Herald, of the 1st,<lb />from Mr. A. B. Sanford, a cotton<lb />mill man of that city, who was in<lb />Charlotte recently, and whose<lb />letter opens with this paragraph :<lb /><lb />While the Northern manufac-<lb />turer has been arguing and spec-<lb />ulating as to what his Southern<lb />competitor would be able to ac-<lb />complish, aud while many people<lb />felt no fear of wny danger ~that<lb />the South would be able to com-<lb />vete, wuch to my astonishment,<lb />Tfind from-a personal inspection<lb />during the past ten days among<lb />some of the mills in the South,<lb />that they have fuily soived the<lb />problem of cotton manufacturing,<lb />und are now making and have<lb />been makingdor sometime fabrics<lb />and yarns equal to our New Eng-<lb />~aid mills, and for less cost, selling<lb />them to our customers, supp!ant-<lb />ing our productions, to an alarm<lb />ing extent, and from figure<lb />obtained of cost of sama, I find<lb />that they are enabled in their<lb />Snely-equipped and well-organiz<lb />ed mills, by good and cheaper<lb />labor, to make a profit, even on<lb />preseut depressed market prices,<lb />while our own New England mills<lb />cannot manufacture without a<lb />loss.<lb /><lb />Mr. Sanford adds that this is a<lb />hard faci to face, but that it isa<lb />Condition aud nota theory, and<lb />he goes on to say that the stories<lb />told in the North and Hast about<lb />the inefiliciency of Southern mill<lb />operatives won't do. He found<lb />the operatives in the mill districts<lb />oi the South, over which he<lb />trayeled extenrively, ozood native<lb />American whites, who overy<lb />quickly adapt themselves to the<lb />work, are eager to learn, happy<lb />aud contented. The help he<lb />fiads is abundant, reliable, capable<lb />und 33} per cent. cheaper than at<lb />Fall River and in New England<lb />Fuel is cheaper here than there,<lb />_ the raw material is cheaper,and «1,<lb />taxation itia said: . |<lb />~In North Carolina, South Car-<lb />Olina and Georgia taxes are very<lb />low. One mill which I visited,<lb />having $250,000 invested, pays<lb />_ tax of only $240 per annum.<lb />: Such & millin Fall River will pay<lb />: $5,000 tax. There are within 100 miles<lb />of Charlotte, N. C., 200 mills,<lb />containing 1,525,000 spindles and<lb />44,000 looms. It is estimated that<lb />100,000 pieces ot goods that are<lb />made by the Southern mills per<lb />week now find their way to<lb />Northerr markets, supplanting an<lb />equal amount of goods formerly<lb />made at Fall River, New Bedford,<lb />Lowell and other New England<lb />centres.<lb /><lb />Mr. Santord concludes :<lb /><lb />It is yery clear we cannot stand<lb />in Massachusetts any more ad-<lb />verse legislation against our in-<lb />dustries, for the Southern mil's<lb />can mak3 dividends, while their<lb />Northern competitors are selling<lb />their goods at cost. And in proof<lb />of this, many of the Southern<lb />corporations have been paying<lb />steady and continuous dividends<lb />during the hard times of the past<lb />tweive months.<lb /><lb />We find no joy inthe fact that<lb />the Massachusetts mills are mak-<lb />ing no money. but it is sgreeable<lb />to reaa the testimony of a Massa.<lb />chusetts mill man to the fact that<lb />the South has manifold advan-<lb />tages oyer it for manufacturing<lb />cotton and is working them to the<lb />limit."Charlotte Observer.<lb /><lb />heer Eee<lb />The Recsnt Election.<lb />Washington, April 10."Ex-Vice<lb />President Stevenson arrived here<lb />last night, and for the ,next three<lb />days will devote himself to wind-<lb /><lb />attend to previously.<lb /><lb />of anything in New England, both |<lb /><lb />ing up private businesss affairs<lb />which he has had no time to<lb />Mr. Stey-<lb />enson is now living at his Illinois<lb />home and says he ivtends settling<lb /><lb />To Have the Right Kina of Pluck.<lb /><lb />- Troe enit and pluck does not sit |<lb />down and repine wheu disaster<lb /><lb />comes, but goes to work bravely<lb />and manfally to recover the loes.<lb />The business men who suffered<lb />by the fire last week seem to be<lb />made of the right: kind of stuff<lb /><lb />and are now hopefully looking te<lb />the future.
