Our people<lb />gend away for all kinds of articies<lb />that may be purchased from bome<lb />merchauts.<lb /><lb />Malions of dollars are sent away<lb />for articles that can aud should<lb />be manufactured within our own<lb />borders.<lb /><lb />It is these drains, one and all,<lb />that so coustantly abserb what<lb />our peoples make, and th» State's<lb />vast resources are being sent<lb />away to eurich other people aud<lb />other sections.<lb /><lb />There is a need of eaving, of<lb />stopping these various drains<lb />upon the energy and labor of the<lb />people of North Carolina; if there<lb />is to be any accumulation of<lb />wealth in this State. That was sev-<lb />eral years ago. After leaving<lb />school he went to work as a bar-<lb />tender in his fatherTs saloon,<lb />where there was always 4 plenti-<lb />fal supply of cigarettes.<lb /><lb />His father noticed George's<lb /><lb />| growing fondness for cigarettes,<lb /><lb />and in order to break him of the<lb />habit, discontinued their sale in<lb />his saloon. The son when un-<lb />abie to go out for himself, would<lb />press every chance visitor into<lb />his service to secure them.<lb /><lb />Eventually the father grew<lb />more vigorous in his restrictions,<lb />but even this failed. Then a<lb />physician warned the young man<lb />that to continue the yice would<lb />be to court death. This, like the<lb />admonitions of his father, passed<lb />unheeded in the desire to inhale<lb />poisonous rolls of paper and to-<lb />bacco, and a short time ago the<lb />habit took such a hold upon him<lb /><lb />teen packs a day.<lb />It was noticed a few days ago<lb /><lb />the boyTs nervous manner aod<lb />inability to attead to his daily<lb />affairs, watched him closely, and<lb />then called in a physician. ~The<lb />doctor, after looking at the boy,<lb />shook his head and made the<lb />same observation that had been<lb />made many times before; that the<lb />young man wouli die unless<lb />jome means were adopted to<lb />break him of the vice.<lb /><lb />The climax came vesterday<lb />morning. Deprived of bis cigar-<lb />ettes, young Merkt broke into a<lb />frenzy, and to preserye the lives<lb />of those in his home, 1t was nec-<lb />essary to callthe police. When<lb />a patrolman came to the rescue<lb /><lb />lance was called.<lb /><lb />bundled aboard, raving.<lb />way to the hospital ha made re-<lb />peated efforts to break away, and<lb /><lb />the three was unable to restrain<lb /><lb />In the insane pavilion Merkt<lb /><lb />joining cots to give him a single<lb />cigarette or he would die. As<lb />the day progressed he become<lb /><lb />length his very violence left him<lb />weak aod almost unable to artic-<lb />ulate.
