The<lb />story while it surpasses belief, is<lb />repeated in every quarter and the<lb />people of the surrounding couv-<lb />try are wrought up to the higLest<lb />pitvh of religious excitement over<lb />it? The strange story follows:<lb /><lb />One night last week several<lb />negro turpentine workers were<lb />playing cards near the ferry.<lb />One negro had $7.00 at the be-<lb />ginning of the game, but lost<lb />steadily until at last he had left<lb />only $1.00. Holding this bigh<lb />above his head, he swore that if<lb />he lost it, he would curse God.<lb /><lb />In the next deal he lost it, and in|<lb /><lb />consequence, he executed his<lb />oath.<lb /><lb />No sooner had he done so,<lb />than he was heard to scream, and<lb />hig companions on looking at<lb />him, saw that sulphurous flames<lb />poured from his mouth, ears,<lb />eyes and nose. ,<lb /><lb />Terrible frightened, they at<lb />first ran away, butsoon returned<lb />and endeavored to relieve his<lb />sufferings. Water poured upon<lb />him was without awail. A blan-<lb />ket was brought forward and<lb />they attempted to wrap him with<lb />it, in order to extinguish the<lb />flames, but the would be rescuers<lb />were kept away by some mysteri-<lb />ous power, About four feet was<lb />as near as an approach could be<lb />made to the unfortunate victim,<lb /><lb />Then, thinging that the log on<lb />which he sat was in some way<lb />responsible for his predicament<lb />they began to saw it off near the<lb />point on which he sat. The first<lb />incision of the saw caused blood<lb />to drip from it and to fall with<lb />the sawdust, to the ground. An<lb />ax was next sentfor, but its use<lb />revealed the fact that in every<lb />part the log was filled with veins<lb />of blood. :<lb /><lb />Then they threw a noose of a<lb />rops over the negroTs body and<lb />tried to pull him away from his<lb />positon.<lb /><lb />According to reports they<lb />might as well have attempted to<lb />drawa star from the sky. The<lb />_ Fope in consequence of its con-<lb />tact with the body of the victim,<lb />-Yendered as naught the great<lb /><lb />him. 2 | :<lb /><lb />There he sits, rumor says, con-<lb />suming, yet with no probability<lb />of ever being utterly consamed"<lb />dying always, yet not dvad"<lb />living in and breathing the fires<lb />of hell, crying tor water, which<lb />poured upon him caases him {0<lb /><lb />p ATLY REFLECTOR |strength of those who would save<lb /><lb />=|gcream as mortal was never heard<lb /><lb />to shriek before.<lb /><lb />It is said that people flock to<lb />seo him, but appallea by the<lb />sight, tarn and flee, some with a<lb />ierior that is piteous to witness.<lb /><lb />The chiJdren of Adrian are<lb />terrorized by the rumor and<lb />speak of it in whispers of horror.<lb />Nigut is no more welcomed,<lb />and sleep withthem has only the<lb />meaning of a Platonian dream.<lb /><lb />(Signed.) CHETHAM.<lb /><lb />NL CS<lb />Get ~1o ether.<lb /><lb />womans cant<lb /><lb />The colored Kepublican office<lb />seekers are quite disgruntled at<lb />the small success thit is attend-<lb />ing their efforts and it 18 said<lb />that some of them are making<lb />some dreadful threats for the<lb />future. In the light of past ex-<lb />perience, there is no deperdence<lb />to be placed in such threats.<lb />The negro indulges in such anticg<lb />between elections, but when vot-<lb />ing time rolls aroud he walks up<lb />like a tin soldier and kisses the<lb />hand that smote bim and azain<lb />puts in his ballot tor the same<lb />old gang that has used him for<lb />these many years as a stepping:<lb />stone to office. Truly, oEphraim<lb />is joined to his idol, and, usually,<lb />it is time wastea to do otherwise<lb />than follow the injunction, olet<lb />him aione. While the colored<lb />voters are almost solidly arrayed<lb />against the best interests of their<lb />best friends, as well as against<lb />their own interests, in their slav-<lb />ish devotion to political tricksters,<lb />they are powerless to co much<lb />harm if the white voters are true<lb />to their race and to their State.<lb /><lb />Unfortunately, in recent years,<lb />enough white men have strayed<lb />away from the Jandmarks of their<lb />fathers to place State affairs un-<lb />der the control of incompetent<lb />acalaways. Some were lured<lb />away by the temptations of the<lb />fleshpots ot the Radical camp<lb />and some haye been actuated by<lb />a spirit of resentment for imagi-<lb />nary wrongs and some have felt,<lb />perhaps, that certain reforms<lb />cou'd be secured earher through<lb />another " political organization.<lb />Whatever the cause for this drift-<lb />ing, it must be apparent, from<lb />the disaster it has brought, that<lb />it is necessary for the white peo-<lb />ple who have the welfare of the<lb />State at heart to get together<lb />and rescue North Carolina from<lb />her present perilous situation.<lb /><lb />The histery of the State is an<lb />open book from which all men<lb />may read. Ifthey read it cor-<lb />rect y, they will find this i1mpor-<lb />tant fact, in letters that cannot be<lb />erased and in language that caa-<lb />not be misinterpreted: Demo-<lb />cracy has always given good<lb />government; Republicanism has<lb />always given bad goyernment.<lb />Which kind of government do<lb />North Oarolinians prefer?
