Seismic disturbance<lb />always occur at nearly the same<lb />time at widely different points of<lb />the earth. We of the United<lb />States are apparently least subject<lb />to them. When, therefore, 40<lb />earthquake occurs here W° may<lb />be quite sure of hearing in the<lb />next few days of a far more<lb />gsrious one in some of the great<lb />seismic centres of the world--the<lb />Grecian archipelago, South<lb />America, India, oF Maiaysia.<lb />While, therefore, no one could<lb />predict jast where the bad news<lb />would come from, scientists have<lb />tor the past few weeks been<lb />expecting to bear ol gerious<lb />earthquakes somewhere.<lb /><lb />This will go on record a8 aD<lb />exrthquake year"not that there<lb />has been so far any serious loss<lb />of lifefrom these aisturbancer,<lb />but they have been exceptionally<lb />frequent aud widely distributed.<lb />They have been severe, too, but,,<lb />fortunately, free from lass of life<lb />more by accident, it would seemT<lb />than from any special cause, for<lb />there is no way of providing<lb />against loss and damage of these<lb />convulsions of tne earth.<lb /><lb />So far in the last few weeks<lb />they haye occurred in Canada,<lb />Mexico, Italy, Japan, in the<lb /><lb />central part of the United States, |<lb /><lb />and, last ot all, in India, and it 1s<lb />believed, generally throughout<lb />the East Indias. Our own earth-<lb />quake, extending along the live<lb />of the Alleghanies, with its cen-<lb />tral pointin Southwestern Vir-<lb />giuia, was a more serious one<lb />than any we have had since the<lb />shaking up and down at Charles-<lb />ton. There was a great deal of<lb />d smage done, but fortunately the<lb />worst shocks were in 4s wild,<lb />mountainous country, sparsely<lb />settled, where there were no laige<lb />towns to suffer damage.<lb /><lb />~News from Lodia is still meagre,<lb />and it may prove, when we get<lb />_ the retarns from the far away<lb />districts, tnat the disaster has<lb /><lb />@, and accompanied by some loge.<lb />life. At Calcutta walls were<lb /><lb />by those phenomena<lb />them. Against suca disturbances<lb />however, we are reasonably safe,<lb />for the United Srates seidom<lb />snffers more than a slight seismic<lb />shake, and New Orleans and the<lb />~country around scarcely feel it<lb />New Orleans Times-Democrat.<lb /><lb />een RET TEM<lb /><lb />Value of the Toad Frog"Dest:oys<lb />Great Numbers of Insects.<lb /><lb />ee aid<lb /><lb />Saturday morning a party of<lb />gentlemen were siliing around<lb />trying to keep cool, when the<lb />subject of toads came Up. Mr. Kirkland has<lb />given much atteation to toads,<lb />as much as the Agricuitaral<lb />Department bestowed on crows:<lb />Aad he. too, has published a<lb />book. ~He states that 77 per cont.<lb />of the toadTs food is insects. He also instances<lb />an experiment where in three<lb />hoursT time a toad had consumed<lb /><lb />between. thirty and thirty. five<lb />full-grown celery worms. It occurred in Barclay<lb />street, in the subcellar of a crock-<lb />ery and glass warehouse, amid the<lb />gtraw used to pack the glassware.<lb />It sent forth a dense, stifling emoke<lb />I<lb />will relate it in the rather charac-<lb />teristic way in which it was told<lb />me by a fireman in one of the com-<lb />panies that were summoned to sub-<lb />dueit. The story gives an idea of<lb />what the firemen in the business<lb />part of a big city may have to face<lb />at any time.<lb /><lb />oThe station came in one night at!<lb />11:30. We rolled, and found the fire |<lb />in Barclay street Mm a crockery<lb />warehouse. Burning straw, jute<lb />exceisior and all that sort of stuff<lb />in the subcellar. omoke: I never<lb />saw such smoke since ITve been an<lb />theTbusiness. We went through tthe<lb />building and found the fire hadn't<lb />got above the cellar. We tried to<lb />get the line dow the cellar stairs,<lb />~but it was no use; no one could live<lb />or that stairway for a minute. The<lb />chief then divided us up, senteout a<lb />second (a second alarm), and wo<lb />sailed in to:drown it out; -27 en-<lb />~gine got: the rear; 7 engine the stair-<lb />oway, to keep it from coming up,<lb />-and our company, 29, got the front.<lb />We pried open the iron cellar doors<lb />con the pavement, only to find that<lb />the elevator «ised to carry freight<lb />to the bottom had been 2a up to<lb />the top. Here were four iwches of<lb />Azeorgia pine to cut through! And,<lb />ophew, such work in such s#aoke |<lb /><lb />~~Well, we got through this, opened<lb />it up and"eut itcame!
