John E. Wuite, Ccrresponding<lb />Secretary of the Baptist State Conven-<lb />vention, preached two excellent sermons<lb />in the Baptist church Sunday, and<lb />Greerville people, regardless of denom-<lb />ination, were charmed withhim. He is<lb />an eloquent speaker and his sermons t<lb />such a character as to draw the closest<lb />attention all through. His morning dis.<lb />course was of a missionary nature"the<lb />subject being oTh Open DoorT"and<lb />he showed Christians the many oppoi-<lb />tunities presented and the privilege they<lb />have for working to spread the Gospel<lb />of Christ. At the close of this sermon<lb />he asked for a cullection for the cause cf<lb />missions and something over $66 was<lb />contributed.<lb /><lb />The sermon at night was about the<lb />love of Christ, showing that to bee<lb />perfect Savior He left Heaven and came<lb />to earth and touched every phase of<lb />humanity. He felt our poverty, endured<lb />our weakness, suffered our temptations,<lb />participated in our surrows, oTouched<lb />the Bier� for all that He might be the<lb />S.vior of ail. A few. days<lb />prior to her death she swore out<lb />a warrant charging bastardy at<lb />the door of W. D. Ward, a young<lb />man of the commuiity. Some<lb />time afterward Mr. Carey, the<lb />girlTs father, met Ward at a sale<lb />and assaulted him with a cane,<lb />and later drew a pistol on him.<lb />Carey was indicted for assault,<lb />and the case was heard in the<lb />Criminal Court.<lb />had finished the examinatien |*<lb />of witnesses, Attorney-General<lb />Howard arose and stated to the<lb />jury that while he believed the<lb />defendant technically guilty, hele:<lb />recognizee the right of manhood<lb />to vindicate virtue, and asked<lb />that a verdict be rendered<lb />acquitting Mr. Cary.
