R,<lb />Purnell are now in the lead.<lb /><lb />The papers continue to give alarming<lb />accounts of the flocd along the Missis"<lb />sippi river. At many places the levees<lb />have broken submerging miles and<lb />miles of the low country and doing great<lb />damage. The water has climbed above<lb />the danger line at New Orleans and<lb />much of that city is threatened with<lb />snundation. That city is several feet<lb />lower than the river and if the water<lb />breaks the levee there will be immense<lb />damage. All along the river people arg<lb />fleeing to places of safety.<lb /><lb />It Was a Success,<lb /><lb />The Past and Present Century Par-<lb />ty given in Germania Hall, Tuesday<lb />night, by the Ladies Aid Society of the<lb />Methodist church, was a sucess in<lb />every way. A good crowd was present<lb />and everything was sold out by 10<lb />oTclock.<lb /><lb />The hall was divided by screens into<lb />two sectious. The portion representing<lb />the past was dimly lighted with candleg<lb />and was under the management of<lb />Misses Lizzie Blow and Florence Star-<lb />key. Miss Blow was dressed in a past<lb />century costume and never looked more<lb />charming.<lb /><lb />The present century portion of the<lb />hall was beautifully decorated and bril-<lb />liantly illuminated.
