It was not their first<lb />intention to report any amendment on<lb />thig subject, but they became satisfied<lb />that if they did not there was danger<lb />that the Pettigrew anti-trust aumend-<lb />ment, which was recently tabled by a<lb />little parliamentary juggling, might be<lb />brought to a direct vote and be adopted.<lb />Then they got their heads together<lb />and concocted the sham that will be<lb />just about as injurious to the trusts as<lb />the Sherman anti-irust law has been<lb />and they actually expect the voters ot<lb />the country to accept their work as an<lb />earnest and real attempt to. curb the<lb />power of trusts, instead of seeing it tor<lb />what it really is; an attempt to bam~<lb />boozle the vo tors who donTt know any<lb />better than to look to Republicans<lb />for legislation adverse to trusts.<lb />Senator Turpre gave the Republican<lb />tariff bill a raking fore and att in a<lb />speech in favor of the amendment sup"<lb />ported by the minority of the Finance<lb />Cummittee, to tax inheritances over<lb />$5,000, 2 per cent for the next five<lb />yen's. He told the Republicans that<lb />they had made the measure prohibitory<lb />and that besiaes, no bill had ever been<lb />presented that made 80 large and<lb />unprovoked a spoliation of the worldTs<lb />commerce.
