The Bank of Greenville,<lb />hereto see that the Stateisnot| Place that my father filled ;<lb /><lb />forgotten in the way of patronage<lb />obut it is within the memory of<lb />many of us when women were<lb />very scarce there. We gave it<lb />out that we wanted them for<lb />school teachers and the like, and<lb />encouraged them to come out<lb />there, but the truth was the men<lb />wanted them for wives. I remem-<lb />ber once we sent a young man to<lb />Massachueetts, where he was<lb />wel! acquainted, with orders to<lb />collect 100 young women and to<lb />escort them back to Oregon. We<lb />guaranteed every one of them one<lb />yearTs employment. The active<lb />man in the matter was 4 fine<lb />looking young map,who afterwara<lb />served two terms in Congress<lb />from our State. He spent two<lb />months in selecting the party and<lb />started West with them. On the<lb />trip out he courted one of the<lb />school teachers on his own hook<lb />and actually got her convent to a<lb />marriage on the arrival of the.<lb />train at Portland. The boys<lb />howlsd considerably about it,<lb />claiming that he had treated<lb />them unfairly in having first<lb />choice, but there was a lot of fine,<lb />marriageable material left. Some<lb />of those women are today the<lb />'eading ladies of thé society of<lb />the State. More than three-<lb />fourths ot the hundred were mar-<lb />ried inside of three years and<lb />many in less than one year. A<lb />few of the lot, however, are<lb />teaching school there today, not<lb />that they did not have any offers,<lb />but becauce they would not<lb />accept any of the fellows who<lb />offered themselves. Now that<lb />Senator Mitchell has about gziven<lb />up his contest to return as Sena-<lb />tor, he will likely be succeeded<lb />by a gentleman who married one<lb />of the party of school teachers to<lb />which I refer. He will bring his<lb />wife here with him, and your<lb />Washington folks can see for<lb />themselves the kind of ladies we<lb />had out there for school teachers.<lb />Tnoy canTt,be surpassed, eyen if<lb />equalled, anywhere.
