Seyeral things had<lb />not gone to suit him. The news-<lb />, p2pers printed the report of Con<lb />* aul General Fitzhugh Lee, on the<lb />- Buiz investigation, before 16 was<lb />received by the State Depart-<lb />ment, and noboby could discover<lb /><lb />the Jeak. But the principal<lb />cause cf: Mr.~ McKinleyTs bad<lb />humor was the verbal report<lb />made by his friend and personal<lb />representative, - Mr. Calhoun, who<lb />found out too muck of what Mr.<lb />McKinley did not want to know,<lb />and not enough to corroborate<lb />what what he thought he already<lb />knew. In short, Mr. Calhoun<lb />~. reported things as he found them,<lb />regardless of whether theyT ~pleas-<lb />~ed or displeased anybody.<lb />Meanwhile the Cuban question<lb />is ready to boil over in Congress.<lb />Many Repablicans in the House<lb />who baye been keeping quiet in<lb />opposition to the wishes of their<lb />constitvents, in order to give Mr.<lb />McKinloy a chance to do some-<lb />thing, are. growing restive and<lb />- cannot be held in much longer.<lb /><lb />~Notwithstanding the opposi-<lb />tion of Senators Jones, of Ark.,<lb />and Vest, of Mo. both of whom<lb />denounced it severely, six Doam-<lb />ocrats voted for the amendiaent<lb />offered to the tanff bill by Sena-<lb />tor Bacon, cf Ga. putling a 20<lb />per caut ad yalorum duty on raw<lb />cotton. The Republicans all<lb />voted forthe amendment and it<lb />is now a part ofihe bill. The six<lb />Dewocrats who voied for the<lb />ameudment were Bacon and Ciay<lb />of Ga., Tillman and McLaarin, of<lb />S. O., McEnery, of La. and Raw-<lb />lins, of Utah.
