The extension<lb />is below Vicksburg, Miss-, but on<lb />the right or west side of the river,<lb />and is mainly due to a break<lb />9,000 feet in #idth, in the levee at<lb />Biggs. Tye outflow of water at<lb />this poise has totally submerged<lb />tour pdrishes (counties) of Louis-<lb />jana and partially overflowed five<lb />others, while a break at La<lb />Fourche crossing in the southern<lb /><lb />sulted inthe submergence of an<lb />additional area of nearly 300<lb />square miles in La Fourche and<lb />Terres Bonne parishes. In this<lb />newly submerged region there<lb />was in 1890 a total population of<lb />82,356, in the pfoportion of four<lb /><lb />region contained at the last<lb />census 7,747 farms, with a total<lb /><lb />which 420,000 were improved. Of<lb />this last mentioned area 213,000<lb />acres, or over one-half, were last<lb />year devoted to -cottor, over<lb />91,000 acres to corn, 6,060 acres<lb />to sugar cane, 2,000 acres to hay<lb />and an inconsidorable acieage to<lb />other crops. ~The total value of<lb />these farms, including fences and<lb />buildings, but exclusive of their<lb />movable equipment was in 1890<lb />close upon $11,000,000 and the<lb />valne of the implements and ma-<lb />chifery upon them was over<lb />$600,000.: On January 1, of this<lb />year, they contained live stock to<lb />the value of $1,500,000, and so<lb />lately as the first of March they<lb />were estimated to have still on<lb />hand about $800,000 worth of the<lb />crop of last season. The total<lb />value of the farms submerged by<lb />the breaks in the levees that have<lb />occurred since the 10th inst.. with<lb />their farm implements, live stock<lb />and crops on hand, is therefore<lb />close upoh $14,000,000. This<lb />region produced last year nearly<lb />100,000 bales of cotton, over<lb />9,000,000 pounds of sugar, over<lb />1,300,000 bushels of corn, besides<lb />hay, potatoes, cats and other<lb />minor products, the entire pro-<lb /><lb />.o18 date is over 20,000 square<lb /><lb />Census 46,520 farms, with @ toval.<lb />area of 4,904,466 ares, nearly one-<lb />half of which was improved, and<lb /><lb />the approximate value wf the<lb />aggricultural property of the<lb />submerged region. The total production<lb /><lb />Arccent bulletin of the N. C.<lb />Experiment Station which is now<lb />being distributed, is No. 133, en-<lb />titled osome new forage, fiber<lb />and other useful plants.� This<lb />bulletin describes a variety of<lb />new plants which have been<lb />tested and their value is reported.<lb />Among the more important of<lb />the kinds that are promising and<lb />worthy of more general use, are<lb />the cowpea» of the oUnknown�<lb />aud oRea Ripper� varieties, bagy,<lb />a new Japanese legumine recent-<lb />ly imported, allied to Japan<lb />clover, the Canada field pea, and<lb />yetch. Among the plants that<lb />haye recently been advertised<lb />that do not promise well and are<lb />not recommended, are the beggar<lb />weed, so much planted in Florida,<lb />the horse baan; saccaline; the<lb />flat pea and canaigre. The latter<lb />plant is grown in the arid climates<lb />of the middle lower section of the<lb />United States, Arizona and ad-<lb />joining States, for use for tannic<lb />avid. So far it hay not been found<lb />of value in this State. Promising<lb />fiber plauts are ramie and jute,<lb />the former especially, and some of<lb />the roots are being distributed<lb />for co-operative testing 10 the<lb />eastern section of the State, where<lb />it promises to be of considerable<lb />va'ue in rich lowlands aad in rice<lb />growing districia.
