L. JOYNER.<lb /><lb />Flattering and overestimated tobac:<lb />co crop reports, its enormity and atove<lb />a hundred condition, not based alto-<lb />gether on facts and circulated in many<lb />instances without a strict regard for<lb />truth, told for the purpose of increasing<lb />and inducing business and booming<lb />oneTs particular town or locality, has in<lb />many instances during recent yeurs<lb />acted as a boomerang to the reporters<lb />and their section,<lb /><lb />The writer has coatended all along<lb />that exaggerated reports of the number<lb />of pounds of tobacco sold on any par-<lb />ticular market burt the patrons ot that<lb />market more then the boom and boast<lb />did good in drawing capital and in-<lb />creasing trade. With this in view,<lb />uhen, we have especially insisted that<lb />the eastern markets make proper and<lb />accurate reports of the business done,<lb />so as not to form an exaggerated idea<lb />of our eastern crop.<lb /><lb />During the last few years, the eyes<lb />of the tobacco trade have been turned<lb />to the markets of eastern North Caro-<lb />lina, From them the trade gets its<lb />finest wreppers, most silky cutrers und<lb />smoothest strips. Then how important<lb />it is that the trade should be properly<lb />informed as to what they can get from<lb />this, by far the most important bright<lb />tohacco section in the South. Over<lb />estimated crop reports of the acreage<lb />and its condition anyone can easily see<lb />has the tendency to seriously effect the<lb />price of the crop. A reporter cannot<lb />interview two or three farmers who<lb />have above acreage crops and then<lb />publish to the trade that there is the<lb />finest crop in eastern Carolina that ever<lb />grew out of the soil. Such as this is<lb />not only untrue but really and seriously<lb />damaging io the farmers and to the<lb />trade.<lb /><lb />Realizing that there was a consider-<lb />reduction in the acreage in the east the<lb />writer determined to get as near ap<lb />accurate report of the acreage and its<lb />ccndition as poss:ble, so I wrote to<lb />several. representive farmers in. Pitt,<lb />Greene, Ler.oir, and Edgecombe coun-<lb />ties and asked them to write me, as<lb />iiearly as they could judge, just what<lb />the acreage was this year as compared<lb />with last, also the condition ot the crop<lb />as compared with the same period one<lb />yeur ages ~<lb /><lb />A few have answered and their re-<lb />porta-are published herewith.
