lb />buildings and artistic and elaborate<lb />ornamentation.<lb /><lb />Taking into consideration only<lb />architectural terra cotta, the prad-<lb />uct is immense, and, as the process<lb />of production is interesting, it may<lb />be worth while to describe some<lb />parts of ~tae industry that has in-<lb />creased se rapidly. Decorative and<lb />artistic qualities are employeil in<lb />the productions, and good results<lb />cannot be obtained without eareful |<lb />attention, technical skill and ex-<lb />haustive experiments. The composi-<lb />tion of clay and the effect af heat<lb />must be -Enown, and the cembina-<lb />tions of «certain colors must ~be de-<lb />termined before the, plastie mass<lb />can be molded and fired.
