In view of the hos-<lb />tility which these mystic brother-<lb />hoods were regarded by ~the<lb />country at large some fifty or<lb />seventy-five years ago the figures<lb />presented by the last fraternal<lb />census are allthe more surprising.<lb /><lb />In the various secret organiza-<lb />tions. of the United States and<lb />Canada, according to the latest<lb />available returns, there are 5,071,-<lb />414 members. ~The largest of<lb />these organizations is the.Odd<lb />Fellows, with 954,144 members<lb />enrolled. Next ecmes the Ma-<lb />sonic fraternity with 935, 4@ and<lb />the Kuights of Pythias with<lb />464,539. In view of the phenom-<lb />enal growth of American Odd-<lb />fellowship, which now heaus the<lb />list of secret organizations in this<lb />country, itis gratifying to know<lb />that the brotherhood originated<lb />in Baltimore, Md., only seventy-<lb />eight years ago.
