Those who favor locay<lb /><lb />taxation under<lb />couid never be induc ed to vote for it at<lb /><lb />other circumstances<lb />present, The public schools for the<lb />next two yeurs are destined to bea<lb />failure. ~They will continue so as long<lb />as they are in politivs and are used to<lb />further the interests of a few politicians,<lb />This is the verdict of the people in<lb />these parta in reference to them just<lb /><lb />now,<lb /><lb />Social Galety at the Pen<lb />Some time ago the convicts at the<lb />penitentiary participated at a swell<lb />german in the administration building,<lb />but on the Fourth they went that one<lb />better, as social functions ihese day<lb />give place everywhere to athletics<lb />- They hada match game of baseball<lb />between the two crack teams of the<lb />State prison. The fine catching and<lb />pitching were features of the game<lb />The stick work was not so good as<lb />usual, Some brilliant catches were<lb />made and the score was kept down<lb />close enough to muke the cvent a very<lb />exciting one.<lb />After this came a very elaborate<lb /><lb />dinner, comptimentary to the day, by'<lb /><lb />Superintendent Smith. The weather has also<lb />~been very dry, but beneficial local<lb />showers occurred in. portions, of the<lb />following counties: Eastern district,<lb />Brunswick, Chowan, Hyde, Pasquo-<lb />tank, Bertie,Jones, Craven and Tyrreil;<lb />central district, Wake,Juhnston, Anson,<lb />Chatham, Moore, Person, Durham,<lb />Franklin and Warren; western district,<lb />Mitchell, Transylvania, Henderson,<lb />Crbarrus, McDowell, Gaston. In<lb />these counties the week has generally<lb />been very favorable. In general,<lb />however, the heat and drought have<lb />considerably injured crops, at least on<lb />high and sandy lands; crops are every~<lb />where need~ng rain. Cotton is doing<lb />well, however; it is greenand growing<lb />rapidly; stand very good; is blooming<lb />quite general.y; not yet suffering for<lb />rain. There are more<lb />Doctors of Philosophy in the<lb />faculty than in any other college<lb />faculty in the State. It is not<lb />surprising that the most modern<lb />methods cf education are followed<lb />at Trinity College. During the<lb />past yeir, one hundred and one<lb />thousand dollars were sdded.<lb />to the endowment. Trinity Park<lb />has been greatly improved at the<lb />expenditure of thousands; of dol-<lb />lars. A new Chair has been<lb />added to ths School of English,<lb />thus making ~I'rinity the leading<lb />college of the State for the study<lb />of Edglish language and Litera-<lb />ture. Trinity 1s the only male<lb />literary college in the State that<lb />is located in a city, and it there-<lb />fore puts its students in touch<lb />with wider influences aud more<lb />leading questions than any other<lb />college in the State. It is an<lb />education in itself to associate<lb />with a wide circle of men. The<lb />advantage of attending a college<lb />in a city cannot be overestimated<lb />Tie students are brought in<lb />touch with the best cultural life<lb />and the mos~ prominent men of<lb />the day. The reputation of the<lb />students of Trinity for Christian<lb />mavliness is known far and near,<lb />andis the pride of the city of<lb />Durham in which the college is<lb />located. The Trustees at their<lb />recent meeting opened all the<lb />classes of the college to women.<lb />This means much for the higher<lb />education of our women. When the tide<lb />went down he was found standing<lb />upright with his legs down in the<lb />mud. The bottom of the river<lb />at that point at high tide is<lb />swampy, and when McBride<lb />jumped into the water he sank<lb />into the mud.
