They sometimes print<lb />5,000 dodgers, and although it<lb />costs them more money than tLe<lb />same amount of space in a daily<lb />newspaper, they imagine it to be<lb />cheaper. In the first place they<lb />do not consider how many copies<lb />of a paper there are that go into<lb />the homes of the 1 eople they de-<lb />sire to reach. The dodgers are<lb />pripied and placed in the bands<lb />of small boys whose only desire<lb />is to get rid of them and draw<lb />their pay for distributing them.<lb />They will pass down the street<lb />and poke one under the arm of<lb />each person they meet, no matter<lb />if that individual already bas had<lb />a half dozen of them. The boys<lb />pass on and the man throws the<lb />dodger down and that is the last<lb />of it. The streets are s00n cover:<lb />ed with them and they are tram-<lb />pled into the dirt unread.<lb /><lb />A newsaaper 1s taken into the<lb />home. Every member of the<lb />family reads it and then it is<lb />loaved all over the neighborhood<lb />to ceople who are either too poor<lb />or too stingy to take a paper.<lb /><lb />~One subseriber said recently that<lb />he did wish something could be<lb />done to prevent people irom bor-<lb />rowing his newspaper. He suid<lb />his Sunday paper was not at<lb />home long enough for him to<lb />gvarcely look it over. Befo.@<lb />night tour differeat families had<lb />borrowed his paper and each<lb />member of each family had read<lb />ij through. He said of course he<lb />could not refuse to loan them the<lb />paper, but he did wish people<lb />would subscribe and pay for theit<lb />own paper. If this cue is a<lb />sample, it will be seen that in-<lb />stead of 5,000 readers for tnis<lb />paper we have 25,000. In what<lb />cheaper way can an advertiser<lb />raach so many people? Many<lb />wide awake business men have<lb />trken advantage of this method,<lb />aid they have found that it has<lb />piid them many times the<lb />anount of the cost of adyertise-<lb />mont. What you<lb />note about him most is that he does<lb />nothing. Day after day | we we<lb />walked over the country anv: found<lb />him standing or sitting abc at.idle.<lb />This used to be a surprise, but we<lb />were always told that it was a holi-<lb />day. Ji always is a holiday ona<lb />saint's dey, and there are many<lb />saintsT days in the Greek calendar.<lb />How the land gets cultivated at all<lb />is a marvel, but it does somehow,<lb /><lb />There are no inelosures, or very<lb />few. You are walking along inno-<lb />cently and suddenly find yourself<lb />striding over vine furrows. At<lb />first you think you are trespass-<lb />ing and try to go around, but<lb />a little experience makes you bold,<lb />and you find that you are doing<lb />quite the right thing. You may be<lb />attacked hy a dog, but that is not<lb />because you are off the path, but<lb />because you are a human being.<lb /><lb />The Greek dog is a marvelous<lb />beast. We have vivid recollections<lb />of him. His one principle is that<lb />man is his natural foe, and he<lb />takes every opportunity of putting<lb />his principle into practice. He gen-<lb />erally appears from nowhere and<lb />makes for you. You must get rid<lb />of him quickly or he will call to his<lb />aid brethren seven times worse than<lb />himself and get rid of you. You<lb />generally begin by shying stones.<lb />These are always at hand in Greece,<lb />Providence, I suppose, nevey' gives<lb />an evil without a corresponding au-<lb />tidote. This may drive him off if<lb />he is alone and not very bold. If it<lb />doesnTt, you must adopt more vigor-<lb />ous measares. DonTt shoot him, be-<lb />-cause there is a superstition that he<lb /><lb />| has an owner, and that owner will<lb /><lb />probably turn up at the critical mo-<lb />ment and shoot you. But you may<lb />stab him if you happen to be carry-<lb />ing a large enough knife and have<lb /><lb />| the skill to use it, or you may brain<lb />.) him with your walking stick if it<lb />If these fail, |<lb /><lb />be heavy enough.<lb />there is said to be one remedy left.<lb />You may sit still, and he, too, will<lb />sit still and look at you. This is<lb />said to be infallible, but we never<lb />had the courage totry it. It is no<lb />doubt an extremely comfortable<lb />feeling to be seated in the center of<lb />a circle of canine admirers, but it<lb />would be apt to pall after a time.<lb />and Greece is not so thickly popu-<lb />lated that you can depend on a res-<lb />cue arriving within an hour, ora<lb />day either.<lb /><lb />~If you pass through the perils of<lb />the way and reach the village in<lb />safety. you will, of course, gu to<lb />tho inn, cafe, what you will. Here<lb />are all the men of the place, talk-<lb />ing, laughing, driving away cares<lb />which never come to them. The<lb />prevailing costume is the long, gray<lb />cloak of the shepherd, the most pic-<lb />turesque garment in Greece. These<lb />men will stare at you periaps a lit-<lb />tle, but they will make you wel- j<lb />come. They will all talk to you in |<lb />their own tongue, and you will an-<lb />ewer in yours, It does not matter a<lb />bit that neither understands the<lb />other. Both parties will be equally<lb />pleased. We remember once mect-<lb />ing an old shepherd on the slopes of<lb />Hymettus. He stopped and entered<lb />into a long conversation. What it<lb />was about we do not know, but he<lb />seemed well pleased, and after<lb />about 20 minutes we wished him<lb />good night in the only words of his<lb />language that we knew. You will<lb />probably meet the village priest<lb />too. Heis only a peasant like the<lb />rest, but he is recognized as a su-<lb />perior being on Sundays... Then if<lb />you are thirsty you driuk krasi, the<lb />wine of the country, very mild and<lb />very like sealing wax, At first you<lb />will hate it, but after you have got<lb />accustomed to it you will prefer it<lb />to champagne, orT you may drink<lb />~~mastichTT if you merely want to<lb />be sociable. If you are wise, you<lb />will cat. bread and honey, real Hy-<lb />mettus honey, which the. whole<lb />world cannot beat. And then you<lb />will get up and go home, feeling<lb />that there is no oneT you have met<lb />like the Greek peasant."Pall Mall.<lb />Gazette. ih<lb /><lb />Sir Benjamin Richardson, the dis-<lb /><lb />tinguished English physician and |.<lb /><lb />medical writer, says that seven out<lb />of every ten sound and reasonable<lb />people ought to live to be 110 years<lb />old, and would do so if they ~~took<lb />care_of themselves".<lb />iii<lb />Persons should be cautious about<lb />trying new and unknown vegetables,<lb />Even many known are at times un-<lb />~wholesome, Potatoes, when not<lb /><lb />atck-,<lb />a<lb /><lb />a,<lb /><lb />severe bowel opmplaint snd<lb /><lb />Lh anteater ee<lb /><lb />soe Peal,<lb /><lb />enti AR te eh ame Si<lb /><lb />DIRECTORY.<lb /><lb />CHURCUES,<lb /><lb />v<lb /><lb />BAPTIST"Services every Sunday,<lb />moring and evening, Prayer meeting<lb />Thursday evening.
