Perry has been on trial here<lb />since last Friday for rape committed in<lb />February, 1896, upon Annie Smith, a<lb />white girl about twelve or fourteen<lb />yeas ot age. He escaped at the time<lb />he committed the crime and was found<lb />and arrested in Wilmington several<lb />months later. He was brought back to<lb />Washington Inst June and lodged in<lb />jail, where he has been since awaiting<lb /><lb />jn<lb />trial.<lb /><lb />He was ably represented by Hon<lb />Chas. 1. Warren. The State<lb />represent. d by solicitor Leary, assisted<lb />by Messrs. John H. Small and Stephen<lb />CG. Bragew.<lb /><lb />The verdict was not a surprise, for<lb />almost everybody believed kim guilty.<lb />The jury was out only torty minutes.<lb /><lb />A mortion for a new trial was over.-<lb /><lb />ruled. He plead guilty to the<lb />charge. Before. his honor passed<lb />sentence be was placed on the<lb />stand in his own behali, and<lb />proved to be a witness from away<lb />back and a nimrod indeed. The<lb />bears he had captured, the deer<lb />he had slayed and the number~<lb />less encounters he had had with<lb />the wild beast of the forest would<lb />lay the record of the celebrated<lb />Daniel Boon in the shade. He<lb />tried to impress upon his honor<lb />the necessity of a pistol in the<lb />daring adventures of such a life:<lb />His council, Mr. Small, came to<lb />his aid and said he was the last<lb />of that mighty race that had<lb />made old North Carolina what<lb />she was, and made it possible for<lb />the present generation to rest in<lb />security, free from the ravenous<lb />wild beasts of the forest, and in<lb />elcquent tones tried to impress<lb />upon the court that for the sake<lb />of the memories of the past and<lb />sweet charity's sake to let- nim<lb />go.
