JOYNER.<lb /><lb />and notwithstanding the fact (which<lb /><lb />that while land planted in tobacco con-<lb />{inuously fora number of years im-<lb />proves the land for other crops such as<lb />cotttor. and corn, it seems to impover-<lb />ixh it for contiaued planting in tobacco.<lb />For instance last year-I noticed a farm-<lb />er, anda very good and successful one<lb />too, planted kis tobacco on land that<lb />had been cultivated in tobacco for the<lb />past four years. He put at tlie rate ot<lb /><lb />from 600 tu 800 pounds of tobacco fer-<lb />tilizer to the acre and with all his past<lb />experience and knowledge of tobacco<lb />culture when he sold his crop in the<lb />fall he only received about $40 to $50<lb />per acre for it, while just across the<lb />road on the very same sind of soil,<lb /><lb />which was not in any better state of<lb />cultivation, his neighbor planted a crop<lb /><lb />of tobacco on land that had never be-<lb />fore been planted in tobacco. He fertil<lb /><lb />ized as did his neighbor who had_ been.<lb />planting tobacco and cultivated partially<lb />under his instructions, but when selling<lb />time came he parted company with his<lb /><lb />crop $200 per acre.<lb /><lb />Now this difference to my mind<lb />meant something and my conclusion<lb />was that there was some very stroug<lb />plant lite producing element in the vir-<lb />gin condition of land which grew to-<lb /><lb />.<lb />For the past tew years I have ob-<lb />{served closely the different modes of<lb />| tobacco culture in the eastern counties<lb /><lb />friend and instruccor, receiving for his |.<lb /><lb />WHICHARD ITEMS.<lb /><lb />i a<lb /><lb />Wuicuarp, March 22, 1897.<lb />S. I was in-<lb />clined to belieye that if woods mould<lb />or yirgin soil were hauled on land and<lb />composted with other fertilizing ingre-<lb />dients it would enswer this purpose and<lb />keep the land in good condition for<lb />continued planting in tobacco, still I<lb />knew there were some very good farmers<lb />who did this annually withont the<lb />desired results,then I suggested planting<lb />cow peas on tobacco land, but was<lb />informed by those who had tried them<lb />that peas gave tobacco a tendency to<lb />disease, so not being much of a chemist<lb />myself I wrote to Dr. Battle, Director<lb />ot the Experiment Station giving him a<lb />full description of land used continually<lb />for tobacco and asked him to g-ve me<lb />the views of the station. That county has had no,<lb />feaco law for 32 years and this<lb />outrageous. law has enraged the<lb />land owners, among whom is<lb />Senator ClarkTs mother.<lb /><lb />A supplementary bill was in-<lb />troduced to prevent the other bill<lb />from taking effect tor two years,<lb />bat Clark secured the defeat of<lb />the supplemealary bill.
