Good fortune<lb />struck our way again, however, and<lb />this time finds us spinning away for<lb />Galveston to attend another meeung of<lb />the Association, the trip bringing with<lb />it an opportunity of visiting the extreme<lb />southern and gulf regions of our country<lb />Having slrendy traversed the western<lb />middle, northern and eastern States,<lb />nothing could be more desired than this<lb />present trip through our own Southland,<lb />especially the portions of it we had<lb /><lb />never visited befove.<lb /><lb />Nothing can add more to the pleasure<lb />4 of a trip than good traveling ccm-<lb />pavions, hence our route lay by Hen-<lb />- derson to join Thad. Manning, of the<lb />Gold Leaf, then on through the famous<lb />county of Chatham where H. A. Lon-<lb />_ don, of the Pittsboro Record, was added<lb />to the party, thence on via the Seaboard<lb />Air Line to Atlanta wher? J. p. Cald-<lb />well, o* the Charlotte Observer, joined<lb /><lb />us. All exceedingly clever and con-|<lb /><lb />genial companions, as we know by past<lb />experience, and nothing but a pleazant<lb />| journey could be expected in such an<lb />~agreeable party.<lb />A TRAIN RACE.<lb /><lb />The first incident of interess along<lb />the route was a very exciting race be-<lb />tween the Seaboard and Southern<lb />trains from Raleigh to Cary. Between<lb />these points the tracks run parallel and<lb />races between the trains are frequent<lb />when they leave about the same time.<lb />Oa this occasion the Seaboard pulled<lb />out of the depot just ahead, but had<lb />scarcely gone a mile when the South-<lb />evn came puffing alcngeide. Secing<lb /><lb />his competitor creeping up on Lim, the<lb />Seaboard engineer turew open his throt-<lb />tle and let drive, slipping away from<lb />the other train with apparent ease, and<lb />getting a few hundred yards ahead<lb />The engineer of the Southern followed:<lb />suit and turned on more steam and for<lb />afew miles the tilt was lively, both<lb />rains almost flying. through space. Sud-<lb />denty it was noticed that the rear train<lb />began rapidly lessening the distance<lb />berween them, a few moments later<lb />was alongside again and shot on like an<lb />atrow to the front. This at first seemed<lb /><lb />o,:anaccountable to the Seaboard passen-| °<lb /><lb />gers, thie train having distanced the<lb />other at the outset, but this was soon<lb />explained from the fact that the rapid<lb />pun had put the train ahead of schedu.e<lb />~time which compelled it to slow up<lb /><lb />_. before reaching the point where the two<lb />tracks crossed. near the Cary depot,<lb /><lb />"LOOKED LIKE CAROLINA.<lb />|. Going oat of North Carolina, through<lb />South Carolina aud into Georgia as far<lb /><lb />After leavirg the latter place this<lb />morning, being then in a section new to<lb />us we began taking observation. The<lb />undulating country and scrubby oak<lb />forests prevalent in this portion of<lb />Georgia impressed us witu the striking<lb />similarity it bore to the central aeetions<lb />of North Carolina. On nearer and into<lb />Alabama the country grows more hilly,<lb />approaching almost to mountainous.<lb />Through Georgia and Alabama we<lb />expected to find farming preparations<lb />for the next crop much furtser advanced<lb />at this time of year than at home, but<lb />the contrary is true. So far we have<lb />seen no section that has made even as<lb />much preparations as the farmers of<lb />Pitt county. It may be different further<lb /><lb />south, |<lb />BOOMS THAT BUSTED.<lb /><lb />This side ot Atlanta and as far as<lb />New Orlean our trip is over the South-<lb />Jern railway, via Anniston, Birmingham<lb />and Meridian. One could almost tell<lb />Anniston was reached without<lb />told, from being able to s*e not<lb />It is remembered<lb /><lb />when<lb />being<lb />much save smoke.<lb />that the descovery of iron here a few<lb />years since created much excitement<lb />as well as a big boom, and many iron<lb />furnace were put in operation Like<lb />mest booms, especially when land<lb />suarks get in them, this one busted and<lb />jt came pretty near busting Anniston<lb />with it.<lb /><lb />At Birmingham there was a stop of<lb />three hours which gave us a chance to<lb />sce much of the city. Mr. London has<lb />two kinsmen here, Messrs. Alex and<lb /><lb />mington, N. (., and are yery prominent<lb />lawyers. These gentlemen took our<lb />party in hand and showed us the city,<lb />Birmingham has about 45,000 popula-<lb />tion, and the site of the city was all in<lb /><lb />:| the woods twenty-five years ago, there<lb /><lb />not being even so much as a railroad<lb />station here. At the time the iron<lb />industry opened up the boomers goi<lb />hold of this town also. ~There were<lb />430 licensed real estate agents who in<lb />one year paid the city $43,000 taxes:<lb />~Their operations proved a hindrance<lb />rather than a help, and for a while<lb />progress was checked. ~The city has<lb />outgrown this now is ona substantial<lb />footing. Thritt and enterprise huve<lb />pushed to the front once more and<lb />there are indications of much progress.<lb />It is an all arcund pretty place with<lb />many fine business buildings and at"<lb />tractive residences.<lb />THIS WAS CHEAP.<lb /><lb />By way of a side note there were a<lb />few other things that struck us at<lb />Burmingham. ~The First thing we<lb />noticed in passing fruit stands was that<lb />tice bananas sold from d to 10 cents<lb />per dozen. oUmph! if that was only<lb />home, we Apples<lb />about the same price. Another re-<lb />markable thing was a hotel bill the<lb />party paid, We ail got dinner"a<lb />very good one"and had grips, over-<lb /><lb />thought. were<lb /><lb />coats, &e., checked while we took in<lb />theeity. When the bill was settled it<lb />struck the crowd with surprise"only<lb />25 cents » head.<lb />paid 75 cents for a dinner not near so<lb />good, with bath and care of baggage<lb />comming extra, Here it also only<lb />cost 5 cents tomde seven miles over<lb />the city.
