We<lb />show the best.<lb /><lb />THE PROBABLE DEUREASE.<lb /><lb />Of the Tobacco Acreage of Eastern<lb />North Carolina.<lb /><lb />BY 0..L. JOYNER.<lb />"<lb /><lb />Since the first of last October many<lb />speculations haye been rite as to what<lb />the probable decrease in the tobacco<lb />acreage in Pitt, Greene and Lenoir<lb />counties would bé this year. During<lb />the marketing of the crop in the fall<lb />and winter months the low price at which<lb />it sold, and the frequent expressions that<lb />planters were heard to use in reference<lb />to the coming crop ~wereT sufficient to<lb />almost warrant the conclusion that a<lb />disastrous reduction would be made in<lb />the 97 tobacco crop. Conservative<lb />farmers, men who are slow and guarded<lb />in their decisions, openly avowel their<lb />intention of cartailing their tobacco<lb />acreage very considerably, with the ad-<lb />ditiona! assertion that unless prices were<lb />better for the next crop, that it would<lb />be their last. i venture the assertion<lb />that out of every hendred farmers who<lb />grew tobacco last year 95 of them were<lb />dissztistiei at the result of their prices,<lb />and with such a condition of affairs it is<lb />no wonder, that farmers were trequent in<lb />their expressions of disconteut and un-<lb />certain as to their future course with to-<lb />bacco as their main dependence. Then<lb />comes the marketing of the cotton crop<lb />which if possible onthe whole sold<lb />more disastrously low thau the tobacco<lb />crop, and but for this 9ud the fact that<lb />nearly every farmer nad gone to addi-<lb />tional expense to prepare for tobacco ]<lb />believe that Eastern North Caroli-<lb />na including all the territory east of she<lb />W. & W. Railroad would have been<lb />decréased at least 354 per cent. But<lb />when farmers realize that if they should<lb />cut off their tobacco and throw the<lb />acreage into cotton, it meant certain<lb />destruction in the fall, for cotton at<lb />four-or even five cents a pound means<lb />simply two cents a pounds worse off<lb />than no cotton at all, and that I believe<lb />(though 1 am not up on cotton tacts) is<lb />about the-basis on which the T97 cotton<lb />crop is now being figured. Taus a more<lb />and more frightful condition contronted<lb />the farmers. ~True their tobacco crop<lb />had in many instances tailed even to pay<lb />expenses, but when they turned to cot-<lb />ton that crop offered no consolation and<lb />while prices of tobacco last year were<lb />discouraging it was the first crop that<lb />had net proved remunerative. and the<lb /><lb />T96 crop was the poorest that had ever:<lb /><lb />been grown in the eas; and hence the<lb />question that presented itselt for discus-<lb />sion was whether they should act upon<lb />their first impulse and cut their tobacco<lb />oft and put it into cotton or take the<lb />more conservative course and cultivate<lb />better. .\iver waiting util the crop is all<lb />in the grouhd, and getting the most reli-<lb />able information from all sections, I atm<lb />led to the conclusion that the tobacco<lb />acreage in the three counties above<lb />named which embrace the greater part<lb />0. the tobacco belt, will not be decreased<lb />to exceed 16% per cent and probably<lb />not over 124 -per cent.<lb /><lb />If the farme? in the east make a<lb />00d erop this year and prices are good<lb /><lb />&<lb />probably plant as much next year as<lb />rormer'y. With the increased fertili«<lb />zation of soil, and the determination of<lb />farmers to make their tobacco better<lb />the probability is there will be jast as<lb /><lb />this year than last.<lb /><lb />Base Bail.<lb /><lb />St. Louis, May 20-"-The Browns<lb />played poorly today.
