It1s 168 miles from the<lb />border and has a population be-<lb /><lb />otween 75,000-and 100,000. It is<lb /><lb />said to be perhaps the most<lb />American city in Mexico, that is<lb /><lb />-¢more ot our people are numbered<lb /><lb />among its inhabitants thanin any<lb />other city the same size. This 1s<lb />no doubt due to its nearness to<lb />the border and its accessibility to<lb />Americans. Yet the visitor is im-<lb />pressed. with the fact that the cus-<lb /><lb />~ toms of the city are aecidedly un.<lb /><lb />, Amerivan, and Mexican life and<lb />customs are ssen here in ali<lb /><lb />, phases.<lb /><lb />As stated previously we reach-<lb />ed MonTerey abobt midnight on<lb />Saturday night. Em barking from<lb />the train aud passing through<lb />the station eut to the street, for<lb /><lb />fa while things sounded like we<lb />had dropped down among the<lb />tower builders of Babel. It war<lb />oall oDatehTT to us"or rather Spans<lb />ish"and never atime out of the<lb />hubbub could we catch such a<lb />gentence'as oHiverybody goes to<lb />othe King House, mght on Main<lb />street or oHotel Macon, best<lb />house in the city. Relief from<lb />such actaiter as this came quickly |<lb />@sthe approach of a gentleman<lb />~fpeaking a pretty. good specimen<lb />of oUnited otates readily caught<lb />the eye ani car of our party. He<lb />was conn-cted with one of the<lb />best hotels in the city, had learned<lb />of the cowing of our party and<lb />came down to cupinre us. And<lb />he wasnTt long doing this.<lb /><lb />In order to keep us togethes<lb />and prevent a possibility of any<lb />Ohe getting lost, our wiioie party<lb />~poarded the same street car for<lb />~the trip up to the hotel, two wiles<lb />distant.
