It gets<lb />close to the people, it knows its<lb />patrons, it works for their inter-<lb />est,and in turn they appreciate<lb />whatTis done for them, and the<lb />truth of this is shown in .the fact<lb />that when the great combination<lb />of roads have tried to aown the<lb />Seaboard, the people have gone<lb />to its rescue, aud give it an in<lb />crease of business, more than<lb />enough to overbalauce all the<lb />combination could take from it ;<lb />and the people continue to pat-<lb />rovize the road. Tue<lb />Air Line refuses to enter combi-<lb />pations for holding up freight<lb />and passenger rates. It believes<lb />in making its rates directly with<lb />the poopie giving them all the ad-<lb />yautagesitcan. The roads that<lb /><lb />: go inte: combinations must pay<lb />high selaries for com binatiouw<lb />officials, these salaries must be<lb />~paid bv charging higher rates of<lb /><lb />~ freight, and thereby the people<lb /><lb />have to pay it. Tourgee to be consul<lb />at Bordeaux, France, suggests &<lb />lot of history. Tourges was one<lb />of the carpet-baggers who swoop-<lb />ed down upon North Carolina just<lb />after the war. He became a<lb />judge ct the Superior Court and<lb />made a good one. After the<lb />expiration of his term he settled<lb />in Raleigh to practice law, but did<lb />not do much good at it, and<lb />nearly twenty years ago returned<lb />to the North and wrote oA Fool's<lb />Errand, which brought him fame|<lb />aid fortune. This book Cealt<lb />with the reconstruction periodT of<lb />Nerth Carolina, with the Ku<lb />Klux, etc., and contained enough<lb />falsehood to put the State in a<lb />thoroughly bad tight before<lb />strangers and yet enough truth to<lb />forbid that North Carolinians<lb />should enter a blanket denial.<lb />The work was skillfully done, the<lb />narrative an absorbingly interest-<lb />ing one, and the wLole marked<lb />by literary finish, The money<lb />which Tourgee made on this<lb />book he sunk in a literary paper<lb />which he established with it bat,<lb />as author and lecturer, he is said<lb />to have since retrieved his for-<lb />tunes. He is indeed a very<lb />smart fellow, and certain news~<lb />paper articles of 8 political<lb />character which he wrote white<lb />he lived in this State were re-<lb />niarkable for their britliancy and<lb />the biting quality of their sar<lb />casrh. He was cordially hated<lb />by the Democrats during his<lb />residence here, especially duringT<lb />recoustruction, when he was<lb />conspicuous as a Repablican<lb />politician. One of the most<lb />frequently teiterated charges<lb />agaiust him was tkat he was 4<lb />perdoned criminal from the Obio<lb />penitentiary, and it is never te be<lb />forgotten how Gen. D. H. Hill,<lb />with that weck gravity which so<lb />distinguished him, said in the<lb />Southern Home, with a fine show<lb />of indignation, that he had no<lb />boubt that this story was a libel,<lb />but that Tourgee, instead of<lb />being » pardoned criminal, had<lb />served out his term fully and<lb />honestly."Charlotte Observer.<lb /><lb />" oe a ""<lb /><lb />A Sanctum Se:mo2,<lb /><lb />=<lb /><lb />te ee ees<lb /><lb />Too many people pay more<lb />attention to the affairs of others<lb />than to their own.
